Not a week jiasses that some fresh and disastrous illustration of the croaked and questionable conduct of Mr. Blaine during his official career is not made public. But against the per fect honor of Mr. Cleveland's official action not one serious Mow has been eren aimed. The more closely his ca reer is scanned, the more plainly it ap pears that the guiding . principle of his conduct has been the great truth that public office is a public trust. The 3IYor of Buffalo and the Governor of New York are not found to be involved in vast speculative schemes whose value depends largely upon action which lie can controL He is not the broker of tsach enterprises. He is not fouad en treating to be let in upon the ground floor, nor promising not to. bo a dead head uor proposing chemes in which hi influence may be serviceable, nor, when hopelessly entangled, in a net of his own letters, begging a friend to save him by asserting what the same friend Las told him is not true, nor, lest he should lose votes, declaring that he never owned property which undenia ble documents prove that he did own, - -Harper's Weeek'j. It is much to be desired that an ex hibit of Oregon products should be made at the exposition which opens at New Orleans in December. McCarthy, the well known . statistician of San JYancisco, who pub lishes a volume annually of statistics ... which are collected with great indus try from all quarters of the world, has at last succeeded in obtaining from the Imperial office at Pekiu thd official 'census of the population of China. According to the rata thus obtained, the actual population of the Chinese empire is 280,000,000. While China is still the most populous empire in the world, it will be noted that the coun try usually denominated India has a population nearly as large, although the whole is not under a single sover eignty. - Garfield reejived 214 electoral otes and Hancock 155, in tbo election of 1880. Notwithstanding Garfield's proponderous majority in the electoral college, he was a minority candidate in the popular vote. On the face of the returns he obtained 915 more voces than Hancock, though three counties in Texas failed to send in their re port to the Secretary of State, ,whicb, if estimated at the same vote for g v ernor would have given Hancock a ma jority over Garfield of 3,156. A lady whose name we did not learn, Tin dcrtook to organize a dancing school in Mark's hall last Monday evening, but failed to ootaia sufficient inducement- It was expected that the young men of Rose burg would take more interest in the matter than they did. I The evidence before the grand jury in the caseof Charley Thompson 'was not deemed sufficient to warrant an indictment. Those acquainted with the circumstances believe the young man was innccant of any intent to commit a crime ; but his difficulty here will teach him a valuable lesson. L. Langenberg is excavating, preparatory to putting up a brick on his grounds adjoin ing Dr. Hamilton's improvements. It is to be 60 by 20 feet and will be completed in six weeks. Messrs. Roberts & Kins are the contractors. When completed the build ing will be occupied by Mr. Langenberg's boot aud shoe store. We would be obliged to . two or three more friends if they would contribute large potato each. We would then be as sured of a good winter supply. On Friday night of last week about o'clock, Enos Goodman's team became (rigthened near Hogans store and ran away. Mrs. Zigler has purchased the prop erty how ocenpied by Mr. Nanery, and will soon move into the same. The new church at Myrtle Creek, under the supervision of Mr. Andrew Jones, is rapidly approaching comple- ion. '' .... . The Democrats have elected eleven out of twenty-one Congressmen in Ohio a clear gain of five as compared with 1880. There were numerous loads of wood hauled to town during the week. Wood-haulers are taking advantage of the fine weather. Baney Matthews left for the Kitti tas coantry, Washington ierntory lasi Wednesday, whither he goes in pursuit of a fortune. There is no one in New York -who has ever been swindled by Gov. Cleve land in stocks to which he gave his offi cial position to make valuable. "Which side should a person sleep on ?" asks a correspondent Well, if she hasn't locked the door you might as 'well sleep on the inside. Ex. S. I. " John Rast is constructing a fine ad dition to the brewery between the old building and the new one recently fin ished. Mr. Rast is one of of our most enterprising citizens. A cyclone in Kansas carried away a bank building, but as the cashier had departed in an opposite direction the day before, it wasn't thought worth while to hunt after the bank. A train leaves Portland on the west side every day, loaded with the rails and other material for the Oregon Pa cific railroad, which the steamer Ya quina brought. There is no doubt but the road will be completed to Corvallis next month. Thos. Farquar has had a number of town lots surveyed on his place on this side of the river. They are located be tween the railroad track and the river and are very laree. Each one would w w make a small farm itself. Tom is of fering them for sale very cheap. The first Quarterly Meeting for the Roseburg Circuit M. E. Church, South, will be held by Rev. E. G. M'chael, - P. E., at Bogg's school house, November 1st and 2nd. Abraham Wheeler &, Co. came near losing their ware-house, with all its contents on Monday night of this week. By some means fire got through the walls of the grate under the en gine stand, and some large timbers that were well saturated with oil caught fire but burned slowly, and at daylight, whea the fire.naii went to the ware-house m start a fire to steam up, lie fire was just breaking through the floor.
