which Haverly s minstrels have been per
forming, has been summarily closed. It
is rumored that the step was taken on ac
count" of non-payment of rent. The com
pany has experienced a bad season.
At the medical congress, which met In
Copenhagen, Denmark, last week, Dr.
John b. tfillings, assistant surgeon gen
eral. U. fc. A., in behaii ot the American
Medical Association, invited the congress
to hold its next meeting in Washington,
in 1887.
Those who suffered losses at the time of
the bombardment of Alexandria by the
British are becoming impatient' in their
demands for indemnity. If not settled
soon, they threaten to make a great pub
lic demonstration to bring a pressure up
on the authorities.
The Advanced Liberals held a meeting
in London recently. They resolved to
establish a league, which should labor for
the reform of the House of Lords. I hey

England and Holland offer to raise the
blockade of Tonorn and give the Rajah
100.000 rupees if he will release the crew
of the British steamer Nisero, which was
wrecked on his coast last autumn. If the
Rajah refuses this offer England and Hol
land will combine to punish him. .
The thunder storms which swept over
the north of England and Scotland re
cently were almost unexampled in sever
ity. Many buildings in Edinburgh, Leith
and other cities were partly demolished
by lightning. Dundee was enveloped in
darkness for an hour, and traffic was sus

Willoughby is at Tarafatee with 10,000
Hovas, who are mainly relying on fortifi
cations and torpedo pits. Measures have
been taken to retire, if necessary, to Am
bost, fifty miles inland.
A great sensation has been caused in
Vienna by recent robberies of the Aus
trian mails. Not long ago a letter con
taining 15,000 florins was abstracted and
now the whole mail bag is stolen. The
bag contained only valuables and regis
tered letters. Among these last were
checks amounting to 280.000 florins, sent
by the savings banks in Pesth.
A Marseilles dispatch says: A plot to
escape was discovered recently among the
Erisoners at the prison in Boulevard
'have. Twenty-five men secured crow
bars and files, and arranged a plan to kill
the wardene and break out. One, how
ever, informed the authorities, and the
rest were put in irons. The plot is said to
have originated in the prisoners' fear of
cholera.

A New York dispatch says: The leading j

gone crazy by recent Wall street losses, is
quite well, and will soon appear on the
exchange.
The Congressional committee, to inves
tigate the Soldiers' Home in Milwaukee, '
have arrived there and will begin taking
testimony.
A Truck ee, Nev., dispatch says: The
Truckee and Sierra Valley road is reported
to be in an almost impassible condition,
owing to the late storms.
Dog stealing has been reduced to such a
science in Boston that a protective society
against it has been formed, one man start
ing it with a contribution of $1,000.
Round Stone, a police officer from Pine
Ridge Agency, is in the Powder and
Tongue valleys, in Montana, with orders
to bring back the 300 renegade Cheyennes
now wandering in that country.
A Chinese leper was discovered a few
days ago in the state prison at San Q den
tin, Cai. The directors have concluded to
ask the Governor to pardon him, on condi
tion that he shall at once return to China.
Postmaster General Gresham has been
thoroughly overhauling the subordinate
offices of his department, and will call to
sharp account several heads of bureaus
and divisions for laxness of discipline and
shirking of responsibility.
A disastrous fire occurred in Cincinnati
recently. Twenty dwelling houses, the
Little Miami depot and the lumber yard
of Hinton & Cole were burned. Hinton &
Coles loss is $90,000. One fireman was
injured and will likely die.
-Three children living on a farm near
South Perry, Ohio, named Robert Wood,
Louis D. W ood and Kate Shaw, all under
ten years of age, were burned to death in
a j barn last week, having gone there to
smoke, and in so doing set the building
on fire.
The First Comptroller of the Treasury
has given an opinion that there is no au
thority for the payment of claims of the
Creek nation of Indians, aggregating $19,-
740, alleged to be due under article 5 of
the treaty of August 7, 18? 6, and that
there is no appropriation under which it
can be paid.
The attorney of F. E. Hutchings, the
ban Jbrhncisco strangle, has nled a peti
tion with the Commissioner of Insanity.
requesting that his client be examined as
to his sanity, as from the stolid indiffer
ence manifested when the death sentence
was pronounced there is ground to believe
that Hutchings is of unsound mind.
William J. Lansing, once one of the
most brilliant lawyers of Cohoes. N. Y.,
tried to kill himself recently by dashing
huge granite paving blocks against his
head, and also by dashing his head upon
the pavement. He had been arraigned in
the police court for intoxication. He will
be taken to the Utica insane asylum.
Eli George and Buckhart, local pugilists
of Pittsburg, Pa., engaged in a bare
knuckle prize fight in Lawrenceville last
week for a purse of $700. The fight took
Elace in a tenement hOHse and was won
y Gerehart in twenty-seven rounds.
Both men were badly punished. George
was so weak that he was unable to leave
the room.

At Conception. Duval, county, Augustin
Perex, Atlas Elguerra and Fellipe Arta-
lano became involved m a quarrel con
cerning some stolen horses. Artalano
drew a revolver and shot Perez, killing
him. Perez was a noted bandit and horse
thief, and has been engaged in numerous
broils on the frontier.

WHEAT there is no heavy volume of
business in progress. Growers do not take
kindly to the comparatively low ruling
prices, and a good deal of grain is being
fuaced in warehouses in preference to be
ng forwarded to market. The demand is
active, and exporters are ready to take lib
eral consignments of good shipping qual
ity, provided it can be obtained at $1.32
ctl. This figure fairly represents the
situation at the mement. It is possible
that transactions are made at $1.333 and
even at $1.35 per ctl., but business at these
E rices is exceptional and easily explained
y certain attendant circumstances. On
call there was a fair disposition to specu
late on the future of the market, though it
was not general enough to create any par
ticular enlargement of the record of sales.

BAGS AND BAGGING The market
for Wheat Bags has proved disappointing
for holders thus far. Prices are actually
weaker than they were a month or six
weeks ago. A good many lots have been
sold, but as no one wants to carry stock
over to another season there is consider
able competition for custom, and this of
course tends to depress the price. It has
been figured out, over and over again,
that the supply was inadequate to the
wants of the coast. But it is evident that
buyers do not believe the story, for there
has never been a season when there ap
peared to be such good opportuni
ties for speculation, and yet the spirit
ef speculation is notably absent. We
quote best quality Calcutta wheat
