H. ONN, &b Chairman. G eo. W. Jones, secretary. KELLY, THE FRAUD. All know tbe history of Judge Kelly, the deoo.ocr.itlo candidate, who denies be bad knowledge of the dis patch sent (n cipher to New York to bribe an Oregon elector, even though be ad 'led tsf is to the dispatch asking "far yj.$slw to commit bribery; " fully endorse this, James K. Kelly.' There is something more for tbe peo tie of Oregon U understand before they can appreciate the entire truth ' -aa to Judge Kelly's honesty, bis freeness from wrotu. and his boasted claim of Incorruptibility. To have con victed Judge Kelly of an attempt t bribery, it was necessary to show that be did not know the contents of tbe dispatch which he "emloraed. and to prove that he knew that the State was. republican before the dis patch was seuc The congieaeioual committee did all within Its power to arrive at the truth; it went that far to establish In the minds of all that Kelly wa guilty, yet becau le it could not findoorrobrorative evldeuce to es tablish Kelly's knowledge of the con tents of tbe cypher dispatch, It per mitted Kelly to escape inipeachmeut. In this nutter we will p'ay the part of an Independent political IWwin, and supply the needed " missing :' 11 uk" for the public's enlightenment, i la tbe first place, Kelly did not do all bis work in tbe telegraphing line at prominent telegraphic offices. He was just then given to a mania for making discoveries of telegraphic offi ces in the country, eoLS.quently when tbe couKressional committee made a demand upon certain leading telegraphic depots, it never thought of reaching the country offices. But we have been there. We have found that jn the start Kelly was timid in his work in tbe bribery business. Ue went down on the train with J. H. N. Patrick, TUden's agent, aud at Al bany be telegraphed the following dispatch: Albany, Nor. 11, 1878. To Hon. WM M. uwvnn. New York: Oregon gave a republican majority of about oue thousand. (.Signed.) J as. K. Kelly. Owynu's answer to this was as fol lows : New York, Nov. 11, 1876 To Jas. K. Kelly . I have sup posed I bad reasou to rely uioq your State. I have private advices efforts being made to count us out. Spare no exertioni or expense iu looking after tbe State. I will Le reepoiietoie ana rely upon you. Answer at what hour you receive this to 'vie at Nw York Hotel. igued) M. M. uwYNN. In the meantime came other dis patches as reported In the Concess ional Kecord, and Kelly aud Patrick sent on adispatuh asking money to buy an Oregon elector. Ou Novem ber 27th Kelly traveled all tbe way to Uervais to there secure the follow Inic answer to his request for money for bribery. Kelly went in person, and the following dispatch waagiveu him, after receiving which he at once returned to Portland, in company with Patrick, who went to Oervaia with him J New Yobk, Nov. 27, 1876. To J. N. H. Patrick, in carb Jas. K. Kelly, Gervats, Or.: Secure your point ut all hazards. Conitnuuieate with ' me Immediately, iciving pros pects. (Signed) Davis. Could there be any thing more con vlnclog? Tbote who may doubt the genuineness of the dispatches need only call on us. The originals are yet to be seen. We publish them a week before the election eo that the oppo- eition may deny them and that we can prove the dispatches are genuine. And we would ask the people of Ore- '; gon to consider two things irrespec- live of party in connection wan this judicial election. The office of su preme Judge is hot a political office ; and as It is (he highest tribunal In tbe mate, certainly no one who would ee ttire party advantage through bribery should be Judge. Certainly It la not politics or political uoushierauons which should actuate fend guide us in this matter. : We should tninn mat the Judge should be aliove reproach, and unless he is, lu defense or our lives and our property, we should vote for his defeat. Wt defy a conlraihclxon as to the dispatcaes we tuts wee publish. . AS RELIABLE AS USUAL. The Plain dealer of last week at tempted to give some figures concern ing T. R. Klierid&n'a work as county clerk. The Plal ndealer'a article was lu every way incorrect, and Its state ments calculated to do injustice to an honest, capable and economical coun ty official. This paper bas always claimed for Mr. T. K. Sheridan that the county never had abetter clerk, and her we give the figures In proof as tliey appear on the county records. It will be remembered that the Plain dealer referred to Mr. L. L. Williams' work, and we compare Mr. Sheridan's work for two years with that gentle- man's, as follows : L. I WILLIAMS. ; As co. and circuit court clerk from July 1876 to July 1877 3,36I 21 From July 1877 to July l7d 8 31 01 Total. ..... 