of tlio recent election that "It is a
great victory for monopolists and the
corporations, railroad ki'ngd and- tho
iron lords," and makca this assertion
an excuse for belittling President
Cleveland and the democratic party
nnd assuming that Harrison and tho
republican party are without stain or
stench. Mr. Irwin is a republican.
He is entitled to his opinions and has
perfect freedom in expressing thum,
and better opportunities than many
persons less fortunate.
In forming liiri conclusions upon the
character of President Cleveland and
his party and in his assumptions in
reference to Harrison and the rcpub1
lien n party, ho is presumed to have
some facts upon which ho bases such
conclusions and assumptions, and it
certainly would bo more dignified am
more in accordance with the great
13ook of precepts to give such' facts
and let tho readers of his paper judge
whether or not his conclusions are
correct.
His personal tirade against Presi
dent Cleveland shows an utter disre
gard of the gnftt and sacred injunct
ion, "Judgo not lest yo bo judged,"
nnd n want of that editorial dignity
which every journalist should possess.
It is a general rule, applicable to near
ly all tho affairs of life, that where
bare conclusions aro stated without
facts, tho facts aro either wanting or
aro against tho conclusions.
Has Mr. Irwin tho facts which
would warrant him in saying that any
and all attacks made against Mr. Har
rison and tho republican party aro
dirty, cowardly and criminal, and that
President Cleveland simply had tho
courage of a ruffian and is hardly en
titled to bo called our president? The

journalist has either low and mean in

As a specimen of his fidelity to facts
nnd truth, ho says a "littlo 2x0 paper
of Oregon says," etc. Tho fact is, as
every one knows, no such paper is
printed nnywhoro in Oregon, and if
there is no moro truth in tho other
assertions hu makes than in this one,
tho whole may bo summed up as a
batch of falsehoods.
It is to bo regretted that in this day
and ago of tho world, party representa
tives and assumed loaders tieoomo so
earnest in their efforts to promote par
ty success that thoy sometimes resort
to bold misrepresentation and down
right lying to gain points. While this
couibu may succeed for a time, it is
certain to meet with condemnation in
the end and tho persons relying
theieupon branded as a curse to hu
man society.
If journalism is to succeod in its
mission it must direct its efforts to in
'dividuala as intelligent men and not
as a depraved, morbid sot of mongrels.
In politics journalism should occupy
tho same high ground which it is pre
sumed to occpy in other departments
of thought, but it seems to he tho con
trolling idea of many umbitious jour
nalists that in order to fit themselves
for distinction and receive recognition
us political factors they must ransack
their vocabulary for epithets of vilill

ago. The lepubliean party represents
one side of this division and tho dem

government. Tho republican party
lias had control of the legislative and
executive departments and so has the
democratic party. Their acts and
deeds and policies while having such

journalist in dealing with political
questions and political parties to give
the people the history and records in
detail, or otherwise, and let tho intelli
gence of tho people decide which par

Insane and taken to the asylum by Sheriff
Houscr of Umatilla county on Saturday
hist. Stanton's mania is of a religious or

of his sister in Canada, together with a
prayer book she had bequeathed him. The
sad news preyed upon his mind so that ho
