Last week the many readers of the Scout,
doubtless noticed, under the head of "Our
Poets," an effusion, Jumbled up like a mess
of butter-milk aud suiiar, signed bv our
friend "Luna Tick.'' Doubtless he did not
invite an answer, when lie wrote it. know
ing as he did its superiority over every
thing ele, but in a semi-poetical style, I
submit tlie following as an answer:
If all the men that ever wrote,
Since David, old (ioliath smote,
And Joshua saw the homey goat,
Dear "Luna Tick"
Is like a sleepy Berkshire shunt
In mud so thick'.
His deep productions make him great,
Aud as a bird that has no mate,
He will abide his humble faie
And sing alone;
If all his songs are out of datu,
They are his own.
And if on earth lie gets in tune.
Like frogs, before the mouth of June,
We hope to hear him echo soon,

church next Sunday. All are invited

.las. Turner, of Pendleton, was in
town, last week, visiting his daughter,
Miss. Verde, who is attending Ascen
sion school.
The prize ball at Oeer's hall, Wed
nesday night was very well attended,
and one ol the merriest times of the
season was had.
Miss Emma DeHass, a niece of John
Wagner, lias been quite sick during
tho week, but is thought to bo improv
ing at present.
Sam llloom is busily occupied baling
surplus hay. He will put up about
one humhed tons and will ship it as
soon as a Wir price- can be realized.
Tho Kpiseopal church received a
now organ from the east, Monday. It
is a fine instrument and of more volume-
and purer tone than tho old
organ.
E. K. Clough, one of the principal
mine owners in Pino valley, Wits in
town last week. His said that while
here he offered ono of our manufactur
ers extra inducements to set up a saw
mill in Pino valley.
Geo. F. White has bargained his
town property to Joseph Martin and
is thinking of moving with his family
to California in hopes a change of cli
mate will benefit his health. Mr.
Martin will probably give up his con
templated move to Iowa.
Win. Koenig has undertaken the
work of building tho vats, shelving,
elevators, etc., for the new creamery,
lie will also place in position (lie ma
chinery on its arrival from tho cist.
This directors of this company hope to
begin manufacturing cheese early in
tho spring.

of relatives of the happy couple were

Mr. Fisher is a son of I). C. Fisher of
this place. The bride is a daughter of
W. II. J'uiidull, also of Covo, and is
one of tlio handsomest ladies in tho
valley.
Such disastrous inroads are being
made on the ranks of tho old bachel
ors of Cove I hat the survivors are con
templating forming a society for their
own protection to bo in full force and
sway during the lomainder of leap
year. If such an organization is ef
fected it is safo to say it will number
among its members the most influen
tial, respected and polished gontleinen
of tho town.

15oth houses of congress have dis
tinguished themselves this week,
though in very ditl'erenl and unusual
ways. The proverbially noisy, turbu
lent House of Pepresenta lives has
been remarkable for its silence, and
the slow moving Senate -gave ilsolf un
reservedly to words, or rat her to speech
making.
Heyond settling tho Lowry-White
election contest in favor of the repub
lican, Mr. White, there is little of ini
puitanee to report from the House
except an account of its dailv routine
i business. The Stfnate, on tho other
i hand, has had great speeches until it
was tired even of eloquence. Senator
Piatt, of Connecticut, delivered a two
day's address on the subject of tho
tariff, in which ho criticised the presi
dent's message, charging that while
Mr. Cleveland was a free trader, ho
tried to evade (lie issue, and that the
recent speeches of Senators Kcnnu, of
West Virginia, aud Morgan, of Alaba
ma, showed them to bo protectionists
for their own states.
The coming tariff fight is some dis
tance off yet, probably not more than
a fortnight, but it is impossible to say
just when the bill will bo completed.
Mr. S. S. Cox i.f New York, in re
ferring to the fact that the House had
been passing a number of minor bills
in a quiet way during tho past few
weeks, said, "We are clearing the decks
for the tariff fight," and ho is in u po
sition to know the stage reached in tho
prepaiution of the measure.
Mr. Carlisle is in tho Speaker's
chair again, looking no worse for his
recent illness. He made bis appear
ance for the first time on Tuesday
when the blind Chaplain of the Houso
took occasion to render a little thanks
giving for this Speaker's recovery.
Senator Jiiddlebergcr continues to
talk about tho lirilish treaty in open
session and to ollend some of tho other
Senators, but - particularly Mr. Ed
munds by his persistent attacks upon
executive business and secret sessions
If the n-ginia Senator s own state
ment is to bo believed it is a pity for
nun to cnampion so good a cause as
the abolishment of the "star-chamber

he ever made was adopted, no bill ho
introduced was ever passed; that he is
made the victim of the rules of tho Sen
ate, and, m matter who is iu the chair,
he is always declared ott,tof order. Ho

for mo to L'tvo it a demonstration of
suppoit."
It seems that many peoplo through
out tho country have gotten Senator
Hoar's joint resolution confounded
completely with a joint resolution
presented to the If ousts by Hoprcscnt
ative Crain, of Texas, which has been
favorably reported from committee.
Mr. Hoar's amendment looks, to the
change of inauguration day from tho
lib of March to tho last Tuesday in
April. Mr. Cram's resolution proposes
to substitute the !Ust of Decoinboi for
tliedth ol iMareli as. tho commence
ment and termination of tho official
term of Members of tho House. It is
designed to do away with tho election
of Members between sessions, so that
those who are chosen in November
shall take their seats on tho first Mon
day in January immediately following,
instead of tho first Monday of Decem
ber of tho next your. There is nothing
in Mr, Hoar's resolution, which passed
tlio Senate by a unanimous vote, rela
tive to tho timo of meeting of Con
gress or tho election of Members.
The question now is how to har
monize those amendments so as to
enable an early ratification by the
State Legislatures which are now in
session, or which aro to convene tho
coming fall and winter.
Another feature of tho Crain amend
ment is that the Speaker can bo ap
pointed within ten days after his pred
ecessor's term expires. Congress will
bo at work within sixty days after tho
election, and the short session will bo
dono away with, by a fixed constitu
tional termination. Mr. Hoar's
amendment simply extends tho short
session two months, and changes tho
day for tho inauguration. Uoth propo

creased interest and attendance.
The weather is mild and pleasant,
business increasing, and the town al
ready beginning to boom with a great
and mighty boom.
Mr. P. M. IJurleigh .has completed
his hotel, and is prepared to offer to
the public first class accommodations
at reasonable rates.
The Wallowa Academy, under tho
efficient munugument of Prof. Newell,
i is advancing rapidly. Tho Prof, is an
earnest educator and doing much good
for tho town.
J. F. and J. A. Purleigh, sons of P.
M. llurlcigh of this place, and brothers
of H. F. llurleigh of Joseph, and Den
nis llerdino and family, all of West
Virginia, aro expected to arrive in this
valley the last of the month to perma
nently locate.
Tlio health of tho community is not
good at present. Drs. Gaily and Cobb
seem to bo the busiest men in the val
ley. Mrs. Zurcher has been quito ill
for some time with inllamatory rheu
matism, Mrs. Catherine Aikint our
obliging post mistress, is very sick
with sore throat and Mr. and Mrs.
Spritgg aro also very tick and there is
but little hope of Mr. Sprugg's recov

John McAllister, of Union county,
arrived in this city last Saturday
morning. Ho will return iu a few
days.
I. W. Ilaird's minstrels appeared at
Itinehart's last Saturday night. This
is their third annual tour through tho
