W WGHLIUJ I "J THE OREGON SCOU' AMOS K. JONKS. KDl IOK. The Oregon Scout has as large a circu lation as any three, papers in this sec tion of the. State, combined, and is cor respondingly valuable as an advertising medium. Friday, October 21, 1S87. Union and Vicinity. Nights cool. Weather fine. Mornings frosty. Still they come and subscribe for the Scout. Everything in the brings good prices. vegetable line .Stage from Cornucopia arrives on time loaded with paengcrs. Go and see A. Levy's new drops i goods, 12 yards for a dollar. , Wo are a little late in issueing the paper this week, on account of our i paper not arriving on time. Cattle are reported to be dying around and at the head of Uuttc creek in the John Day country, with the black-leg. . Astoria wants a street railway. Wo i won't object. But we want a' street : railway between Union and thcdo.iot. The fronts of several of our business , houses are receiving a fresh coat of paint which adds much to their ap pearance. Don't forgot that the Orkoon Scoit ' is the best and most reliable paper in Union county. Subscribe for it. Advertise in it. No use for any one to send their money off elsewhere, when they can , get such bargains as arc advertised to-day by A, Ley. j The smelting works to bo built at Tacoma, W. T will occupy about 25 j acres of ground and give employment ' to about -1UU men. Mrs. J. E. Davis has the thanks of this office for a basket of very line and delicious apples of the variety known as the Mailey sweets. We are afraid something is wrong with our friend Levy, across the street. .Seems by his advertisement be is going into the nowspaper business. The net taxable property for 1SS7 will probably reach over $2,500,000 The levy for county, state and school tax will likely be about 23 mills. The first of next month regular freight teams from Cornucopia to Un-I ion will be on the route. The teams will be taken from the linker City lin and put on the Union road. If you want a fine pair of shoes or boots, call on Mr. C. Vincent, who lias just received a large assortment of la test btyles from the east. He will not be undersold for cash. Try him. Recently one Zaek Doyle and Joel Hewitt, of I'ino valley, engaged in wrestling when Doyle fell, or wat thrown, breaking one of his limbs. Wrestling is sometimes expensive fun. X. H. Harris, who has been loaning money in Union for tho past month, has moved to La Grande, and is now manager of the Oregon Investment Co., where his many friends will here after find him. Our public school is progressing finely and accessions to its numbers are made daily. With proper nourish ment we can have ono of the best pub lic schools in Eastern Oregon, but people must turn out bettor to our school meetings. What has become of the road outfit that were going to put the Pine creek road in better condition? It is fine weather now and more work can bo done now than when tho rain sets in. We want to sec that road put in prop er condition ; tho sooner the better for all parties concerned. A man who will unexpectedly rush into a printing office and ask if we have any slieeps heads or mutton chops about tho office, when ho well knows there never waH a printing office whoso operatives were not of tho most intelligent persons of the age, richly deserves a card of go to Jo. Wright's and sec his stock of goods. Mr. J. W. Meaty, a former supervis or of the Oregon Insane Asylum, was arrcstvd in San Francisco a few days ago and-will bo brought to Salem to answer charges brought before the grand jury of Marion Co., upon which several indictments have been hud against him foi taking funds not prop erly belonging to him. Wo learn from tho Statesman of Salem that Mr. J. A. Eakin has passed his examination before tho supremo court and been admitted to the Bar. Wo alfo understand that he went down near the Columbia river bar ami passed another examination. Didn't learn which was the severest test, hut we do know (hat in times of danger, Jimmy is brave. Another valuable nquisition in the shape of implements has been added to the woikiug machinery of this office. It is an indispcnablc article to tho foreman, and more so to the editor. We wonder how we have got along without them so long, and no doubt our readers will observe a decid ed improvement in tho make up of the paper. Portland, like the farmer mentioned in some of the juvenile reading books who waited for his neighbors to help him harvest his crop, has found out that tho surest wy to get a thing done is to do it herself. And now she has concluded to build that "long felt want," a hotel lit for kings and other dignitaries, from the funds of her own monied men, und not go begging after foreign assistance. It is about time for Portland to show tho country that her spinal column is strong enough to btur A ov.