The Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland has left
Dublin to vis.it the Queen at Balmoral. A
rumor is current in the former city that
the Earl intends to offer his resignation.
A Berlin dispatch-says: The invitation
of the United States to the Congo confer
ence will be presented to President Ar
thur in Washington within the next few
days. ,
Dr. Schweinfurth, the famous African
explorer, has started on a new tour of ex
ploration at the head of a scientific party
fitted out by the Berlin Academy of
Science.
A Cornwall, Ont., dispatch of last week
says: The Scott temperance act has been
carried in the united counties of Dundas,
Stormont and Glengarry, by about 2,000
majority.
Reports of great suffering and distress
come irom Labrador, owing to the small
catch of fish this year. Government aid
will be absolutely necessary to ward off
starvation.

The government demanded a vote and an
election on 1,000,000 francs for the Chinese
war. Amid great excitement it was re
ferred to a committee.
Says a Victoria. B. C. dispatch: No
further news has been discovered of the
lighthouse keepers who left for the licht-
house in a boat, and there is little doubt
that they were drowned.
The French press continue to urge upon
the government that reinforcement of the
army in Tonquin will complete the French
success in that country and be the means
of bringing Lhma to terms.
The vintage of 1884 is the best in France
since 1874. The present year's wines will
be delicate and full of bloom. The excel
lent quality of the vintage gives a flatter-
. ing prospect oi the wine trade.
The Mudir of Dongola telegraphs to
Cairo that he has sent scouts to the scene
of the murder of Colonel Stewart, in order
to ascertain further particulars in regard
to the fate of the Colonel and his com
mand. (
The Chamber of Deputies of France has
elected a committee, instructed to report

cattle, and a majority of the members de
mand that the duties upon corn be also
increased.
A bomb was maliciously exploded last
week upon window six of the Gendarmes'
Barracks. Bellecour quarters, Lyons,
France. The windows of the barracks
were broke and the wall damaged, but
nobody was hurt.
The Londsn Times' Dongola correspond
ent complains on behalf of himself and
his brother correspondent, that all tele
crams to and from England are subject to
military censorship, which render their
telegrams practically worthless.
High Sheriff Greghan, of Cork, enter
tained the Duke of Cambridge last week
at lunch, after the Duke had made an in
spection of the forts in the harbor. The
Duke expressed himself exceedingly grat
ined with his reception m Ireland.
Australian advices state that Hanlan
will row Beach for the ehampionship of
the world on the first Saturday in Alay.
1885. He will also row Clifford for 200
some time within the next six months
Both races will occur on the Paramatta

Admiral Courbet has decided to block

The prize fight between George Full
james and Harry Gilmore, which was to
come off last week near Toronto, Can
did not take place, owing to the failure of
the latter to appear. Fulljames stripped
and entered the ring, and claimed the

was completely dispersed after its recent
defeat, leaving the killed and wounded
upon the field, and abandoning" an im
mense quantity of provisions. Many man
darins were killed. The weather in Ton
quin is cooler and more favorable for mil
itary operations.
A native, who recently arrived at Wady
Haifa from El Abeid by wav of Morawaee,
reports that no steamer has been wrecked,
but a dahabrich, the crew of which were
murdered within a day's march of friendly
territory. The native reports that El Mah
di's troops occupy the heights along the
Nile north of Khartoum, and have thrown
broken telegraph wires over the river.
Thomas Burt, Radical member of par
liament, thinks that while the American
laborer is the best paid, the English la-
. borer is the best off; that the former's
chances are uncertain, while those of the
latter are steady, and that the chief ad-
. vantage to the laborer of America consists
in openings and advantages afforded by
chances of obtaining possession of land.

