M'ao curtains about the crib caught from a match thrown upon the floor without being extinguished, and the flames almost instantly communicated with the bedding, stand cover and window curtain. Tho flames were extinguished -with some difficulty, and the most serious result was the inhalation of smoke by Mrs. Flett, who has since been somewhat indisposed. Briiiht and early Monday morning a party consisting of John Aiken, Chas, Zigler, Jo Sheridan and Jo. xiiken armed and etiuipped with the latest improvements et gun ana tackle, star'.ed for the north Umpqua, re solved to bring in a bountiful supply of trout aud venison. They returned Wednes day much refreshed and exhilerated by the chase. They report six trout, one arey squirrel and a chip niunk, a dead coon and a half grown pheasant, and claim that they actually killed a snipe and a young deer but a3 they failed to bring back the feathers of the snipe or the hide of the deer, this part of the story is questioned by some incredu lous persons. Madame Grundy even goes so far as to suggest that it was a lamb instead of a deer that the boys captured. But then we can't blame them, as they wers hungry aud had to have meat. Wednesday evening the first great wrest ling match for Oregon took place between the renowned Scotch athlete, and D. A. McMillea of Bodie. McMiUen won, having four throws out of seven. The fall returns have not yet been leceived, which is owing to the strike of the operators, or the fact that the State has gone Democratic. The dispatches, howavar, inform us that Proctor Knott is elected Governor y the usual largo majority of 40,000. Anothsr" Stage Bobbed I The stage going ! south Friday night of last week, was stopped on the sum- rait of Wolf creek hill, eight miles south of Glendale, j by two men sitting by a camp fire within a foot of the J road. They presented a double-bar- reled shotgun and coolly ; demanded Wells, Fargo & Co.'s treasure boxi which was handed out and the driver ordered to xaove on. The box was broken pen and relieved of its con tents, $10 and a few letters. The pas sengers, of whom there were three, and tho mail, were not disturbed.
