E. C. Ham ilton, Baptist missionary at RoSeburgt was preached October 15, 1881, by Rev. IX' T. Sharp, assisted by B103. Smick and Webb in tiie Presbyterian church, to a large number of sympa thizing friends, from the text: ."The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of th Lord."' -Job, lsu Chap.,- part of 21st verse. She united with the First Bap tist Church of Chicago when she was twelve yeais cf age and remained a member of that church until she united with the San Diego Baptist Church of California, to which place she removed with her parents nine years since. We were, married September 16, 1883. I have always thought of her as a gif1 from the Lord, and I shall not mcurn for her with a broken Lea it, for she was Cxl's own child and he had a light to t ike lhu to himself. It was uiy custom before going to church to kneel by her fcidc while' she prayed Goct to speak through ui3 to the people, and blens my sermon, and make it a real help to the congregation. She is a stranger to most of you, but those of you who atten l the services tt Granga Hall" were not strangers to her, for she learned yo ir names from mr, and ruide you the subject of her daily prayers. Hers was the minis'. r of prayer. Death came not as a surprise to her. Eleven months since she told me she should not live but a slort time, nd three months ago sho prepared a part of her burial clothing, and gave mo full instructions concerninir the disposition of her effects. She even told me what portions of Scriptui e hhe wished read nt her funeral ; psalms 23d and 103, and requested that her fvorite hjuin He Leadeth "Me" be sanj on that occasion. She also said that it wr.s her wish to be buried in Ri.e'jur, in a quiet way, with as little ceremony and show as possible. There was nothing visionary in lit1' idea of heeven. To her it was all real. It was a place to which she spoke of going, in the same manner, and with as much deligkt, as she spoke of going to her home in San Diego. Our granger friend, George Genger, is constructing a fine residence on his place at Pine Grove. It will be, when completed, one of the neatest country buildings in the county. He at once volunteered to pronounce the fuueivl ovation over Crawford's remains and returned to consult his friend King whom he kept busy for pome hours selecting choice words from the dictionary apropriale for the occasion. When Don returned for the funeral, what was his surprise to meet Crawford sound and well. It wa3 only cold wate-' that he had swal lowed and had ehtirely recovered from the shock. Died. In Roseburg, on Saturday, October 1 1 th 1S84, Frederick Rodgers died of consumption. He was twenty years part. Together with his parents, Mr. Rcdgers had left the Willamette valley, where they had resided, -mA was lr:u el'n ; to Ca'if orn"a in s -arch cf A restoration to health. Having arrived in Roseburg he was unable to proceed further and h's j-mr.iey terminated in a decent grave in thft Masonic cemetery in toe presence of quite a large concourse of sympathizing strangers. When el ath tikes those who have grown old and weary on the road of life, 'we say "it js well," bur it is a difficult matter to utter t' e winie sentiment while looking into the grave upon the remains of a man only twenty years old. We received this week through the politeness of Hon. B. Hermann from J, L. Baker of Colo's valley, mammoth potato measuring fifteen inches in length and nine inches in circumference. It is a beautiful smooth root with a p".s ple-redish cast and belongs to the nieshanic variety. The seed came from the Blue Grass re gions of Kentucky. When the first dispatches from Ohio indicated a great .Republican, victory Hon. Timothy Ford endeavored to raise the flag on their pole in the court house yard. For some unaccountable reason the halyard- became entangled and the-. flag, hung at half-mast tor some time. Quite indicative of the fituat;on. A number of prominent Republicans of Roseburg who were so jubilent over the first news from Ohio, when the tide commenced to turn, made it con venient to go to Tea-mile to make a speech.
