as told by one of tho actors:

southern district, James Ilonilershott,
(who now lives in Union, and is visiting
in Salem, temporarily), started for 1'orl
Jand, whore the penitentiary was then
located. His starting point was Doug
las County, and the entire distance was
to he made on horseback, as railroads
in thn.so days were not even thought of
as winding over the precipitous mount
ains of southern Oregon. The Sheriii"
had with him three prisoners, who had
oeen sentenced by -nidge Deady (now
ui mriiuiui; to a term ol ten years
each, tho extreme penalty of tho law,
Jor ingliway robbery. The men were
John Jackson, known as "Emigrant,"
"JHtcKSKin JWII," anil a man named
Hamilton. The first named had passed
his early years in Savannah, Mitsouri,
and there received hi.s education. Tho
others were convicted of robbing a man
nam d Combs, on (irav's Creek, Joco

him up" while taking a ride with him
in a wagon, claiming to be prospectors
from California.
They arrived in Salem cn route to
I'ortland and tho prisoners wore placed

J. O'Donald (who still resides here).
Under tonio pretext Jackson was per
mitted to leave tins house. JIo was no
sooner out of tho door than he made
an attempt to escape and was shot, tho

deatii followed immediately.
The precise snot where 'this tracedv
occurred was near the site of the pres

years ago, cremating three Chinamen
in its burning ruins.
Tho body of Jackson was buried on
the bank of tho river, and two sets of
doctors wanted it. Ono party hired a
man to watch the grave. Ho. wont to

M. J)'s. exhumed it and carried oil' tho
remains.
"That ends my story," said Mr. Hen- i

know where tho skeleton is to-dav. I !
saw it a short tiniu ago, and can assure
you it is in good shape. It is mounted
and, ically, is a perfect mauakin."
The reporter hero ventured to learn
from ono of the actors in thu drama
where tho skeleton was, but tho old ex

The Campbell Country Press lias been long and favorably known to the trade as the best, most simple, most durable, and most profitable cylinder pres for the general
use of a country ofliec. The above cut shows our new machine just out, which is our former press rcmoddlcd, simplified, and improved with special reference to easy running
by hand power. In the new machine we have retained all the peculiar advantages possessed by the old, having concentrated and added to them until our press represents the
nearest approach in perfection yet attained. In simplifying, we have been enabled to reduce the cost, making the cheapest, as well as tho best press of this character in the
market, and although especially designed for a hand-power press, we apply tight and looe pulleys and belt slipper, at the nominal additional cost of 15.00.
