Added to the above symp toms wers loss of memory, voice, appetite and lack of nerve force. My family physician did me no good and by the advice of a friend, I bought Dr. Turner's Treatment. The right way to do it is to put the belt on iu such a manner that the driving pulley will have a tendency to rough up the splices; thou, when the splices come to the crossing, they will smooth .each other down instead of catching under the corners of each other and tearing open a splice. - A quarter twist belt should never be used when it can be avoided; but when it is used; it should be as narrow as practicable, and the pulleys should be large. In. creasing the width of a quarter-twist does not increase its power in the same ratio as in a straight or cross belt. There is not more than one percent ad vantage in using an oiled belt with the e;rain side next to the pulley, which will hardly compensate for the ugly look which a belt presents when put on in that manner. A Dcnf Mule Marring-. A Jacksonville, Illinois, paper of J tine 16th, has the following: A large circle of relatives and friends gathered in the parlor of the Illinois Deaf and Dumb Institute at 5 p si. this after noon to witness the marriage of Mr. Ambrose Stephens of Robinson III., to Miss Ellen S. Berry of Brighton, I1L, one of the matrons of the institute. The bride being a mnte, and the groom deaf, Dr. Gillett, the Superintendent of the Institute, performed the mar riage ceremony, using part of the Epis copal service and part of the Metho dist service. He- stood facing the couple and used the sign language in addressing them, speaking the words at the same time. To one who has never witnessed such a ceremony it is a sight not soon to be forgotten. The bride and groom both repeated that part of the service required of them. The bride was attired in a very hand some tap colored traveling dress. The happy couple left on the 7 p. m. train and will make a tour of the State, visiting friends and relatives Quite a large number of very useful presents were received. The bride was a cousin of W. W. Kentnor, of this place. Sixty white girls fill the places in tha Oregon Oity woolen mills left va cant on the exodus of the Chinamen a few months ago. They receive thirty dollars a month, the same paid the Celestials, and spend their money at home, while the almond-eyed heathen subsided on garbage aud took the coin out of the country. Quite a change for the better, every honest man and woman will remark. The huge drill which became fast at the bottom of the artesian well on W. S. Ladd's farm near East Portland, has been extracted, and the contractor hav ing received a lot of ne-v bits from New York, is joyf ujly proceeding with this work. The -well is now down 16G0 feet, and is going toward the center of the earth at the rate of from three to ten feet per day. i The Doodle Band of Iloseburg, com posed of Yankees, will come down on us about the middle of the month. We bespeak for the boys a warm reception. After they get away with a bucket full of clams apiece, they cant help but feel good. But before returning they must diet themselves on mush and milk, or else there may be trouble in the fait and fertile valley of the Urcpqua. Coast Mail. The New York World says that Judge Walter I. Hayes, of the Daven port Circuit, is about to lje impeached by th Iowa House of Representatives for giving aid and comfort to the op ponents of the Prohibition law. Menedmnus being told one day that it was a great felicity to have whatever we desire, said: "Yes, but it is much greater to desire nothing but what we have." Efforts, to be permanently useful, must be uniformly joyous a spirit all sunshine, graceful from very gladness, beautiful because bright. Cailjle. The rhenonunal Colored Servant Tb Gi riled Sword Temper of the Weapon. Perry's vfcjt to Japan was as complete" an epoch for the people of that country as Columbus' to the native of America. Tire latter disappeared under the alien visitation. Dai Nippon has profited r it. Events are dated in Japan from tne appearance of Perry just as we com mence an epwh from the birth of the s Saviour. The Tenno lived in tho Naisu-' Maru, part of the Oyeno or fortified ' palace grounds of the old Tycoon. Horticultural!