Comstock, who went to Cali fornia in search of health, is reported to be seriously ill. James Fay, son of the late James D. Fay, is at the Metropolitan, but soon expects to go to the front in the employ of the railroad company. ' . Mr. Pogue, and old and respected citizen of tins county, was adjudged insane by the County court, and taken to the asylum by Sheriff Purdom this morning, . James L. Corder was married to Mrs. Jane Dimmick on lafet Sabbath, near Elk ton, in this county, Justice Benedict officiat ing. The contracting parties have our best wishes. Oar old friend Charles Lapoint, who started for Sacramento in search of an im mense legacy, returned disheartened. Wc regret to learti that he has fca quite ill since his return. Hon. J. C. Hutchinson has engaged in the real estate business in Southern Oregon. His intimate acquaintance with this section of the countrj , a well as In .character for reliability, eminently qualities him for the business. Frank Noble, of Fluke & Noble, millers, purchased of N. Hanks, Sheriff of La!;e county, formerly of DougTas, was iu town this week on his return from Salem, where he had been with a prisoner. The strawberry festival at Marks' hall oa Wednesday evening, for the benefit of the Presbyterian church, was a success socially and iiaancially. The ladies in charge of the affair deserve much praise for the art dis played in floral decorations, which served to titakrt the scene pleasant and inviting. The grq?8 receipts amounted to $39.15. Ruble of Polk county, is stopping in Roscburg. lie is on his way home from Jackson and Josephine counties, where he ha- been looking after his miaitig interests on Coyote creek, which have been in litiga tion for some two or three.years, but finally awarded to him by the decision of the Su preme court. James L- McCormick, special agent of tha general lauu oilice, is in Roseburg looking after the u.terests of the Government. He was fourteen days making the trip from Washington to Oregon, over the Northern Pacific. He expresses himself well pleased with this section and states that between Portlaud and Kose"buig is the be3t looking country that ho has seen on the entire, trip. There appears to ba quite an excitement' among the railroad men on the southern ex tension, the exact cause of which we are not permitted to disclose. In this connection however, we may state that a libel suit has been commenced by Chas. A- F. Morris, Chief Engineer of the O. & C railroad, against the Tolaris, for an article published ia that paper several weeks since. J- T. Flynn, agent for the North West News, gavo us a pleasant call on Wednesday last. Broker M. C. Miller is with us once more. He ia somewhat improved in health, but we are sorry to say that his condition is such that he is suable to resume his labors at present. Mrs. Miller has had a severe at tack of pneumonia since leaving Roseburg, but has nearly recovered her usual health. She is stopping at ier father's, Mr. Patter son, in Albany. The oitizsns of Roseburg have waited un til a late day for some other town in the coantv to take steps for the proper celebra tion of our National Anniversary, and no movement having been made in this direc tion, concluded to invite their neighbors to come hers. The committees appointed at the meeting, which appear in Another place, ensure a successful result. The State Tencher-a' Association for 18S3, has been ajmointeil to meet in Salem, June 26, and will continue in session June 27, 2S and 29. The Civ nit court was occupied noarly "all of 'ust week in the trial f James Beckley, charged with murder for killing Heniy C. Levins, which resulted in an acquit tal. Had we the space we would pub lish the entire evidence. Sad as were thci facts of the homicide the evidence fully justf ties the verdict. The prin cipal facts established on the trial were all proven before Justice Benedict, on the preliminary bearing, and when he refused to admit the defendant to bail it was a surprise to every one present We are not inclined to find fault with magistrates who act conscientiously in the discbarge ef their duty, nor do we claim that Mr; Benedict was not sin cere in this matter. But he showed a want of judgment that utterly disqual ified him for the "position he holds His unwai ranted action in ihis matter entailed thousands of dollars expense upon the connty, besides the expense, misery and suffering to the defendant and his famUy and all for no purpose. Mrs. Sexton, accompanied by her son, Frank Niday passed through the city last Monday, en th air