SHALL WE HAVE NO ANSWER And yet we have no answer to that $2,000 reward offered by Judge Willia and Sol Abraham foresimilar decision to that made by Kelly and Pri-n in the Canyon road case. Can it be possible that Kelly and Prim propose letUng thia challenge Car proof of their honesty and the cor rectness of their opinions go by with out an answer T j Certainly judges of ability and aspiring Jupges at that would not allow such a challenge to go by, and fail to show that their de cisions wese justified by law and in aooofdanee with former deelsioris. Without an answer to this challenge, and without an attempt to take up ibis reward, and without proof that the decision was a just one, the people C Oregon must- eoncider that Kelly and Prim will make decisions contra ' ry to law, and will allow their owji ftereooal feelings to dictate their de crees,! . This" question of electing men to the supreme bench of the State Is a grave one that should be fully consid ered by every voter before be casts his ballot. In the election of the judge no wan who has the welfare of his coun try at heart, who hopes for the work tag out of the tow as laid down in the Statutes that Justice may done to all mankind, himself included, who prays foe nothing more thn an honest and noble judiciary, should for a n.oment be biased by political prejudices in fa vor of a party pet. The supreme edge must be honest or the liberties, tile and property of the people are in danger from dishonest decisions. The candidate for supreme Judge should be above suspicion, or every one who jnahave a just cause before the court sjnoet tremble when the day of trial Cpproaobea. Here it has been cbarg Cdagiljut Kelly and Prim that they ave made an unlawful and partial decision. A reward of $2,000 has been altered tbetn to produce a similar de cision 1a all English or American law books. They fail to do so, even though , the $2, (XX) Is equal to a year's salary as aupreme judge. That they do not take Ctte reward is proof tbat they never bad authority for the decision; for if they bad they certainly would in five m I notes turn to the page In the statute for the decision by which they were guided. Who can then but believe n felly and Prim guilty at charged ? They would be found so guilty before any oourt or jury In the United States They have, in fact, been condemned by every legal publication In the land and there is not a lawyer In Oregon,out aide of those who argued iu favor of the winning side In the case decided by Kelly and Prim, who will justify tiietn In the decisions made by them. These are the facts In the case, coupled with the Important fact tbat this Is the flr-t time In the history of Oregon that an? Judge's acts have been so flagrantly in conflict with the law and against jus tice as to csll forth public and general censure from the stump and through the presu. As to the press ef Oregon, . there are ouly nine newspaper that fa vor Kelly and Prim's election, aud they are of the violent partisan typo. Ou the other hand, there are twenty-live which condemu them in unnn-t.su red terms, and earnestly aic that the electors of the Stite will vole against the election of such men as judges. The Stan dard published an article, including a letter purporting to have been writ ten by 8oL Abraham to one O. M. Ollmore ; and this article and the letter were undoubtedly written in I!oeeburg. Though the Star might have taken the original before it ap peared in the Standard, and have bad it "Wet up" in type before the letter was sent from this town, it neverthe less has waited until the letter has been published in the Standard. That then may be no mistake, and in order that no one shall dare to say we have hid den anything in the matter, we givt the letter which it is said Sol. Abra ham lost and was found by the Fink ring : ROSEBUBQ, March 7th, 1880. D. M. Giumm, Esq. My dear si and friend : This being the third let ter 1 wrote you since you left inj House last Fall, and have since sent you papers, but no answer rrom you yet. I am Very anxious to bear from you, and whether you intend owning to the State Convention asadeligaie from Your county, if possible secure the deligation and comi in per ton, or send the Proxy to me in blank, if you could come your expense will all be fixed, 40. answer. Your truly, Sou ABHaBAK. It is not true tbat the above letter was ever written by Sol. Abraham to IX M. Gllmore, and we can safely pro nounce it to be a forgery in every sense of the term. In proof of this we are authorized by Sol. Abraham to say be will give u. u. utimore aouu in gold the moment that be will m ine affidavit that be has been Inside, his house or near enough to speak to Sol. Abraham within the past thiee years, or that Sol. Abraham has been inside the bouse of D. M. Gilmore, or bad conversation with the man within the time named ; and the Star and Stan dard can put this in their pipe ami smoke it. Those two papers mast be bard tip for political capital when they attempt and commit a forgery, and in order to injure the character of candidates attack the reputation of private iudi vlduala. Every man has a riicht to support for office whom be pleases, and no candidate is to be blamed because be is supported by every man or' any man. It is the candidate's right to receive the votes of all men, and for argument's sake let us for the tl me admit that Sol. Abraham did write the letter iu question, is U iot further proof that as a taxpayer, he was anx ious for the nomination of other men than Kelly and Prim lo the supreme bench, that be might be Mire to secure the eUcliou of honext, impartial and capable men to the supreme judge ship ? Abraham never wrote the lettei; and, as we have Mild be fore, it is too