-a imtcrnrUieiH Large quantities of yrain are- bt-iug brought fo market. Gr.indpa Swackh.uner has been quite sick. He is slowly recovering. Mrs. J. A. Denney. of Pino valley, made this office n pleasant call this week. Miss Taylor, of Clover creek, former of Union, has been down visiting her many fricmh In re. Quite a number of persons fiom different fections have returned from the Mechanics fair. Mr. Kibbe will move to Pendleton, shortly, for the winter, iis he is engaged in the building business there. If one thinks apples cannot bo raised about Union, they should take a peep into Sf O. Sw.ickhamcr's orchard. Mrs. Lou Uemillard and her sister, Miss Emma Jones, left for their home at Butte City, Montana, Wednesday. It is decidedly wrong for any nier Phant to play a trick upon customers who intending to buy, don't do it. James Westerdale, T. X. Prollit K. A. Leep C. W Haynie and several oth ers of Pine valley, weie in the city this week. ( ovo Your overdue account at the drug store is impatientlv awaiting your attention. Don't neglect it an other day. The Mechanics Fair is said to bo much better than ever, and those who attend will have no occasion to regret ! their visit. Mr. Springer's residence is fast Hearing completion. That, witli other , improvements made about his orty, gives it an air of comfort. prop- Henry Chandler is behind the conn- ter at Drake's cash Moie at present, j Mr. Chandler will move his family to ,' Union and remain during the winter. , I Taylor Green was subpoenied by j ; U. S. Dept. Marshal Frush as a. witness ' ' before the V . S. grand jury at Port- 1 j land. He left Wednesday afternoon. I ; Mr. 0. M. Jones, the grocer, and Al. Gardner the jeweler, have been doing ', ' some very cxtensive(V) carpenter work j about their respective, places of bus' , ness. ' Born. To the wife of Dr. George O'Conner, of Pine valley, on tho Sth. i inst., a daughter. And now the do mestic happiness in Doc's home is just . about perfect. Judging from the amount of hay J that has been shipped from the valley t cinee harvest, it must be getting I scarce, and before grass comes again ! we may expect it to sell for high l prices. Head A. Levy's mammoth ad. found elsewhre. Levy knows what printers ink will do when put in the right place. Call and see his immense stock of goods, and he will give you aston ishingly good bargains. Mr. A. K. Jones, of the Scorr, left last Monday on a business trip to the Metropolis. He will, while there, take in tho Mechanics Fair and other places of interest. He will return about the middle of next week. The U. S. supreme court has ren dered a decision upon the Kansas pro hibition law that the property of brewers and liquor men, when rendered valuless by the act of the legislature, must be paid for by the state. E. O. A woman, who was returning from a foreign trip recently, cheated the custom house officials out of the duty on about ifo.OOO worth of lace, by adorning herself with it made up into garments. She was attired through out in lace, except her brogans. One of tho robbers of the Harney stage was captured in Canyon City, a few days ago, by Shfrili Lockwood. His name is A. Walters. On his per son were found a lot of stamps and somo papers, and other evidences of his being one of the guilty parties. W. II. Hembree, a former resident of Umatilla county, has instituted a libel suit against tho East Orcyonian.. We have not heard how much he proposes to draw on the E. O. for, but wo presume, something like a million or so. Probably tho E. O. will com promise for a few hundred thousand and take the fellows receipt in full up to dato of suit. Mr. Simon Miller left yesterday for Portland, accompanied by his son Charles. Mr. Miller is having very poor health. If he feels able, when ho reaches Portland, ho will probably ex tend his trip to California. In that case his son-in-law, Mr. P. B. Wilson, will accompany him. We trust tho change will benefit him and that ho may be fully restored to health again. There was a rousing big school meeting Monday afternoon Tho three directors, tho clerk ami two other tax-payers were present. It an swered the purpose, however, and a A k mill tax was voted. It was scarcely known that a meeting had been called or a Inrge number of voters would have been present. The inclination of the people of Union is to have a good school and wo think wo are safe in saying that our citizens pride them selves iu tho educational interests of the young people of Union. Why do not th- people of this town bestir themselves and awaken to a more energetic and business principle for tho w.lf.iro of our town. It is not necessary that thoy neglect their own business, but make it a point to bring new