6,63 12 T B. BHEBIDAtrr- As co. and cirnuit court clerk from July 1878 to July 1879 $2,143 75 From July 1&79 to July lucU a,4do &) Total.... V.923 The above figures show the amount of fees received by Mr. Williams and Mr. Sheridan during their respective term of office, and by a glance at them It will be readily seen that Mr. Mteridan will nave received at the eud of his term just $1,090 19 less than did Mr. Williams. There can be no . doubt as i to the correct uess of these figures. Mr. Sher idan's fees as clerk for the late term of tbe circuit court have been counted up, and be bas made an esti mate of the fees he will receive until July fully equalling that of the lat quarter last year. ; As to Mr. Hberldan ever attempting a wrong while in office Is something no one ever believed, aud as the editor of the Ptatodealer knows, be was shown the truth and could have obtained the same figuris we now publish hud he not evidently in tended to do Mr. Sfceridaii injustice. But it is well enougti siuce tbe Plaiudealer can do Mr. Sheridan no harm, tie is the choice of tbe people of tuia county by a large majority, and be will be re-elected as certain as elec tion day comes about aud he lives to see it. tie has done his duty by the people, aud they will vote for him not because be la a democrat, or an iu ilepeljdeut, but for the reason that or the lat two years he has worked faithfully aud honestly and made tbe j best county clerk the county ever bad, WHO ARE THE TAXPAYERS. It bas been asserted in different parts ol tbe couuty that A. Riddle aud J. U. Dillard, candidates for the offices of county commissioners, are not ouly farmers, but the heaviest taxpayers . It, moreover, seems to be the purpose of tbe ring not only to Bay all that Is poiwlble in this direc tion, but to. make it appear that Messrs. Cook and Applegatn are not farmers or taxpayers. The charge tbat Messrs. Applegate aud Cook are not furaiers is answered by the statement that all they possess iu the way of property has been made by fanning. aud by that alone; and tbe records show ttey must be suco ssfui farmers. I be tac iUt in the bands of the sher iff show that the various candidates for couuty commissioners nay proper ty tax as follows : Perry Cook $20 16 U. r. Applegate. . 67 i A.Kidale 1 16 J. M. Dillard ...Nothing With the above showing it is to he wondered at that the opposition to Cook aud Applegate would make the state menu above referred to. It is not to be wondered at, however, that the inde pendents throughout the couuty are giving Messrs. Cook and App.'egate a hearty support They look at it in the way tbat tbe men who are taxpayers them-elvc-s will have a personal iuter est lu keeping down the rale of taxa tion. RUNNING A II HAD. Reports received from different parts of the Bute are to the eflVct that M. C. George is leading in the race for Congress, and we cauuot but think his majority in the State will be at least l.UOOover Whiteaker. M. C. George is a man of ability. His reputation In private life is tbat of a strictly honor able man. In "Old Linn," the demo cratic a ronghold in Oregon, where Mr. George grew to manhood, it is thought be will run Whiteaker a very close race, a fact in argument for bis bearty support elsehert. Whiteaker, ou the other baud bas not attempted a defeuse of the ' bribe he received ia the lock and dam swindle. ' Ilia friends have not tried to offer an ex cuse for bis action with this regard. When this is no louger doubted aud it is reoieinbered that Whiteaker never secured the passage of a bill of bis orrn through the State legislature or during the time he bas been iu congress through that body, no one in tbe mate who has tbe welfare of Ore gon at heart can j but earnestly hope for Mr. George's success. FROM MR. H1NKLK. Tbe following letter from Mr. Rob- ert Hiukle explains itself : Rosed org, May 22, 1880. Ed. 