The Hawaiian brig Dora, from San Fran

loss on the coast of Lower California. The
steamer Estado de Sonora is ashore at the
same place, and is probably a total loss.
Thirty-one mills at Fall River, Mass.,
have shut down for an indefinite period

Says an Allentown, Pa., dispatch: A re

S. S. Davis, the Cincinnati banker who
assigned recently, gives as the cause of his
trouble the defalcation of $10,000 by his
paying teller, Samuel Judor. Judor has
confessed and says he lost it in wheat
speculation.
Says a Columbus dispatch of a recent
date: The fire in the Syndicate mine at
Carbon Hill has been extinguished. Ihe
effort to smother the fire in the mine at
Sand Run is a failure, and the flames are
still raging.
Agents of the Alton, Wabash, Missouri
Pacific and Rock Island roads have noti
fled the Burlington road that they wil
make the passenger rate from Kansas
City to Chicago $13, first-class, meeting
the cut which ihey allege has been made
by the Burlington.
A Milwaukee, Wis., dispatch says: The
committee having in charge the matter of
the Newhall house victims last week form
ally presented the monument at the Forest
Home cemetery to the city. Acting Mayor
Baumgartner accepted the monument on
behalf: of the public.
John Gerhardt, ex-alderman of Neenah,
VV is., went home last week under the in
Muence of liquor, and with a revolver in
his hand threatened his family. They
made their escape from the house and
Gerhardt then shot himself in the breast,
inflicting a fatal wound.
A prize fight with hard gloves, for
purse of $500, took place last week on
steamboat on the Monongahela river,
near Pittsburg, between Denny Harron
and James Connors. Thirty -six round
were fought, resulting in the defeat of
Connors. Both men were badly punished,
The : tobacco factory of C. A. Jackson
Co., on High street, Petersburg, Va., the
second largest in that city, was totally
consumed by fire last week, with the con
tents, involving a loss of $140,000; insur
ance, I $100,000. Four hundred colored
operatives are thrown out of employment.
James Pennistan and George Smith, of
Argyle, Avis., have been arrested for caus
ing the death of the formers sister,
beautiful girl of 17 years, lhey cnmm
ally assaulted her a week ago. Great ex
citement prevails at the place and huch
ing is freely talked of. An examination
of the accused is now going on.
Last week, twenty miles north of
Jamestown, Dak., the wife and 3-year-old
child of Karl bchroeder were burned to
death in a prairie fire which the woman
was trying to prevent destroying wheat
stacks. The mother and child had reached
ground burned over, but were suffocated
by smoke and fell, and their clothing was
consumed on their bodies.
J onas Bobbins, of Pattenberg, N. J., af
ter having suffered for two years from
what the doctors called consumption, ac
companied by an abscess in hia side, a few
days ago, when he was declared to be
nearly at the point of death, had a violent
coughing spell, and coughed up a piece of
peanut shell. Since then he has improved
rapidly, and is nearly well.
The Texas Pacific Railroad Company
has five writs of attachments against it,
issued by United States courts in New
York. The suite are for the recovery of
money and for breach of express contracts.
The attachments are made upon bonds
and other property belonging to the Texas
Pacific Railway, now on deposit with the
Mercantile Trust Company.
D. E. Seymour, President of the bank at
Chippewa, is the assignee of Fred Adler,
of Bloomer, Wis., who made an assign
ment a few days ago. The liabilities are
placed at $25,000, and the assets $50,000, a
good portion of the latter being book ac
counts. The cause of the assignment was
damage to stock by high water, slow col
lections and general depression of busi-

Four masked men. recently broke into
the residence of Nelson Helfrick, near St.
Boniface, Pa., and forced him to give up
$1,700 in gold and currency, which he had
secreted. The robbers are believed to be
the same gang who not long ago entered
Farmer Gates' house and compelled him to
disgorge $2,000, at the point of the re
volver. Several persons are suspected,
and will be arrested.
Twenty-four years ago Samuel Fries,
aeed 58, of Sternville. Lehigh county. Pa.,
vowed he never would shave until a Dem
ocratic President was inaugurated. His
beard is over six feet long and sweeps the
ground. He said he had his razor ready
when Tilden was declared elected, but he
was not inaugurated and there was no
shave. Fries carries his beard plaited and
rolled up under his vest.
General Grant. believes the best way to
promote trade with Central and South
America would be to re-organize our con
sular system. He suggests that in every
one of the southern ports there should be a
consular agent appointed, who should per
form the duties now discharged by consuls,
and be allowed to engage in trade, to act as
the agent of American merchants and
manufacturers and introduce their goods.

I believe it to be a duty I owe to sufferers

The effect of Compound Oxygen in this
case gives a striking proof of the law gov
erning its action, it had no specific rela
tion to the disease from which the patient
was suffering, and did not act directly up
