A Republican Victory I AXD A DEMOCRATIC FUNERAL; The End of a Great Party.: ! IFGaTTOTEl A Poor aiisgnided Girl ' Own Life. Takes Her A SAD LETTER I v ell, the election Is over! "Without doubt, we think, Garfield his been elected, and will be Inaugurated presi dent of these United States on the 4th of next March. The fight was a hard one, and the republicans should con gratulate themselves upon a well- earned victory. The existence of party depended upon the result; and by adhering to its idea la favor of a pro. teotlve tariff, the republican party succeeded In keeping In its favor every manufacturer In ths union and their influence was great enough to name the president. Now that the heat of battle has subsided, and we are permitted to look over the field wun care that cool second thought gives, we can say that the matter of tariff proved to be ths rock of Gibral- ter upon which the democratic shin dashed itself to pieces, and went down to the bottomless deep a total wreck. The democratio party had as good a man to represent it as the nation ever knew; it made its fight In his behalf with a vim that was.creditable to it; it did Its best- But the fact Is made ap parent that the New England man ufacturers were determined to protect themselves. That they were success ful is proven by GarUeld'a election. Garfield carries every northern State excepting perhaps Nevada and New Jersey. Hancock carried every south ern Sate. At this writing Caliornia is reported to be democratic; but we do not belive it to be Jbo. Oregon is republican from 300 to 500 and c a niiot fall below the figures we give. As to the county the republicans have It by about 103. Four years ago Hayes caried the county by 236, and William's majority was 295. A DIRTY WRETCH. Dr. L. E. V. Coon, Work. and His Dirty We herewith give an extract from a circular sent us by the Champions or Honor in Jackson county : And Whereas, we the delegates and ami members of Southern Grand Council of the Champions of Honor of tho State of Oregi.n, in this con vention assembled, are sufficiently convinced of the truthfulness of the charges made against Dr. L. E. V. Coon, made bolb in California and in Oregon, of his foully and indecently tampering with boys, and attempting to corrupt their morals, and da file them, aud of hia wilful drunken de bauch iu Jacksonville, thereby dis playing and manifesting a depraved and degraded disposition and habits; therefore, Resolved, That we heartily approve of the prompt action of our Grand Worthy Commander in revoking and annulling all authority of the said Dr. Own as grand lecturer and organir-lug officer of the champions of honor in Oregon, and also the revoca tion heretofore by tbe grand councils of C. of H. in California of aii hi au thority as such officer in said State for like reasons. In addition to the above we have it from themselves that Dr. Coon at tended to commit a personal dignity upon two young men In this town. Taking all the facts into consider ation we advise all our people eveiy where to look out for the man, and we would say to Dr. Coon that he had not better ever return to Roseburg. Had hebeen here Friday evening he certainly would have been roughly handled. "Ye sincerely hope our exchanges will pass him around. '.ad. Tt is supposed the killing was lone by Indians, and the double-mur der took place near Blackfon, in Idaho Cyrus was a fine young man, and evtry one in this cOjnty was his friend.) Universally is 1 his -shocking death (deplored, and everywhere we bear ; words in I sympathy with his bereaved parents. Every republican is smiling so broad that the disease takes even with tome of the democrats. We have no partic ular reference to our friend, Uncle John Gildersleeve; and yet the old gentle man says If he is not to be permitted ?V "smile" just now, he'll positively HiAi the business. He would have vot ed for1, Garfield just 9,000,000,000,000 times on Tuesday, if he hadn't thought the majority in the county would : have been too large and that he would have been caught at if Champions of Honor. MAY, .. . See. N. I.C. M. Co. We are just In receipt of two letters which we give below. We have made innnmrable inquiries to ascertain who are the poor girl's parents, and have failed in aocertaining anything satisfactory concerning her. We give the letters only with the hope that the oor girl's parents may learn what has been the sad ending of their darling. Certainly there must be some one to blame for the loss of the life of a woman, who was at least so good in heart, art to pray to her God in her last and dying moments; and let every parent think what the careless educa tion of a child may bring it to in tbe end. Her mother and her G'hI were the last thoughts of the poor girl who ended her own existence in this world; and in common charity, and in remembrance of Hm. who said "Let hi in who is guiltless cast the first stone," let us hope her God saved the unfortunate at the last moment. Here Is the first letter; Los Angles, Cal., Oct. 27th. ISfiO. Editor DoraLas Independent: A young girl died here the 20th Inst, ap pearing to be about fifteen or sixteen years of age. She was afflicted with the lung fever some time ago, and was thought to be convalescing; but. taking an overdose of arsenic, quickly extinguished her life. It is not known where she obtained the drug. She often expressed a desire of being dead, but nothing was thought about it until she was found dead in her room,'Her body was immediately claim ed by a woman claiming to be her aunt in Sau Francisco, aud was interred in that place. The woman bears the reputation of a woman of ill-repute, giving her name as Mrs. I. Greene, aud giving the name of the unfortu nate girl as Virginia Greene. I thought perhaps if she had any re lations in Douglas county they couM fl n;l out the particulars of her death through your column.", as she claimed to be from that place. I will enclose with this, the Bote found iu her' room after her death. The affair has not been made public yet, as her aunt re quested of tbe coroner. Respectfully, Clibe Denhakt, Of the Denhari House, Ims Angeles. This is the note spoken of in the letter : October lfnh, 18S0. Farewell, cold world ! My earthly troubles will soon be oyer; and may I be free from care and sorrow. My uined life is nothing tome. I hope God wilt forgive my rah act of taking my own life. May my poor mother never know why I pen these lines; and I wisli it to be kno vn that I have aken my own life with a sound mind. My last prayer is, that God will save me. Oh, God t My life I take uuto you who gave it. C. V. Usees. CA LA POO IA. Mrs. C. G. Derling has for the past few days been quite uuwell. Tramps are pulling in their appear ance. They go from house to house beg ging for food to eat. CM. Jackson, that unsofisticated youth, has returned to his home at reswell. Dick Ambro, of Youcalia, has a name sake in Calapooia. He is a good looking boy, anddou't you forget it. Some of our farmers tried fie plow ing business, last weeU, but the soil was not suflieieutly moist, and they abandoned it. Ben Slauning, accompanied by to brothers and sister, arrived here last Thursday from Texas. They, will remain in these parts this winter, and n the spring emigrate to Eastern Ort gon. a- Winking won't do, boys. All the time we give you credit for pluck, we admire the tate evinced, and tho se lection you made as an object of admi ration, but we cannot say that your iusk is ve ry good tince your charmer lived in the bouse of one who wanted, perhaps, .to hug her himself. It is with regret that we annouce that Mr. John T. Daniel and family, who departed from here a few weeks since for the Pelouse country, failed to navigate the Caiapooia mountains, the snow being too deep for navigation Mr. Daniel returned to the Willam ette valley and will winter there, and in the spring will resume bis journey for the Palouse country.