apparent that the Mar and Standard are driven to desperate deeds to work their freltish end and the personal alms of a corrupt ling wheu they will commit foi gery to publish a po itii-ai point ! This i cheap enough to permit all Douglas couuly etteuding the fair this year. ANOTHER FALSEHOOD. The Star of Friday morning Is par ticularly wild. It contains more false hoods than we ever before saw print ed in four pages of a newspaper. We have noticed and corrected several of them already, and now, for this week, we give it our parting shot. It says in one place, Sol. Abraham "went south with Jim Wright the other day." This is absolutely false- Jim. Wright went on the stage, and Sol Abraham in the buirgy of the stage conipan ; iu proof of which we refer to Mr. Fawcelt who drives the team hauling the buggy. More than this, Hol Abraham never spoke one word to James Wright duriug the trip south, and It is a fact easily proven (by dera ociate) that James V right and James F. Gmley passed up tiie cauyon and nack iu company. Yet, further, fol Abraham defies any man to say he ha ever opitosed tne re-election of V. P. Hogsn. and it is certain tbat his action iu the election of two years ago hi Hogau's favor ought satisfy the pub ic be is slid will be F. P. Hogau's rieiid. But the Star did not men all it said. It is the riug organ, and the ring will sacrlice Mr Hogau, Mr. -hfridan, Mr. Wright or any one else on the democratic ticket if Its mem bers thiuk by so doing they can secure votes for Kelly and Prim. Two years ago couuurleit liemocratie tickets came from the Star office to aid in the defeat of Mr. Hogan. Two years ago Fink and Uazley and their followers voted airalnxt r. Hogan. Two years ago. through the effort of tne ring,137 democratic votes were- ctst against Mr. Hogan; and yet the independents rallied to h s support and he was elec ted by the larxe u ajority of 265. And it would seem thtt the ring is again at work, and is aided by the Star. Just now aud on the eve of election j Fink and Uazley nave nine men at work in the canyon on the toll road, ostensibly to repair the road, but in reality to - have voles ready for the June election and their candidates for the supreme bench, Kelly and Prim. Every one of the men so employed will be thus voted on election day, and when they bave performed that service for their masters then the chances are nine lo one they will be discharged- With the Fink ri'ig, it is auj thing for votes, even io the swap ping off to the republicans ot the en tire county democratic ticket. Independent On Monday, the 17th day of May, I visited district No. 28. Miss. Flora Wells is teacher in this district Her enrollment 19, average attendance li. Miss Wells is energetic and takes quite an interest in advancing her pupils. The school room is not well furnished. The blackboard is not good and the pat rons fail to furnish suitable chalk. Patrous should see that the school rooms are well furnished. The patrons all speak favorably of Miss W., aud the school was very orderly. Saw several taxpayers in this district, and they all favored a six mill tax for school purposes. From district No. 28 I went to district No. 10. About noon I arrived at the residence of Mr. John Smith, a brother of P. B. Kmith. Johnnie is living on the farm of his father, who passed away to the spirit laud many years ago Richard Smith raised several children, the most of whom have settled in Douglas county. All of bis children have done well u life, and to-day are piomiueiit men of enterprise and society. There is no better man lhau John Smith. He had rather wrong himself than do an injury to a friend. Iu d strict No. 10 H. B. Hendricks, an old pupil, is the teacher. His enrollment 34, average 28. One blackboard, moderately good, no maps, nor charts. He has two ex cellent mottoes : '-Do right" aud "Be punctual." Hugh is a promising young man one who takes pride iu excelling in every thing be undertakes. Wuiie iu this district I slopped at the resi dence of Uncle John LoDg, a most noble veteran. ' He is one of the old est citizeus of Youcalla vailey , and has a reputation tor truth, and veracity that cannot be excelled in any coun try. 1 shall never forget tne kindness of himself ant his noble family. He liked the idea of a six mill lax tor schools. May he live many years ou bis magnificent ranch, and when called to pass to the other shore, may be receive a "crown that is incorrupti ble, and fadelh not away.' He Is an anient supporter of public schools. He and his venerable lather have paid out hundreds of dollars to ward the support of the di-trict srliool in their town. They are liberal, and othi rs should cooerate with t hem iu establishing a good graded school at Drains There 1 met my oM irieuil W. A Perkins, who is a school tecLrr by profession. A man always feels uroul of such friends as Mr. Perk i us. He Is a gentleman In every sense of the term. His sou, Willie, is now the editor aud proprietor of a weekly pa per putdisiied al Draius. Willie is a toriinr pupil of mine, audi predict for him a bright future. Success to you, Willie, and may your spicy little sheet rank among the foremost of Douglas county papers. From Drain I went to district Ni. 29, which in- clud.s Tiupot valley. Miss Abbie Butler, recently from California, has charge of the l inpot school. .She has 41 names registered, witti an average attendance of zi. I lie school room has good wooden desks, one blackboard, n. maps, charts nor mottoes. The chalk used reminded one of white clay, wuich school boys use to make into iiiar. li-s. Every district should furnish the teacher with school ciay on?. Miss Butler is a teacher of ex perience, aud is Well qualified for the arduous iltnies ol the school room.
