THE INDEPENDENT. ROSRBTJRO. SATURDAY. JULY 15. "BRACE UP ! " The Democratic party contains a great number of peculiar voters. They apjear to be Detuoer&ts or to call themselves sucb, from the force of cir cumstances over which they have v.o control. Furthermore, from tl e bot- toraof their hearts tliey seeai 10 fed sorry for it. It is. their , great desire to 20 tbroujrh life as ruartvrs. Thev court defeat they wish defeat, and are only happy in the gloom and depths of a Waterloo! A victory to them ia soraethipg ; on which the Re publicans have secured a patent, or at least a lawful right from the time to which the memorv of nan runneth not to the contrary. But: how tht?y puff and blow before an i election I Huw they turn out to all the I'Graml Ral lies T'' Uow they sliouV throw high their hats in air, and carry teccbes, hir brass bands and bet two to one on glory hallelujah or another man, until a week before election. Then tley let go all holda. The settlevl rae'anchollv of defeat gathers onj all their brows. The gloomy 'words go outy "we're goiv,'' "let their, take it," S e ban't lieat them," and then they are happy ! Thoy accomplished what thfy lahoml for, gate the Republicans a big m-acu at first smT a bigger victory at last. Tliej chuckle in their sleeves at how they scared them, and pity the joor earnest orker in the vineyard of Dembcrcy who really thought that the eause of justice could triumph. From t year to year it is the baine old story From .the amount of wind expended. rom the bluffing and blowing, the 1 Mass bands' Hooting," and a gr ind old tiino I generally a month before election1 one would think that the woods were full f Democrats. Perhaps they are. They appear to be there ou election day at least they are !not at the polls. Let all this nonsense be stopped. Let our campaigns- be conducted on something besides wind and air, Let an election le something else than a ''.. . I grand jollification and a grander defeat. We are men enlisted in a noble cause. 1 : The solution of American independ ence and all we hoi uon the Democracy. dtar defends The Republican party is the grandest,! best 'organized and most corrupt organization on God's earth. It is grand bflcause it is led by the wealth and aristocracy' of the new worldj;. it vis the best organized because every petty office is used to keep it well disciplined, and it is the most corrupt because it is used as a -asi money-making machine by its leaders- It holds to no principle, it has no creed except victory, oilice and money. It has evolved no patriotic measure but what has been the means oi filching millions froni the treasury . It has accomplished no good but what was counterbalanced by corruption. With its vast anil thorough organiza tion its leaders' attempt to cover up and hide its rotteness. Bi t the millions robbod from the Navy,; more millions from the War department and the Interior, its miles-a-nd miles of land given to railroad corporations, its Credit Mobiler swinnle, its Black Friday, its Whiskey Frauds and its K'tar Route 'robberies- are tho mile Btones of its corrupt career. And the people that continue it in power have forgotten that "eternal vigilance is the .price of liberty." It is against thid great organiza tion, this ovei whelming corruption which will stoop to anything to con tinue in power and above all this leth- i rgy and seemingly neipiessness of the people, that the Democracy must con tend. And to contend successfully it must cease to be a mob. It must be an organization guided by the most advanoed thought and, the highest patriotism. It must lead as would public opinion. It must send the schoolmaster abroad. its press and orators must net pander iii the least to the vulgar tastes- of the pcpulac ; it must be all thin to become the great preserver of liberty and Civilization of the nineteenth century, The great questions of popular self-government .are yet to be solved. The old govern ments of Enrope must topplo and fall ;and whether in the general crash the American Republic goes clown and all is auarchy and ruin and desolation and despair, with gnashing of teeth, de pends tijoti the democracy. It can . gave all. It can build up by its in fluence and example, great govern ments for the good of the people all over iho world. It can save Amer ica and freodoin- ami become tho eonserver of liberty everywhere. . J t can do this or it can remain a rabble . and a mob without head or hope. And the languago of Hvibblij in apposition to an investigation of the political assessments levied by tin Republican Congressional Committee upon em play res of the Government', was unbf com ing a pot-house politician, and savored of a style of bulldozing never before attempted during even Grant's adminis tration. The members had the good sense and decency to have much of .the disgraceful colloipiy omitted from the record. The war cloud which has so long been gathering over the. Mediterranean hrs at last burst, and the British fleet has opened siege on Alexandria, Which is the nntin seaport of Egypt, and the second city in size in that country, ar.d contains a population cf dbout three hundred thousand people, it is situated on iho Mediterranean sea and well fortified, from its position .occupies an iinrortant; commercial position to the English government for this aggressive movement It is vry apparent that she means! the complete conquest of Mediterranean, and -unless opposed bv a combination of other European na tions sufficiently strong to compel the British Lion to sneak back to his lair, the land of The Pharaohs wIl be under English dictation and the commerce of the old world will be forced to pay tribute to I her coflrs. The friijnd. of . tempura.ica are cir dilating a; petition to our legishitnrw asking an amendment to the constitu tion piohibiting the manufacture, im portation or sale of Fpirituous Ihpiors for other tiian medical purposes within this State. These petitions are being extensively1 signed by people in all walks tf life, and time will f 11 whether onr Republican legislators from this county, who played- good Lord and good Devil with the' church and saloon during the campaign, will now have the stamina to define il.emselvt-s on this issue; or will they, like some of their predecessors, absent themselves when the vote is taken, or snC'er th bill to be smothered by less imjortaut measures. . -.'...' The press dispatches have informed us that the Senate Repuhb'.-un .-"J'-ns at Washington hay agreed to u'.ike amendments to the internal revKiiue bill which will reduce the taxes forty millions of pellai'g per annum, mostly on whisky and toJacco, while Ih con sumers of sugar ami cotton will have to pay the tax. i ......
