I We publish on ovr first page this week the report made by Mr. Gilder sleeve reti ring Chief Engineer of our fire department. It is worthy the pe rusal of our City readers and the con sideration of the Board- of Tiustees. The hydrant recommended will prove of great additional security to a large amount of valuable proterty. The present Board of Trustees is truly eco nomical and is laboring to save to the City every cent they can. This is right enough but the expenditure of a few hundred dollars now may prove the saving of thousands in case of a fire. we tremble to contemplate the devasta tion that would follow the burning cf either of the large Livery stables when full of hay and no water within reach. In this connection we feel warranted in saying that this paper is friendly to ward bur department and hope to see such discipline established in both com panies as will result in efficiency and good service in moments of demand.