way to Coos Bay to visit the family of Grundy Owens, whose child was so severely injuied a short time since. Martin, Committee. Hiss Millard. We give the following sketch of Miss Wiliard and her work, by request f the Roseburg W. C. T. U. : Miss Francis E. Wiliard is of New England parentage, her parents being natives of Vermont. She is now Pres ident of the National Womar's Christ ian Temperance Union, and has held the position for nearly four yeai 3 past, having been unani mously re-elected at Louisville by dele gates from thirty Statss. She is a highly educated lady, a graduate of an ! Eastern college, and has studied in Pin- is and traveled extensively t'itou Lurope. After returning to the United States she Was President of the Woman's College at Evaruton (the leading suburb of Chicago), and editor of the Chicago Post,, having, taken charge of that paper on the death of her brother, 'who was its editor until his death. Miss Wiliard and her broth er's wife took editorial charge of the paper and displayed a high order of tal ent in its conduct. After retiring from editorial work she took the field as a lecturer in the temperance cause, and worked with Mr. Moody for a tiue in Gospel temperance work in the city of Boston. While engaged with Mr. Moody she met Miss Goidon, her effi cient secretary. Miss Gordon is a na tive of Massachusetts, the dans-lite" of a former treasurer of the American Missionary Board. Miss Willard's object in coming to California and Oregon is to strengthen the work already done and assist in every way in advancing Christian tem perance work. She also comes by the unanimous invitation of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, the Good Templars, and is heartily endorsed by all Protestant churches. Previous to starting on thi3 trip to the Paeific, she made a teur of the Southern States, audi received a perfect ovation frdm the j people of every town ind cityf ; Which she visited, and was entertained in the families of such people as Governor iquiLi,,ui ureuigia, me presidents oi :u c "i colleges, and persons of the highest so cial distinction. She advocates total abstinence for the individual and pro hibition for the State. ELDORADO SP.RINGS. Though in her senility, she is yet lively and pleasant. S. B. Hutson, whose death was re corded in your columns last week, had many friends on Day's Creek. May his congenial spirit rest in peace. Peter Ulam has received a present on his chin, that adds a wholesome ap pearance to his manly visage. Watch out "mine friend" for wood. Rev. Mr. Webb occupied the pulpit here last Sunday. John Stewart left our midst last Wednesday witn several thousand head of sheep. ; John leaves many friends in the Umpqua .valley, - who wish him unlimited success Alva Beals, a young man possessing many manly principles, left his home Jast week for tho railroad front where he will make the iron ring for Miller fc Co. His numerous friends wish him much success, and his "daisy" longs ftr his return. Th school room is mnch improved by the liberal donation of a new recitation bench by Alexandre Ron deau. Alt-x. is a young man possessed of a laudabie ambition, and will sue coed in life. "Wooleyville" seems to ba a popular resort for the youngsters on Suuday, as W. A. W. has a nice pic- tare gallery there. " Gunpowder Plot-" Word comes to U3 of an attempt n the part of some youths to blow up a score or mere of school childrefi in one of the rural districts. -The road hands had been using giant powder, near the school house, to clear the public road of obstructions and left a quantity of powder in a can on the works. Some three or four boys belangi ug to the school, perhaps more thoughtless than wicked, succeeded in putting a blast in the road where a large num ber of the little children had to pass in going to their home, and when school Was dismissed in the evening ran ahead ef the other scholars and lighted their fuse, intending an explosion when the children should arrive at the point of dange.-. Luckily for all concerned, he fuse failed to burn a? readily as ex pected, when the modern Guy Fawkes, the leader of the plot, seeing from his am bush the scholars pass in safety, re turned to see what had caused his fail- ure, when the blast exploded, tearing off a piece of the youth's cheek and nose. The pedagogue in charge learn ing of the attempt to injure the little children, ferreted out the plotters and administered to the young conspirators chastisement, which it is to be hoped will make them mors thoughtful for the safety of others.
