THE INDEPENDENT, SATURDAY, JUNE 2, 1883. OOOS BAY! Daily Oregenian May 30. Several days ago we had information that an important transfer of real es tate and other property at Coos Bay had been made, the supposition being that this transaction was the beginning of great operations of devslopraent. A dispatch published this morning con firms these suppositions and furnishes an outline of the plans of the purchaser, -who is the representative of eastern capital It is proposed to build a rail road connecting Coos Bay "with the Oregon and Calif ornia line, at Rose burg, 'and to use this as a basis for the development of great resources which, in the rough, have been secured by the eastern men. New ccal mines are to be opened ,and the capacity of others increased, new mills are to be built and old ones .enlarged, and a new line of steamers put oxi,' connecting Coos IU- -witLfiajv---FrRTicitM. - In -SttOrt, the industrial conditions ef the whole Ccoa bay region areata be revoiution : ized. "J T A consequence of . the connecting . Ifn of road between tha bay and the O. Si C. line will be to make the south west coast countrr practically a part of Oregon. Heretofore its only connec tion with this State has been judicial. Its. business and social relations have been almost wholly with California. And to California the connection has been highly profitable. : The six or sev n large mills on Coos bay have pro duced many millions of feet of lumber each year, all of which has gone to the San Francisco market, the product of a j large barrel factory has gone thcre and all of its agricultural and other pro ducts hav gone south. And, too, San Francisco has enjoyed the whole gen eral tiade of the bay, which has mounted to more than a million dol lars a year. . Construction of v the pro ' posed railroad will give the people of the bay the cheice of two markets, wit advantage of quicker communication with that of theii own State. Compe tition of Oregon on one hand and Cal ifornia on the other will naturally re- 1 suit in better prices for their products than they have heretofore received. There is not in the whole of Oregon A county richer in resources than Coos, wtuie it enjoys a variety not equaled by any other, unless, perhaps, it is it undeveloped neighbor on the norll Columbia. It has mountains of coal. great areas of timber, including some fine furniture woods, which grow no where else, fine itockand dairy ranges and much fine farming land. Even its isolation has not wholly prevented de Telopment of these resources, though ... ' little more than a beginning has been made. But population will pour in under the ntw conditions and Coos wil soon take rank with the rich counties of the State. The development of Coos county, a certain and immediate result of the proposed railroad, will furnish new ar gutuents for the Coos bar and Coquille river improvements now in haad by ine Government. The chief objection urged against these public works is that tha population to bo benefitted is small and that the commerce of these places is trifling. Both will grow fast enough , with the opportunities which quick rail connection will afford. And lvin outh of the Coquille river there, is a region which will become tributary to tue new road, There is no finer sheep range in the country than that of Cur ry county aJd just as soon as means of ahipmeat are a little easier its wool product wil! be enormous. Roseburg, which has just suffered a blight in the Joss of great share of its Southern Oregon trade,. due to the n ".yiviuciii, -a ULregon and California railroad, will, upon comple tlAtt rf 1 i . w v" vuia uav roau again enjoy the advantages of a termiuusr.'flnd if u HOODLTJMISM. : . i - .. . ... 5 C3 PILLS The heatheAuh name at the head of this article represents a class of human beings erroneously supposed to be pe culiar to America. In fact the " hab itat " of the genus is co-extensive with the habitable world. It is not dis tinctly designated by position, external appearance nor. sex, but may be spot ted, so to speak, by an absolute freedom from decency and good manners, or anything else that may chance to oc cupy a position between it and the en joyment of what appears to'its perverted imagination to be fun the aim and end of its being. If, perchance, the comfort and happiness of a fellow-being should be disturbed in the attain ment of this object, the object is ren dered !oubly desirable. The hoodlum 13 coarse, tulgar and unprincipled. He or she, as the casa may be, is a petty breaker of the law, a terror to the au thorities, a heaitburn to mothers, great grief to fathers, a betrayer of f i "ends, a base trad ucer of enemies, a disturber of the public peace and a very ugly blot, upen civilization. He or she may "ae conceived and brought forth in virtue, but the atmosphere necessary to produce the most perfect specimen is composed of ignorance! license and passion. His or Jier enjoyment re quires uneducated taste to appreciate, It may, perchance, survive until death, but the chances aro that after that it will be a very poor specimen of hood lum who will escape lieing certainly damned. The first and most important divis ion of the genus is into male and fe male. The male hoodlum would es cape observation in a crowd about as easily as a bear would in a band of rats. His voice cannot be restrained and ner vous persons are liable to tremblo when he roars. His activity overflows and fear takes possession of his neighbors. He is, at be3t, like the aligaUr gtod for his, own purposes but beyond that nobody pretends to know why he has not the foim as well as the manners of a brute. But the she hoodlum ! Being more diiiiculfc, when alone, to detect, is more revolting when she discovers herself, a3 she usually does, in bands of two or more. She also talks loud and walks much. She selects the most embarrass ing opportunities to perpetrate jokes and jests bordering upon and sometimes overstepping the vulgar line. She tends to lower the point of respect in which she is held. Sho demands the homage of men, whom she treats like pickpeckets. In fact she is everything which a lady is not, except as to her shape, and there is one class of unhap py, miserable women which would ma terially decrease if tho world could wake up some mornipg and know that there no longer existed such a thinjr as a female hoodlum. These remarks are pointed and true, Who'that reads cannot bring testimony from his own experience to establish their reracity I Fathers, teach your children early, that a man's comtort and happiness is as much his property as is his money, and the destroyer of one is as guilty of larceny as the stealer of the other. In ider to prevent oth. ers from instilling vicious lessens into j their minds, keep them at home and keep them busy. Bind them by . Jove and duty, and if neither will avail they are scarcely worth your trouble. Fourth of July OslabrationI archtnts aro enterprising they will jnak it an important center of supply. aiere is ctrtam to be a contest between jrortnna and San Francisco for the qqs 3ay trade. We shall have the .advantage of quicker and shorter com munication by rail, while the conditions of ocean traffic are about equal between th two cities. Relations of acquaint anc and credit will be in favor of San Francisco, but these advantages ere not invincible and we shall be sur prised if Portland does not gain a good lhare of the bay trade. The gpecial disadvantage which Coos bay has labored undr is non-resident ow&ership of her great industries.' All iho mills aro owned in San Francisco, find all but one of the coal mines. All tha profits of these industries have, of course, gone out of the country. Tnis is an evil net soon or easily corrected, but the development of agriculture and gtneral business will slowly and cer tainly work a revolution.
