A gigantic railroad scheme is under consideration by eastern railway com panies. It is proposed to build railroad from St Paul, Minnesota, to Pckiu, uhiua. The distance will bc about o,900 with boat transits across Bchring strait. One kind of protection that every body seems to want, says an Eastern exchange, is protection against the further immigration of undesirable foreigners, Mich' as criminals and paupers and people who can only bo a burden to the country; also protec tion against the hordes of Asia with its cheap labor. In those large eitics intricate incisures come before the Board for invosgtigation rcconini'indation etc. And from the fact, may bc, that all largo cities have their Boards of Trade many persons look upon the measure as one not authorized to be acted upon by cities of less notoriety and impor tance. But Union is of more impor tance lo us than either of those mr.g nillciently built cities. If Boards of Trade arc good for them, they arc proportionately us good for Lnion. Union, within herself, has many nalural advantages that other places lack. Shu is surrounded by good ag ricultural lauds; remoter sections are knocking at her doors and bartering for commercial relations. 2?ov industries and enterprises arc looking this way and asking corres pondence us to our present facilities and our future possibilities, This correspondence coinoii to private indi viduals, and county and city oflieials. who, perhaps, have not the time nor the information sought, to give the matter the attention it demands, hence, many correspondents remain unanswered. This could bc regulated by a well organized energetic Board of Trade. It would be impossible to list the num ber of things such an organization could do for ttie benefit of a town. We presume the measure will receive the attention of all our enterprising citizens and trust th it every person in terested in the welfare of Union, will come lo the court house to-morrow night and show by his presence, if nothing more, that he is interested in the matter. The preliminary slops have been ta ken, and wo now await tjio action of our eitizons, to perfect a thorough or ganization . We believe it it) a move in t!io right direction and that it will rc- ceiro tho hearty endorsement and co operation of the people of Union. SETTLED AT LAST. Their position gave them nmple oppor- ! tunity to make money out of the enter- i prise provided they were raoals ; enough and well organized. The i JCwuniner discovered the plot and in consequence of the exposure has a ' 5100,000 libel suit on its bauds, wiMi a prospect of others. . j According to Bismarck, the great European war will not occur until 1892, Bismarck is on the inside track and ought to know what he is talking about. Four years will soon roll around, yet in the meantime there will bo many changes, nnd the chances are against the great chancellor see bis prophesy verified. living to James llendcrshott, of the Cove, was in town tho fore part of the week. Having heard his name mentioned as possible candidate for the Senate, we asked him about it. He said ho was not particularly Rocking.tho nomina tion, nnd should make no effort to got it, but if iho democracy of the county should choose him, ho would servo to tho best of his ability. This is exactly tho right spirit. If Jim would get there, ho would bo anything else than n nonentity. A California excursion train of nine teen cars, including elevou Pullman Meopcrs, running in two t-eclions, left St. Louis with -1000 people Thursday nigl.t:, via thu Iron Mountain route; and u second train of thirty cars, in cluding twenty Pullman sleepers, in four sections, with 0000 people 'left Kansas City next morning via tho Missouri Pacific. These trains will joins at Fort Worth, Toxas, and from thero will bo run in six sotionri, mak ing tho longest and largest train that lias ever crossed the continent. It is estimated that seven-tenths of the men who run the various labor unions are foreigners. They came hero willi the ideas of the old world, in respect to allowing boys to learn trades. To protect tboinsclvcs they deem it necessary lo keep down the number of apprentices, and conse quently to limit thereby tho number of skilled laborers, and therefore maintain for themselves high wages and excluded privileges. All of which is foreign to the policy of the Ameri can government, undemocratic, arbi trary, selfish and unjust. Dive our American boys and girls a chance in your shops. A man Jiving in Mult nomah county has been trying for five years to gel Ins boy into a machine shop; he is a tine, bright, robust, in telligent lad now verging into man hood, but ho failed; not because the company did not want him, but be cause (hey have already all tho ap prenticed allowed