The unfortunate Celestial objected at first to parting with his earnings, but when the man drew a pistol and shot him through the palm of the hand the ducats were promptly passed over. Lost oa Strayed,' Austin J Myers, a young attorney recently returned from Ann Arbor, Michigan,, left town unceremoniously one day last week, and has not been heard of. It is feared by his young lady friends that he haB gone to the woods and f allen a prey to panthers, benrs or t wolves, or been bitten by a fawn. The carpenters are leaving Myrtle Creek for the front since the comple tion of the railroad bridge over the South Umpqua at that place. Mr. McCargue and wife, of Waits burg, W. Revenue Agent was io- Roseburg this week making himself "fresh" around many of the business houses, but we believe he found everything straight We publish this week a new adver tisement of Sherman, Clay fr Co., agents for the Steavling organs and other musical instruments, to which we call the special attention of all who de sire purchasing an instrument. Our late County Treasurer, William Wright, has arrived with Dave West from Cole's valley. He says that the harvest is about over and that thresh ing will commence next week. He re ports crops fair in that portion of the county. Ambro3e Young, of Oakland, is in this city on business. He intends to rem?e to California this Fall, to re main permanently. We will miss you, Ambrose, but we feel confident yon will return to Oregon in a few years. In the meantime we whh you success. John Hailey, accompanied by Wm. Carll, road superintendent, will be in town to-day on their way to Cecs Bay for the purpose of placing the road in proper shape for carrying the mails, Mr. Hailey being the contractor there for. Such a line will be of immense benefit to this county as well as Coos. We have no doubt that a thorough examination of the route will satisfy the most tender capitalist that the enterprise will prove a profitable investment. Mr. McCain's team took fright at the Roseburg mill and had a lively run over the bridge . arid up Jackson street. When about the Metropolitan hotel, Wm. IJenney, with his charac teristic intrepidity rushed out and grasped the reins of one of the horses; but it was not until he was carried the full length of & block did he succeed in stepping the team. W have received by express from Washington a photograph of tbe brain and spinal column of Chas. J. Guiteau, the assassin, as it appeared after dissec tion by the surgeons. Crank sharps are invited to examine it at this office, and pay two dollars and fifty cents for sub scription to the Douglas Independent. Dr. Chas. H. Crane, wio was, in former days, a surgeon at Fort Lane in Jackson county, and who is favorably known by all the old settlers for his gallant conduct during the Indian war in that section, haa, we are pleased to learn, been confirmed as Surgeon Gen eral of the United States Army. FROMLE WISVILLE. Ed. Independent : Lewisville is situated in the big bend of Cow creek, and is within a half mile of the little tunnel. Mr. Lewis, the energetic pro prietor of the town, has donated to the railroad company a considerable quan tity of land,1 upon which a depot is to be established, and among other favors to be shown this place it is to be made an eating station. A surveyor will shortly commence laying out the town. Mr. Lewis now accommodates the hungry, both man and beast, and at the present time is doing an immense bus iness. (Two opposition express wagons run between this place and Myrtle Creek, alternating daily. The wagon road connecting the tunnels is now completed, and it is not now necessary to transport merchandise through the canyon to get it to the big tunnel. There are four saloens here, which are the centre of attraction on Saturday evenings and Sondays. The 'Big Tent " saloon seems to do the largesi share of business. Your former towns man, Joe. Lynch, is here conducting a restaurant and is -doing well. This seems to be a mineral - region, as the Chinese have discovered gold in consid erable ' quantities afid every evening -they may be seen out prospecting. LtwisviLLE, Aug. 1, 1882.. We are sorry to learn that our riends in Camraa valley are troubled with diptheria. They have no physician in their neighboi hood and ere twenty-five mile from Itosebuig. This malignant disease has destroyed tbelives f many children in other parts of the country. There are bow two pros pective roads leading to Dillardville and a third Is being talked of. A potoffloa is much needed et this station. Mr. Newton Richards, our accom mo. dating mail-carrier, makes his regu lar time, aud is ever prompt in his ardu. ous duties. Mail comes only once per week and the people want a tri-weekly route. Such a route would acconiroo dare a great many people and would be the most available one to the coast. There would do very little difficulty in making the trips during the Winter and Summer. Verbena. WILBUR ITEM Wilbur is extremely quiet during tbe Summer months, but we are self important enoguhi to believe ihat we are entitled to be represented in your val uable paper. , The busy click of machinery may be heard on all sides; and sometimes three or four machines may be seen busily engaged, harvesting a bountiful crop. The Umpqua Academy furnished aboili a half dozen teachers for the county, this year. Those who live here are Henrv Strange, Anna Cooper, arid Ida Booth. All of them have suc cessfully, taught a term of school and have returned home. . The Academy fence has been painted and now presents a better appearance. A well is now being dug for the school, which has long been needed. Mr. A. W. Strange is the proudest man in Wilbur. It is a son, weighs nine pounds and is a Democrat. A party consisting of Messrs. Booth, Benson, Alsin, and Chapman are recre ating in the mountains. They are try ing their luck at Nim rod's occupation. The party of visitors to tbe coast, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. J. L Chap man, Prof. F. W. Benson and brother, Mesdames John Aiken and John Hew itt, and Miss Anna Cooper, write that they are enjoying themselves finely, having killed deer, grouse, eta, which they had eaten, jnd were merry. SOUTH TEN MILE. Prof. J. M. Heard took charge of our school on last Monday He has made a good start and prouiiseB to give general satisfaction. Mr. John McGtfire and Miss Mary Leonard, both of th;s neighborhood, were married on the th irist., Rev. Father Heinrich officiating. Quite a number of the citizens of this locality are interested "in mines on Olalla, and I believe rt is the intention of all of them to work their claims the coming Winter. Our people are in the midst of har vest. Early :sown grain will yield pretty well, but late gram will fall far short of what the farmers had hoped for. The short crop was caused from the extended hot weather. Billy Wells has conceived an idea which, if carried out, may prove a splendid source ef revenue to him. He intends in a short time to purchase a portable steam engine, of about fifteen -horse power, to be used in running a threshing machine during the Summer, and in the Winter he is te have it to furnish the power for a small sawmill. Mr. Wells had intemded to procure the engine in time to thresh this season s crop by steam, but he informs us that he will now be unable to do so. Our new contractor fer the mail line from Roseburg to Redding, fear ing that tha Oregon boys engaged in driving were liable to accidents, em ployed one of their tried drivers from Idaho, who went to Yreka to superin tend the business. The mail being very heavy the new driver was mt in charge of a coach to carry jthe extra mail. Ihe new agent happened to be out in a dark aight without lamps and was compelled - to camp , put without even a coffec-fcot. Uncle BMy is one of the permanent institutions of the county, who not only supplies the cit'ir tens of Roseburg and Oak'and with fish but he catches trout for sportsmen,' with a net, and thus prevents inuumer-, able treut lies. The expense f travel to the fishery from Roseburg is trivial compared to the wear and tear of con science.
