Tho Salem Journal says : A knot of eager listeners was Inst night gathered about James Itenlorshotf,i pioneer of eoutlieni Orcgonian, listening to hi Hamilton of a feu- points of early his tory and pioneer romance. A Capital Journal man vas among (he listener, and I his is the story of a Salcrn tragedy as told by one of tho actors: In Win, when Orouun wan in ilir. judicial district, with only three itv'lgos I Some tall bran -h- aim uneij sucruis, tins lienll of tho southern district, James Ilonilershott, (who now lives in Union, and is visiting in Salem, temporarily), started for 1'orl Jand, whore the penitentiary was then located. His starting point was Doug las County, and the entire distance was to he made on horseback, as railroads in thn.so days were not even thought of as winding over the precipitous mount ains of southern Oregon. The Sheriii" had with him three prisoners, who had oeen sentenced by -nidge Deady (now ui mriiuiui; to a term ol ten years each, tho extreme penalty of tho law, Jor ingliway robbery. The men were John Jackson, known as "Emigrant," "JHtcKSKin JWII," anil a man named Hamilton. The first named had passed his early years in Savannah, Mitsouri, and there received hi.s education. Tho others were convicted of robbing a man nam d Combs, on (irav's Creek, Joco phine County, of .$910. They had "held him up" while taking a ride with him in a wagon, claiming to be prospectors from California. They arrived in Salem cn route to I'ortland and tho prisoners wore placed tinder guard in tho carpenter shop of J. O'Donald (who still resides here). Under tonio pretext Jackson was per mitted to leave tins house. JIo was no sooner out of tho door than he made an attempt to escape and was shot, tho ball passng through his spine, and deatii followed immediately. The precise snot where 'this tracedv occurred was near the site of the pres ent Court J louse, close to the old Jlon ncit House, which burned down a few years ago, cremating three Chinamen in its burning ruins. Tho body of Jackson was buried on the bank of tho river, and two sets of doctors wanted it. Ono party hired a man to watch the grave. Ho. wont to dinner, and in tho interval the other M. J)'s. exhumed it and carried oil' tho remains. "That ends my story," said Mr. Hen- i dershott, his eyes twinkling, "and if : any of you arc are up to snufl'. you will ' know where tho skeleton is to-dav. I ! saw it a short tiniu ago, and can assure you it is in good shape. It is mounted and, ically, is a perfect mauakin." The reporter hero ventured to learn from ono of the actors in thu drama where tho skeleton was, but tho old ex Shcrifr lecogni.ed him and would say no more. (Iri'Kiili National Ciimrtl.