'koepkndent : The article in the eitar stating that the money lost by theruutiingaway of the muleiu charge of Marks Abraham waa found in my house is a deliberate and intentional falsehood. Not one cent of tbe money was ever found in my bouse, aud the fellow who wrote the ar icle knew this when her-.d.e it. The edit-r of tbe Western Star knows tbat I am telling the truth, and if he were a man of honor he would never written what he did. liespecllully. i Robert Hubxe. 5 The cut-throats of Kalonira who made a fortune Aut of the capture of Colonel 8ynge, the Britiah officer, are now getting their deserts. Fifty brig ands were kitted reeently, and the remainder it, the band captured. Adi.-patch states tha the American newspaper representative offerc-d Bis mark $I3ii.0tJ0 a year for one weekly article from hit pen, aud thut the offer was declined.. Great is the scianra of advertising, THAT MOLE A"iD THE TRUTH. Were it not that it is a duty with us to show the public the truth, we would never refer . to the running away of, as stated by tbe Star, "Sol Abraham's mute." In the first plat the mule question amounts to noth ing, since by the running; away of the tbe mule, and loss of the gold dust weighed In this city by responsible parties who aided in packing the same on tbe mule's back. Injured no one but Sol Abraham, and all his cred itors were paid" the full amount o their bills, and Sol. Abraham is to day so far responsible financially to say if be owes a dollar he will pay tbe same on the presentation of the bill. But the point Is, tbe Star has brought this mule questlou into politics, and it seeks to answer all charges against Prim and Kelly by refering to the mule in question, and by stating that the tnule ran away from Sol Abra hatu, an assertion in direct contradic tion with tbe truth, and unmindful of the maxim : "Let truth prevail though tbe heavens fail" a good mot toe for any one, not excepting the editor of the Star. The truth is: Tub MULE NEVER BAN AWAY FROM SOL Abuaham ! The following letter is from a lite-long democrat, and one whom every one lu tbe county is well acquainted with : L Rosbbdro, May 22, 1830, - En. Independent : I have been asked tbe questlou who did own the mule tuat run away as olteu cuargeu to Hoi. Abraham? 1 here say mat Mark Abraham had the mule in charge ou the Calapooia mountains, aud 81. Abraham was In Roseburg at the time. J. M AurisotoN In addition to the above E. M. Moore will testify that Sol Abraham hired of him a horse to ride to tbe scene of the accident when the neas of the runaway was brought to this pluce. and sucn gentlemen as J. C. Fined, W. F. Owens, Dr. Hamilton, and others, if questioned, will currobborute Mr, Arrlngtou's statetneut. We would have stated the facts be fore but we had a curiosity to sen how far the Western Star would go in its misstatements concerning "that mule,'' and a desire that the people of this county might learn what an un reliable aud unscrupulous newspaper it Is. -. THE RIGHT MAN. A letter received from Mr. L. I). Montgomery, one of the independent candidates for the legislature, contains he following paragrah, which we consider worthy of Bpace in these columns: Thanking you for the kind notice you nave given me aa a candidate lor the office of representative, I desire to say, if elected, I shall to the best of my ability, faithfully aud impartially represent, me jripieui isouguts coun ty iu the Slate legislature. 1 am a republican, and have been since tbe Organization of the party in 1856. I regard Hie duties of a legislator to be to prevent profligacy aud extravagance, husband resources, encourage and protect improvements and the devel opment of natural resources, protect ing tne weaic against tbe encroach ment of theetroug, and promote the welfare of all. Mr. Montgomery would not have been endorsed by the independents bad they not thought him to bo an upright, houest aud capable geutle meu, and that be will be elected no one doubts. . . HON. JOHN C. DRAIN. This gentleman Is gaining in. popu larity as election approaches. We are confident that the Independent Cen tral Committee to k up the right man iu the tersou of Mr. Draiu.aml if he is not elected, we will sadly miss our guess. KEW TO-DAY. TO A LI FAR HE lt!