aquisitions here. Tho fact is there is loo much selfishness among our Dconle and that there is a lack of enterprising, wide-awake men in this placo is too apparent, homo tune ago there was an enterprise suggested and many of our citizens were ready and willing to take an active part in tho matter and wcro ready to invest their mouuy in it. Comidurablo talk was indulged in and tomu corrusondunco hud, but a lull is in the market and wo hour nothing more, about it. Kuvivu it to a bticccssful the. work and push turmmutiotii Sh riff lli.tniltoii ami wile returned from Salem, TUt"-da. See nntiee of Auction Sale at North Powder, by II. M. Hughes. Mr. George Wright and family re turned from Portland, yesterday. Bead the notice of sale of lames, etc., by .1.11. Uinehart, Suminerville. J. W. Slid tun made a (lying trip to Baker City, Monday, on It gal bibiuess. Our merchant" are doing an im mense trade which fact speaks .well for Union. Mr. Al. Goodbrod left Newark, N. J., a few days ago and will probably break in upon us about Sunday. Dr. D. Y. K. Deeiing left yesterday to return to Scio, Linn comity Or., where he is at present practicing. The Ladies Foreign Missionery So ciety will meet at the Presbyterian church, Friday, Oct. 27th, n't 2:110 o'clock. The Baker Citv JJcmovrat sa Sher ill' Hinshaw's boarding house is well patronized both regular and transient boarders. Attorney J. B. C rites loft for Port- ! land, Wednesday, to be gone several 1 days, and will combine business with i,.!1Hi,nv i - - j A man named Syne Frye was killed j at Long valley, Idaho, by his partner one Sward. Sward had his prclimi i nary trial and was acquitted. J Someone, somewhere, somehow got j into a row in this county, but sonic I how we couldn't find anyone who I knew anything about it. No charge j niade for this delectable piece of news. Tho life presented on our streets, Thursday, would have made ordinary men wish to live always. The throng thronged till we nearly lost sight of everything else but tho throng; we then filled our eyes with tears. Phillip Hohuglon, of Lower Powder lost a purse, the other day, contain ing over $1100. lie was very much excited about his loss, lie was made happy again, however, when a Mr. McCoy came along and restored to him his purse intact. Frank Bio's. Implement Co., of Island Citv, are now prepared to sell i wagons, buggies, hacks, or any other article of farm implements and machin ery at lower rates than ever before sold in Eastern Oregon. They guarantee all goods they sell. Try them. 0 During the wetk marriage licenses wcroissind u W. 1). Hobinpon and Miss Mary O. Leep, of Pine valley; Merritt Wilkinson and Miss Marv J. Hundalt. of Cove; P. B. Wilson 'and Miss Allie Miller, of Union. The re sources of Union aro still developing. Mr. Frazier, of Pyle canyon, left at this office a radish of hugli dimensions, as we thought, which weighed seven pounds, hut when he said that was nothing, that he had them that would weigli li) pounds, wo stared and stared at him, and wu realy think ho thought we didn't believe him but we did. Frank Bio's Implement Co., of Isl and City, carry the largest stock of standard implements; to bo found in Eastern Oregon. Their terms and pri ces defy competition. Thoy always have on hand extras and repairs for goods they sell, which is a matter of great importance to the purchaser. 5 W. II. Cove and two boys, all joek ies, and another man, were arrested and lodged in jail in this city, on com plaint of A. B. Conley, of Sandridge, for stealing an overcoat and other articles, during the county fair. Cove and tho boys were arrested at linker City, the other man at La Grande, and there is one man out yet. The way of the transgressor is hard, both for them selves and the tax-pavers of the county. A Mr. Boss, living at Keating on Lower Powder, having occasion to go to tho timber to make some shingles, while absent from his camp discov ered largo volumes of smoke in tliat direction. He immediately suspected his camp to be on fire anil on arriving therejfound it all in Haines. His tent, blankets, quilts, duster, overcoat, a set of buggy harness and Sharps rille all burned. Ho barely saved his buggy. The farmers had cut largo quantities of cord wood there, but after hours of hard work he succeeded in saving the wood. CAHD OF THANKS. We hereby (kviro to extend our niont finccro thanks to tho many friends who havo co kindly and willingly giv en us their iibMstancu tinting the piek news of our daughter Grade. Tho wil lingness with which our numerous friends havo given us their aid, ren ders it unnecessary to mention names, as all scorned to vio with each other in rendering nssiBtaiicu in this, our ead bereavement, and wo shall over fondly cherish their inanv acts of kindness.
