At Independence Miss Syinmie nllo was mortally stabbed by her topfather, Wm. Landreth. Tho mur der was as fiendish in conception as it was horrible in execution. With a 14-inch knife the inhuman wretch outered tho girl's room, ami notwith- tanding her screams and desperate resistance deliberately butchered her by striking fourteen blows Uon the body tind head. Any ono of four of the wounds would have been fatal. Ono cut penetrated almost through the head. The mother and two of tho boys wero aroused and interfered, but too luto to prevent the murder. Ono of tho boys (Wilburn, aged 13,) picked up a loaded shotgun, and while a struggle was in progress betwoon his athor, mother and brother, watched his ohanco to shoot the unnatural ither. Landreth tied, and tho older brother disarmed Wilburn before ho could accomplish his purpose. Land reth was captured, taken before a J us ee and bound over, without bonds, to await action of the grand jury, which moots in June, lie is now in iail at Salem. 1 COAST CULLINGS. Devoted Principally to 'Washington Territory and California. Near Lodi, Cal., fatally crushed by J. Phillips was a rock falling on him. Pat Riley, an old time miner, was found dead in his cabin, at Park City, Utah. It is stated that as high as $25,000 apiece has been offered for eomo of tho iron mines of Cle-Elum, W. T. Jean Dorado, a Mexican, was run over bv a train and killed at Los Angeles. John Kramer, a section man, was killed by falling off a coal car, at River side, Cal. D. II. McElhenney, a collector, was Btruck by a dummy of a Sutter street cablo car at San 1' rancisco, and died from tho injuries recoived. At San Francisco, Geo. Herman, 4 years old, whilo playing about a kitchen stove, was scalded to death by upsetting a kettle of boiling water, The people of Pocatello, Idaho, re cently hold a meeting for the purpose of petitioning Congress to throw open 2,000 acres for towns! to purposes. Alexander Dlack, onco a wealthy merchant of Stockton, committed sui cide at San Francitco. Sickness and discouragement aro supposed to have been tho cause of tho deed. An old gardener named Thomas Drohany, was found at his house in San Francisco, burned to a crisp, a coaloil lamp having evidently exploded and set lire to his clothing. Police Judge Lawlor gave a decision finding Mayor Pond and acting health ollicer Gale guilty of misdemeanor in maintaining a smallpox tent on the plaza, at San Francisco. John E. League, postmaster at Townscnd, Montana, died from poison by strychnine accidentally taken from his hands or clothing, ho having spilt a bottle of the drug over himself. It. Seaforth, an English laborer at tho Cascade tunnel, was killed. Ho jumped on a rock train going out at tho east end of the tunnel and made a misstep and fell upon the track. Four loaded curs passed ovor his body. The late sovero weather killed at least one-half of tho oysters on the bay, says an Olympia paper. The beds are bare during extreme low tide for a period of throo hours or more, and during this interval tho oysters frozo. The Supremo Court has decided tho local option law in Washington Ter ritory unconstitutional. The decision released somo twenty-eight persons hold in King, Kitsap and Skagit counj ties for violation of this law, and will possibly afi'ect many other places in tho Territory. The queen of the Cowlitz river tribe of Indians died near Freoport, W. T., and was buried with a grand Indian pow-wow. Tho Supremo Court of California atllrmed the decision of Suporior Judge faullivun in favor of Sarah Althen m tho Sharon caso. The court, however, has decided to reverse tho order grant ing counsel fees. Tho amount of comuel fees oririuullv allowed by udgo Sullivan was $55,000, and tho amount of alimony was $7,500 addi tional to tho annual allowance of $2,500. Tho Supremo Court fixed alimony at $1,500 and an annual al- owanco of $500. Four masked men, all heavily armed, entered tho Citizens' Dank, and presented a pistol at the head of Cashier W. T. Keynolds and demanded that he hand over tho cah. Whilo pretending to comply Rey nolds slammed the door of the safe to and turned the lock. He was at onco laid out by a bullet from tho pistol of ono of tho desperadoes, which killed him instantly. Tho bank was then ransacked and all tho money in the cash drawer, some $2,300, was taken. An attempt was made to open the safe, but in this the robbers failed, as the sound of pistol shots wis heard, and several people came rushing to the bank. In a few moments the town was aroused and twenty or thirty armed men hurried to the bunk. The robbers were just mounting their horse3, and a hot lire was begun, in which Thomas Evan, a ranchman living ucar the town, was killed. In the melee four of tho citizens were wounded, but not fatally. Tho surviving robbers then rode away with the booty, followed by a posse, which after an hour's chase caught the desperadoes and took thenl back to Limestone. Tho leader was found guilty of murder and strung up. The other two were placed in charge of a strong guard mi I s'artod for Fort Washitt, where they were turned over to tho United States authorities. President Agasniz has decided to send twenty-fivo tuns of concentrated ammonia down tho burning shafts of tho Calumet and Hoi-l.i mino at Calu met, Mich., to put out tho tiro com pletely, if possible. Warden Drown, of tho Utah peni tentiary, has been removed for, it is alleged, inhuman treatment of a con vict named Miller, by confining him in a "woat-box" for thirty-six hours, with tho thermometer several degrees below zero, causing his feet and limbs to be badly frozen. Mitchell introduced a bill which pro vides that hereafter any mining com puny incorporated for the purpose of mining shall bo allowed to lease, prospect and develop mines in any portion ot any Indian reservation in the United States upon such condi tions as may bo agreed upon by tho Secretary of the Inteiior and the miners, out uat no prospecting or mining shall bo carried on until per mission has been given by a majority of the adult male Indians in the reser vation, and that all revenues arising from fees, rentals or sales shall be for the sole benefit of tho Indians on the reservation. aiso, a resolution, which was adopted, instructing the Committee ou Commerce to consider the ad visa bility of inserting a provision in the river and harbor bill requiring all work to be done by contract. Hermann also submitted resolutions passed by the Eastern Oregon, Nevada and Idaho Wool Growers' Association, ho!d at Witineinucca, Nevada, pe titioning agaiu-t disturbance of tho existing duties on foreign wool. Whitthorne, from the committee on Naval Affairs, reported a bill for the appropriation of $175,000 for repair of tho U. S. steamship Hartford. Davis, from tho committee on Com merce, reported a bill to reward native Fsquimau for acts of humanity to oliipwreeked seamen.