-, T remember, these grounds were perfect, great, camellia trees, l)eautiful flowers of all kinds, hand some drives and the gardening culture. Ihe inclosure was moated and invulnera ble to any .attack devoid of artillery, sheltered aad2 guarded, against any au central gate the O-te-go-mon, gate of the great hand was the one we entered by. Shrines, grotesque monuments and queer tiled buildings were in plenty, and men and officers, but no women. Not a female face was seen in or about any of the official residences, except at the entertainment at the Homa-goten, . Sawa's palace, when singing and dancing : girls gave an exhibition during the even- . mg. Japan is changing, so that I pre sume in a few years all the old will liave disappeared and with it much of rare liistorieal and artistic interest. When I was in the country, in the iu-. terior a foreigner was a curiosity, equal to the first Chinaman or Jap seen by us here. On a visit made to the summit of Fuji-yama in the summer of 1371 1 went to the famous hot springs at Hakone; at nearly every tea-house our party was as much of an exhibition as Jo-Jo or the woman with big feet is here. A colored servant, dark as Erebus, whe had with me, was a phenomenal .ect to the innocent Japs. The men and women would come up to him, try to rub the black off with their hands and be sur prised they could not, and laugh over it with the contacioua and hilarioim Ha the people o much enjoy. My watch would have been a passport anywhere into the interior, as they never tired looking "at the wheels go round." Inso lence and suspicion was never met with among the common folk, but only from the Samurai. These fellows are born brawlers and when flushed with saki. were dangerous. All wore swords then, now done away with. They set great store by tliis weapon, and a Japanese noble often wore one worth $1,000. The occupation alone of all the trades of swordsmith in old Japan was an honora ble one and the members of the guild of gentle blood. Iyeyasu, fonnder of the last dynasty of Shoguns, left a motto that "the girded sword was the living soul of the Samurai." When forcing: . the edge of the blade the ancient sword smith put on the robes of the Kuge class or nobles of the Mi-ka-dos court. The temper ofthese trenclumt weapons excels any Toledo trusty. I recall a visit Iwa-kuru and his official family paid the late Admiral John Rodgers on the flagship Colorado. While in the cabin Admiral Rodgers Fighting Jack Rodgers he was called in the service, to distinguish him from the present Ad miral C. R. P. Rodgers, whose sailor name is Chesterfield Rodgers, on account of the urbanity with which he could ask the deck '..ficer to take a reef in the top sails or set a lower stun'sail was show ing the Japanese San-jo-dai-jin the mettle of a sword presented to him by the emperor of Russia, when it snapped like a whipcord. Iwa-kuru took his long katana, heavily mounted and rich in cunriing metal work probably an heir loom in his family for centuries bent it hither and thither and almost tied a bow knot in it. Our admiral was not a little chagrined at the bad behavior of his Russian weapon. Afterwards, however, the San-jo-dai-jin sent him a superb na tive sword, probably equal to his own in temper. I remember hearing one of the court officers say that it was not consid ered a good sword that would not at one blow cleve through the dead bodies of three men. Young noblemen were wont to try their maiden swords by bribing the headsman to use them at public exe cutions, and fierce, inhuman Yakohins tested theirs not infrequently in the old times on dogs and lazars on the public highway. Ex-Naval Officer in Phila delphia Times. Action of Acids on the Saliva. The influence of acids in retarding or arresting salivary digestion is further of importance in the dietetic use of pickcls, vinegar, salads, and acid fruits. In tho case of vinegar it was found that 1 part in 5,000 sensibly retarded this process, a proportion of 1 in 1,000 rendered it very slow, and 1 in 500 arrested it com pletely; so that when acid sf-1" are taken together with bread tlu. . -ect of ' the acid is to prevent any salivary diges tion of the bread, a matter of little mo ment to a person with a vigorous digcw- tion, but to a feeble 'dyspeptic one of some importance. Tlere is a very wide spread belief that ch inking vinegar is an . efficacious means of avoiding getting fat, and this popular belief would ap pear from these experimental observa tions to be well founded. If the vine gar be taken at the same time as farin aceous food it will greatly interfere with its digestion and assimilation. Nine teenth Century. Symptoms of Pen Paralysis. There is such a thing as pen paralysis, sometimes called "writer's cramp," and it is a very inconvenient affection. It is a weakness of the nerves of the hand, caused by the constant contact of metal, a kind of electrical action upon the nerves and produces uncontrollable tem- bling. Writers who use steel pens a great deal, and telegraph operators, are subject to it. It is treated by electricity applied to the nerve centers and by nerve tonics, and readily yields. I have had it, but am in a fair way of recover. Professional clerk should not use steel penholders if they desire to remain free from an attack of the disease. E. P. Walsh in Globe-Democrat. ' i - .
