Tho New York State Board of nealtL haa analyzed 84 difierent brands purchased in tli3 State, and i ;und most of them to containa9uni or lime, many to such an extent as "to render them seriously objectionable for tiso in food. The sale of adulterated baking powders has been prohibited by statute in several States. It will bo in tho interests of thopubli:: health when their sale is made a misdemeanor everywhere, and the : penalties of the law are rigidly enforced. j The only baking powder yet found by chemical aaalysi3 to be entirely freo from lime and absolutely pure is the "Royal." Thi; - perfect purity results from , tho cxclusivo nso of cream of tartar specially refined and prepared by patent processes, which t-. tally remove from it the tartrate of lime and other impurities. JEttSE APPLEGATB.- ' I7ie iMelininff Day of Xobte Vianrrr. A few days ago the southern train from Roseburg brought to Salem a stout and pleasant-faced man, accompanied by a tall and wiry bailt man of ' nearly eighty years. The former had a pleasant smile and kindly voice, while the quer ulous speech and listless stare of the old man told that his reason had be come dethroned, and that this big and good-natuied looking fellow was his keeper, on the way from Southern Oregon to the State infirmary, for the insane. The deputy sheriff was Clay Slocum, 4i Roselmrg, while the poor, demented old wreck at his aide was one af the grandest men of Oregon Jesse Applegate, the "sasje of Yoncol la," as he was called in the years that have flown. . The brave old man, whose name is part and parcel of the history of "the time that tried men's souls," is among those who are in the condition of living death He is go ing the same road that his sturdy old companion in arras- Gen. W, Nes mith went before.- ; The gates of the asylum have cloEed behind this r brave and true-hearted old prairie giant and we only pray that death niay come to his relief, as it did: to the honest old Yankee who sleeps tho long sleep on the green banks of the Rick real. Jesse Applegate has never been the same man since the defalcation of Sam May, who was Secretary of State un der Governor. Woods, ft made the first direct inroad into what he had saved up, for Jesse : was a hospitable man and found the little word "no" a very hard one to pronounce. He lived to see the homestead he had hewn from the pines, sold under a foreclosure and his children turned out upon the roads to got a living as j best they could. while strangers sat beside the hearth where his children were born. " Who that heard it, will "ever forget Nes- mith's eloquent eulogy on him when he rose at Salem, saying: "As Sar geant of the Oregon volunteers it be comes my duty to call the roll of my brother soldiers Jesse, why don't yor answer to your name, the first and the noblest on the listl" This is no gush of sentiment over two old men, the one dead and the other worse than dead. It is a tribute of love to two men who ar& beyond the reach of flattery and one of whom has passed into that august presence before which the voice of praise grows mute and the tongue of malice ; upbraids in ' Vain. Jesse Applegate was a rode old hero, simple and pureaiinded as a boy. We he-trd him eulogized iu Washington eighteen months ngo, by a Confederate Brigadier, as the grandest man in all the great West 'lle was the noblest Roman of all your early pioneers,' and my long march to Oregon I shall never forget," said General Jones.
