ROSIMG REVIEW ISSUED FRIDAY MORNINGS BT THE REVIEW PUBLISHING CO. J. R. N BELL, Editor FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1887. - CI1EAT POLITICS AO A IX. THE PROHIBITION COLUMN. A S EMM OX OUT OF Clll'JCClI. The Drain Echo plavs Shakebpcar's lago in very good Style. The editor or "Bill Flat," we do not know which, ono and the same we suppose, and immaterial if he were both, says, "What 'we wished particularly to condemn, whether in Republican cr Democratic papers, was the habit of assuming that the great body of either party is grossly dishonest, hypocritical and insincere. Now wc sininlv said no such thing, and cl allonge the proof, therefore all you said in regard to this "straw man ' demands no answer at our bauds. Wc never did "assume that the great body of either party is grossly dishonest etc." But made argument and proof thereof, in our editorials, showing the insincerity of the Republican party, which the erudite editor of the Drain Echo lias never essayed to answer. Now another thing, he quotes a part of himself iu a former article, and then say, The Review whine3 considerably lecau3e we drew a legitimate infer ence from its wild political rant, and says we invauou "tue eaercu ihccuku of social relations" etc. His quotation was insincere from the fact that which he quoted did not refer to "social relations etc," while his com ments did. The "doctor and butch er" part of your former articlo was what wc believed to be "sickly," and we feel a little nausea from it yet Your reference to Douglas connty citizens; Blaine and Carlysle, will not help you, but only proves your sugges tion to be true about the devil fish. But inasmuch as you seem to be spoil ing for a fight on this lino we will give yon a nut or two to crack for your cntle readers. As a matter of fact O which would be superfluous to prove, that the Republican party for many years past has claimed to be the virtu ous party, while it has characterized tin nffmncrats. as constituting the - 1 11 L. 1 whiskey party, e snaii not uy m !;. fa flisnrnve the latter, but VU19 wvw ' - - - ' will call attention to the pseudo pre tcntions of the former claim. In the state of New York two years ago the Republicans weut before the people with the promise that if elected to the Lc'dslatjirc'they would submit the pro hibition amendment to the people. Result, G5 Republican majority in the Legislature, Democrats unanimously kept their hands off;- Result 2d, 53 Republican majority against the sub mission of the amendment to the peo. tile. This was done in America where it is supposed the majority of the pco- i.le oushttorule, and that by Republi cans, said then that this kind of proceeding was dishonest; and say so now. Again, Oiegon has at least from 2500 to 3000 Republican majority clean cut, and now if every Democrat ivid cfn wnnl I vote against the 111 VlJ ovvw " amendment, your party Mr. Editor, remarkable and historic for 1 "Moral ideas," could carry this amendment in epite of all the "whiskey Democrats" in Oregon. Since the Democrats could naVr nr rlaims to morality, one thing we will do, we will show your inconsis tency to those high claims, when as a party you are not a whit better than other people. You mention some fif teen pitominent Republicans of Doug las county, and sny that 4,so far as you linnost. straightforward A parson's paper should certainly have an occasional sermon in it. Sermons are in place work adays as well as Sun days. But naturally the parson is loth to print his own sermon It might not look well. He leaves the printing and publishing to his congre gation as a rule. In this case he is kind enough to allow some one else to do his preaching too. Should he not appove, he has only to contradict on another page. I remember once hear ing a sermon a young clergyman had been invited to preach by an old friend of his father's, and when it was over, the old pastor, who had been taking it all in most carefully, met the young man on the pulpit step and said, in his own gigantic voice, that tho whole ic liring congregaliow could but hear, "Young man, I can't thank you for that sermon!" when he iu his own turn came the same evening, he not only did not thank him, but contra veiled all tho young man had said. He had preached baptismal regeneration, a doctrino the old man had in abhorence himself. The baptismal regeneration I wish to preach, is what every man is called upon to crf orm himself, using ink and his own name as the viable sign, the regenerating effects to follow shortly in due course, on all his fellows. This is a public service, according to constitutional (not ecclesiastical) law and canon, and for convenience sake held simaltaneously in all places all With dreary they pour down their throats the poet wu feel inclined to cry. "Who would not shun the urcouth place, As if fond leaning where her infant slept, A mother's arm a serpent should ?m brace: So might we friendless live and die unwept; Then keep the softening veil in mercy drawn." What mother can be seen that soft pillowy on her arm she has nursed, one of tle.sc "brute-men" of a few years hence? Then, mothers! rouse up your selves make these monsters real to your imaginations. So will you be pre paring ot this eighth day- of Novem ber, a holy day to yourselves: The votes that you knowing your souls are in your command you will make jubi lee votes calling back 'otes. Votes that will undo the wrongs of ages that will call a new set of laws ioto existence, laws that will not jive this devil a long gilded chain, but that wilj bind him close, hand and loot, that he be no longer romp up and down and to and fio in our streets entil ing our sons into his caverns that ho may turn them out bye and bye, brute men whom we ounselves with tears teach ourselves to forget that they were once the light of our eyes, and the desire of our hearts. Mr. Drain Echo this pending election will force you to make your claims good as Re publicans, or you will come down from your stijts and arrogance where you have been perching for so long a time. We have said as a party, the Republi cans have been uncertain throughout the nation, on this temperance ques tion especially, and we believe they arc.
