THE OREGON 3GOOT. AMOS K. JONES EDITOR, City iin.l County Official Paper. AXoniEii oi'Jisixa. Why should Kastcrn Orofion not be come u Htiar ti'cclufiiir country? Ex periments in Union anil Wallowa counties. Iiavo proven conclusively thatsoryhiiniisintlicnions to the soil anil can be grown successfully. 1 lorc tofore the ponderous and expensive machinery necessary in manufactur ing sugar from Mtrglimn, lias been u great draw back to the development of this intlnst.iy , but the inventive gen ious of the age has overcome the dilli culty to a great extent. Commission er Coleman has just made an olllcial visit, to Fort Scott, Kan., where the department of agriculture U conduct ing experiments in making sugar from sorghum by the diffusion process, and and expresses himself as being delight ed with the results obtained already. He say tho experiment consists in Iho trial of a new process in making sugar in thi country, which dispenses en tirely with costly and ponderous mills 1 and steam engines etc. , and use a tar simpler and lesh expansive method j for extracting the juice, by which nil I the saccharine matter is obtained, in steul of about half, as heretofore. ' The new process, is called the dilfusion j or siliimtioii process. The cane is cut , into chip-, and pressed into u battery of twelvi ct!ll each holding a ton of chips. Hot water i then applied, which rapidly exhausts the saccharine matter, and o thoroughly that there is scarcely a trace of it Iclt. The cells are eutirelv practical, being speedily lilted, manipulated and emptied one man attending to the entire operation. Tho mill at Tort Scott is capable of worUintr ui) every twentv four hours i which one hundred and lifty tons of cane, j i;i nam. r. xo tun. A yield of from It a to liftecu tons of cane per acre was being seemed, which would produce, by this new process, from l-'OO to l.iOO pounds of sugar. This sugar is worth, by car load, " one-half cents per pound. Nor is HiK all. To eve ry ton of cane, aside fioin the sugar in it, there arc. some ten or twelve gal lons of molasses and abo the seed rais ed upon tl e cane, amounting to about live bushels per acre, and just, as good for feeding all kiitd or stock as Indian corn. Indeed, the seed, it is estima ted, will do for raising cane, which i a merit possewd by no other sugar plant . The department is alo conducting manufactory experiments in Now .lersey. "The results of these exper iments upon the country." says com inissiouor Coleman, "will, I believe, bo most beneficial. Our nation is pay ing SlOO.OOO.ooo. annually to tho sug ar producer iof other countries, and if wo have 'demonstrated that we can profitably produco it on our own farms it is a matter or the highest, import ance to tho country. It. will not only keep this money at. homo, but will save to our people $?.', 000, 000, annual ly in custom duties. I cannot see why our people should not go to mak ing sugar. A complete sugar factory will cost about as much as a lloiiring mill, and can be run at a great, protil, according to present experiments. Fanners are glad to niio rain at $'J per ton, and at that il pays better th'iu other farm products. I look nit on the experiments as being as im portant to this country .as tho inven tion of the cotton "in. This new process will be tried on sugar cane. ' ' AVe sen no reason why our farmers cannot engage in the culture of sorgh um, and the mnuufacture of sugar, j with prolit. We advise them to try it. 1 raise wheat and have Untiring' coiimuiiv? Other towns not as as Union have organized them.
