From the amount of energy displayed in this direction, it would seem that the forests of fir aud cedar of our Coast range of mountains are soon to receive a boom. From every tppaarance he has been doing a thriving business along the road. His turnout is very neat i and tasty, an in dication of the prosperity; and success of the Pacific Coast's greatest Democratic journal. Mr. Andrews is himself a first-class rustler. The Examiner duriug the forthcoming cam paign will be anxiously looked for, as it is a great paper. J. S. Purdom, the retiring sheriff of Douglas county, on the expiration of his term of atSce disposed of what property he had here and left the county. During the canvass m which he was elected to the office of sheriff over an old and respected citizen (through the influence of the railroad vote) we warned the voters that he was but a carpet bagger who owned nothing in com mon with our people, and would, if elected, get what money he could out of the office and then leave the county. In this predic' tion our prophecy has fxiea fulfilled. We now laarn from official sources that more than this he ha9 taken the atubi and books of the off ce with him. The following is the verdict of coroners juiy in tha case ot Indian John, who was recently killed ot liis home near CauyouviiityState of Oregon, Douglas cou:ity : At an incjuest held at a house known as the Patchen house on Elk Creek in Canyonvilie precinct, Douglas county on the 17th day of July, 1881, before Thomas Wilson, a justice of the peace in said county and precinct upon the body of Crazy John, there lying eleud, th? following jurymen being sworn to inquire into all the circumstances at tending the death of the said Crazy John, decided that an unknown person on or near the 14th day of July, in the year 1884, shot him with a pistol or gun, in the right side cf the head, he low the ear, ball ranging to the left side of the head, abo' e the ear, causing the death of tho deceased immediately. The written verdict wast made, signed, and delivered to me this 17th day of July, 1884. Thomas "Wilson, . J ustice of the Peace. A .Suggestion. While the bridge is in course of construction it would be a good plan for the citizens of Koseburg to have a pidewa'.k or foot path on the north jside of the bridge to accommo date foot passengers. We have heard this suggested by a nu nber of citizens, and have made inquiry and learn that it will cost about eight hundred or one thousand dollars to have this addition to the bridge constructed. This addi tion may at first seem unnecessary at the present time, but it will soon be absolutely requiried and will cost much more than it would to have it con htr.ueted with the bridge at the ptosent time. It is a necessity at the very out set, and would render footmen and teamsters less liable to accidents. If some of our enterprising citizens will take the matter in hand and raise the requisits fund for this purpose arrange ments can be made with the county and contractors to have tin? addition to the structure. It would confer a lasting benefit upon the citizens of East and West Roseburg and save accidents and probably life and property. Select School. I will commence a select school on Monday, July 7th, in the house of Mr. Newt-omb, in th-? southern part of the city of Roseburg. At the Chicago Driving Park July 10 there v.as a special trial for West mont, the pacer, with Firebrand ad run ning mate, to a wagon. As Campbelj drove his remarkable pacer out on the track, it looked as though they meant to show speed, and as they came down tho stretch for the word everyone watched the flying horses. After they passed the turn at tho clubhouse the whole crowd know that remarkable t'me was being made. - , - f Tho quarter pole was passed in 0.:50?( the pacer kept his gait steadily and left the half in 1:00. The thrce.quarler pole was passed faster than ever be fore, at 1:30, and still the gait seemed to increase in swiftness. The crowd began to cheer, and just as the team came to the distance stand West moot broke, coming in under the wire in 2:01?, the fastest recorded time. Had the crowd repressed its exultation for a second, the time, no doubt, would have been less than two minutes. Tho at tendance was 10,000. Westmont was purchased by J. M.
