IGNOMINIOUS FAILURE. ITUy Colleco Men Are Not Much or a Suo cess Out In Dakota. Why don't college men do well out in Dakota? Because tho country's too big for 'era; they can't fill up tho room out there. I'll tell you ono reason why the natives don't tako to 'em. Wo built n railroad out thero. mo and Mill Slearoy we're a progressive crowd out in Da kbta ono of tho finest roads you jver saw. It was ojjlv a hundred miles long, and a hundred miles ain't much in Da kota, but it was a railroad from top to bottom. We'd made a pilo o' money, mo and Bill, and wo about owned Zero Valley, and when tho country began to get settled up wo said wo'd givo 'em a railroad, and wo did. That railroad cost a sight o' money, but it was worth it. We didn't stop at nothing to mako it first-class. "Tho Zero Valloy & Iceborough railroad" wo called it. Cars nil inlaid and veneered, yellow plush cushions on tho seats, every thing tip top. I wanted to have silver mount ings on all tho seats, but Bill wouldn't have that. He's a thinker, Bill is, and ho thought that when train robbers stopped tho train thoy'd tear tho cars to pieces, so wo let it go at nickel. Well, I wanted a regular Eastern road, with brakemen to call out the star tions. They don't generally do that in tho West, you know. I sent East for brakemen, and I ordered collego grad uates, for I was going to havo every thing tho best. 1 had 'em sent out there all trained up ready for tho first trip. They was as lino a looking set of boys as you'd want to see. When T got 'em into their bluo uniforms, with their gold buttons and silver badges, thoy did look encouraging. I was pleased, now I tell you, and I said to Bill tho morning wo was going to pull out on tho first trip, "Bill this is a great coun try; wo beat tho world on every thing wo tackle." Bill wasn't so cheorful. llo ain't a feather-brained man, you know, and he don't often let his feelings run away with him. 1 never know him to warm up over any thing but Injuns. Ho did used to get a littlo worked up over them critters in tho early days. Well, he said he hoped ovory thing would turn out all right, but ho wasn't going to yell beforo he got out of tho woods. Wo had a crowd on tho first trip. Every body was there. Every thing worked well when wo started. Buttho thing I wanted most was to hear the brakeman call out tho station. That was what I was waiting for. I had whito posts put up just whoro I wanted him to open tho door and shout out tho station. I began to get nervous when wo got near Beo-at-riss. "Beatrice," somo people call it, I don't object to that if people like it, but wo pronounco it Beo at-riss out thore, torhymowith matress, you know. Bee-at-riss. Wo named it after ShorilT Bowio's littlo girl. As I said, 1 began to get norvous whon wo got near Bee-at-riss. I was afraid ho'd forget about tho whito post, and I didn't want to havo tho wholo thing spoiled. But ho remembered it, and my heart just jumped when ho throw tho door open suddenly. Then that infernal collego dudo screamed out: "Bay-a-tree-chay! Bay-a-tree-chay! this sta tion is Bay-a-treo-ehay!" I wont into tho telegraph oflico and telegraphed down to Friezedalo for the lynching party. And that's why you seo so many collego men's graves out in Dakota, young man. Ar. Y. Tribune. SAMPLE'S ASSURANCE. How a "Nervy" Drummer l'nplcnlsl-cd His Stuck oT Cash. Numerous instances aro on record of tho striking self-possession, or in tho vernacular, "nerve," possessed by Sam Sample. Coucealed under this pseu donym is a traveling man who has friends from ono coast to tho other. Beforo ho had mado his success ns a commercial travoler ho was staying in Minneapolis for no reason whatover except that ho happoncd to bo thoro and couldn't get away. IIo was a man of good appearance, howevor, and go ing to a hotel ho registered in an im pressive manner. In a short timo ho was well acquainted with tho landlord, and when ho spoko of a draft that func tionary very promptly undertook tho responsibility of cashing it. "Just mako out your draft," said tho lnndlord. "Hero, this pieco of noto paper will do." Sam sat down and in a short timo re marked: "Hero's a draft for fifty now, if you will obligo mo ah, thanks!" "But," said tho landlord, "you hnven't mado tho draft on any body. Thoro's no drawor." "Oh, that's all right," said Sam; "You know moro peoplo than I do; just fill it in to suit yourself. I loft it blank on purpose" It is but justico to Sam to say that ho is ontiroly squaro with tho landlord now and thnt ho could cash a draft for llvo hundred thoro to-day if ho desired.
