ONK OKKflON KIUTOK. A l'en Picture ii f Mm, Drawn Willi Truth nml Accuracy, Editou Ouuno.v Scout: The Eastern Oregon Republican, a newspaper published nt Union, Union county, Oregon, nnd edited by G. M. Irwin, ex-minister of tho gospel nnd ex-prohibitionist, takes i "little 2.G paper of Oregon" to task for saying of tlio recent election that "It is a great victory for monopolists and the corporations, railroad ki'ngd and- tho iron lords," and makca this assertion an excuse for belittling President Cleveland and the democratic party nnd assuming that Harrison and tho republican party are without stain or stench. Mr. Irwin is a republican. He is entitled to his opinions and has perfect freedom in expressing thum, and better opportunities than many persons less fortunate. In forming liiri conclusions upon the character of President Cleveland and his party and in his assumptions in reference to Harrison and the rcpub1 lien n party, ho is presumed to have some facts upon which ho bases such conclusions and assumptions, and it certainly would bo more dignified am more in accordance with the great 13ook of precepts to give such' facts and let tho readers of his paper judge whether or not his conclusions are correct. His personal tirade against Presi dent Cleveland shows an utter disre gard of the gnftt and sacred injunct ion, "Judgo not lest yo bo judged," nnd n want of that editorial dignity which every journalist should possess. It is a general rule, applicable to near ly all tho affairs of life, that where bare conclusions aro stated without facts, tho facts aro either wanting or aro against tho conclusions. Has Mr. Irwin tho facts which would warrant him in saying that any and all attacks made against Mr. Har rison and tho republican party aro dirty, cowardly and criminal, and that President Cleveland simply had tho courage of a ruffian and is hardly en titled to bo called our president? The dirt and tilth winch iinds acceptation nt tho hands of some journalists, of wluyh Mr. Irwin is no c.coption0 does not provo anything except that such journalist has either low and mean in clinations or is dovoid of sufficient sense to distinguish between dignity nnd dopravity. It seems that tho brilliant editor of tho Republican makes a good hand whon it comes to prescribing a clean straight path for others, but on account of some hidden prerogative ho is undor no obligation to follow tho proeopts ho preaches. D Ho scores Blandcrers of Harrison and the republican party and in tho same breath Bays moro vile, mean things about Cleveland and tho democratic party than all tho "littlo 2x(5" jmpurs of Oregon combined say about Harri son and the republicans Harrison is held up as a model of honesty and ability and omincnlly fit to bo called "our president," while President Clove lano is relegated to obscurity in a cqn toniptuous manner. This undignified and ungrateful manner of dealing with men and things stamps the editor of tho Republican as a man so filled "with bigotry and projudice, and so antago nized by anything which his lofty(V) wisdom rejects, that ho viows every thing opposed to his understanding as low, dirty and vicious. As a specimen of his fidelity to facts nnd truth, ho says a "littlo 2x0 paper of Oregon says," etc. Tho fact is, as every one knows, no such paper is printed nnywhoro in Oregon, and if there is no moro truth in tho other assertions hu makes than in this one, tho whole may bo summed up as a batch of falsehoods. It is to bo regretted that in this day and ago of tho world, party representa tives and assumed loaders tieoomo so earnest in their efforts to promote par ty success that thoy sometimes resort to bold misrepresentation and down right lying to gain points. While this couibu may succeed for a time, it is certain to meet with condemnation in the end and tho persons relying theieupon branded as a curse to hu man society. If journalism is to succeod in its mission it must direct its efforts to in 'dividuala as intelligent men and not as a depraved, morbid sot of mongrels. In politics journalism should occupy tho same high ground which it is pre sumed to occpy in other departments of thought, but it seems to he tho con trolling idea of many umbitious jour nalists that in order to fit themselves for distinction and receive recognition us political factors they must ransack their vocabulary for epithets of vilill cation and minejiresontatiou, and when found to hurl thorn at their ad vmmry for tho tolo purpose of arousing pri'idio Mini not patriotism in the wliuU of Hu-Ir mdvn, A Americans wc have a conimoninterost, nnd love f the institutions founded by our fore fathers whether wo understand them perfectly or not. Since the foundation of our govern mcnt there' ha been two great divis ions of sentimeut among the people as to what measures and policies are best in subserving our interests as a people This division of sentiment exists to day as it existed one hundred years ago. The lepubliean party represents one side of this division and tho dem ocratic parly the oilier. 1 nero is an honest difference of opinion in refer once to tho fundamental principles of government. Tho republican party lias had control of the legislative and executive departments and so has the democratic party. Their acts and deeds and policies while having such control arc matters of history and pub lie record. It then becomes tho duty of the journalist in dealing with political questions and political parties to give the people the history and records in detail, or otherwise, and let tho intelli gence of tho people decide which par ty is most worthy of support. Jt an advocalo before a jury in li court of justice expects to win his cause by vil ifiing and abusing his opponents, he either assumes tho jury to be a set of knaves, or fools. It is so in journal ism, and if matters of fact and of his tory bo presented to the people, they will receive attention and duo consid oration whether published by a "little 2x0" Jackinapes or by an ex-minister Of tho gospel.