by tho union of the mechanics, who run tho institti tion instead of tho men who furnish Iho -iioney. AV'e do not believe in such things and do not endorse them; we like lo sec tho laborer get along, but we like to see the American boy have a chance for existence. Stewart, in tho Suuato, introduced n bill to amund the mining laws of the United States, by providing that no person shall acquire more than ono mining claim on the same vein, or re locate a claim which ho has previously located, and also requiring that each patent for mining laud shall reserve the right of way through or over any mining claim for roads, ditches, canals cuts and tunnels, for the purposo of working other mines, provided damage-! occasioned thereby shall bo as sessed and paid for according to law. "Wo recently made n statement that "W. F. Butcher, of Umatilla county, was a candidate for prosecuting attor ney of this district, subject to tho will of tho democratic slate convention, to bo held on tho third of April in Pou dletou. Most of tho papers in tho dis trict have made a note ot tho same, and Mr. Burcher has beeoino quite prominent, ho much so in fact that wo have received several letters from var ious parlies in Umatilla county con cerning him, most of which are unfa vorable. But this is as It should bo. If a man cannot stand on his merits, let him fall. If may be said to .Mr, Butchers credit, at least, that ho is not afraid to advocate his claims be foro the people. The papers that are giving (?. O. Jlolman of Baker City their endorse iiienls for a nomination as republican congressman will perl aps bo interot.1- Tho Pine creek road case has been amicablv sottled at last . 'Alter much threatened litigation and much worry lo both parties, an agreement was ef fected whereby tho contractors pay to tho county 6J200, to ho expanded on Iho road. This is better for the coun ty than to trust lo chances of an almost endless litigation. There is no doubt that tho county had a good case, but tho chanco olj getting any more than this amount at the end of the supreme court after years of trouble and con tingent measures which have arisen, was somewhat precarious). Twelve hundred dollars from this source, to gether with a county appropriation, will put tho road in fair conditlmi for travel tho coming season and givo the citizens of Cornucopia and Pino valley an outlet that has long been needed. Wo trust now that tho road will be put in proper condition as soon aa practicable. Tho current number of ?c Went ShoreU accompanied by a largo tint ed supplement, showing Iho famous Shoshone Falls, of Snuko river, a cataract superior to .Mujjara in many respects, though carrying a smaller volume of water. Those monthly supplements will continue a feature of tho magazine for 188H, and will make a valuable collection of largo and spirited engravings of the most fa mous scenes of the Pacific Northwest. Tho illustration of the number are devoted to tho cities of Kast Portland and Alblna , and tho Quaker settllmont of Nowborjf. in thoChelialeni valley. The literary features are especially entertaining, consisting of stories, tkotches, poetry, and much valuable descriptive matter. In tho March number will appear tho opening chap ters of a highly interesting story of tho grout civil war, written by Jumcfc Last week, at Seattle, Chief Justice Jones imposed a lino of 5f0 and cots upon each of three Chinamen who had pleaded guilty to gambling. Before imposing souience, ins Honor was moved to the utterance of tho follow ing sensible remarks: "I impose this liaht sentence being influenced by the fact that these defendants are all for eigners, and that it appears lo my satisfaction from evidence given dur ing my short experience hero that tho olllccrs of tho city seemed lo be very zealous in raiding (ho houses of Chi namen very frequently, whilo right alongside tiie Chinamen's house, very often was some while person who was violating tho law ten times as repro bensibly as were the Chinamen, and tho whilo men do not scorn to have been meddled with. It seems somo' people manifest a disposition to treat Chinamen as though the y had no rights in this country. They are here according to law. and whilo they have no right tw violate, tho law, they have the same rights to fair treatment as a while man. A gambling bouse kept by a white man is more dangerous to American youth, 'meeds and begets more dMionoMy, is a strong allure ment to entice boys into evil practices, ami does more harm to our own peo ple than any number of China gamb ling houses can do. All crimes ought to be punished, whether committed by Chinamen. or white men. I do not want any body to consider (he imposi tion of those 6inall lines as precedents, as 1 will not considorthoin so."
