clause erased. He offers to fight whoever
questions his good faith in the matter.
The Transvaal government has assumed
a more conciliatory attitude toward Eng
land. President Kruser explained to the
Volksraad that he has not asked Germany
for protection, but only for support and
protection that would only become neces
sary In case Transvaal becomes involved
in war.
A desperate fight between French forces

nese troops took place last week in the val

A storm on Lake Michigan blew away a

says that Deputy Sheriff Fred Ward and

In a wrestling match at Irving Hall,
New York, last week, between A, Gosner
weir, champion of Europe, and Augustine
Schmitt, champion of Germany, under the
Swiss rules, Scnmitt pulled his antagon- j
ist's arm out of the socket, and was
awarded a purse of $250.
An! Elkton, Ky., special of last week
says:! George Jolly went to the house of
Scott Cobb to whip him. They engaged in
an altercation, and Jolly shot Cobb in the
breast. Cobb then wrenched the pistol
from Jolly and shot him twice, killing him
almost instantly. Cobb's wound is serious.
The strike of the Pittsburg stove mould-

5 per cent. The manufacturers have
agreed to take the strikers back, provided
they make application as individuals, and
not as members of the union.
A Boston dispatch says that private ad
vices from the superintendent of the Calu
met and Hecla mine state that no damage
has been done to the mine. There were no
gas ! explosions and the mill continues
operations as usual. Smoke from burning
timber will delay underground work in a
portion of the mine for a few days.
The federation of trades and labor
unions, at a meeting recently held in Chi
cago, adopted; a number of resoltuions,
among: them one censuring President Ar
thur for not filling the position of chief of
the bureau of labor statistics. It was de
cided to telegraph Arthur that he had vio
lated the law in not making the appoint
ment. Charles E. Hinckley, who went to New
York about three years ago from San Fran
cisco, and engaged in the canned goods
business, disappeared from his office two
weeks ago, and has not since been seen.
It is said he had been speculating of late
and met with misfortunes. At the resi
dence, as given in the directory, Hinckley
had not been known for over a year. -

Richard Clark, an employee of Forepaugh's
circus, while opening a ventilator in a cage
recently, had his hand seized by a tiger,
and while trTing to release himself was
seized by two tigers and dragged inside
the cage. The animals were driven eff
with iron bars, but not until after Clark's
arms and legs had been crushed and mu

! News just from Mexico, Mo., tells of the
drowning of four persons in a stream near
Florida, Jackson Hickman, Mrs. Hickman,
his daughter-in-law, and her two children.
Hickman drove into the stream, which was
greatly swollen by rain, against the pro
testations of several bystanders, and was
immediately swept down the current. His
body has been recovered, but the others
have not yet been found.
