R.-'o., and party, came up from Portland last iJondty by spuciil traiu. We are informed that J. M. Bower, formerly of this plaee, will be present at the circuit court held here in May. The OJd . Fellows' picnic to-day at Myrtle creek, promise to be a first class affair. It is under good manage ment. General Lane, democratic candidate for State senator, will speak at Myrtle creek, May 7th, and at Canyonville, May 8th. Mr. Geo. Flette, one of our boy, ho has been attending the medical college at Portland, returned to this city Mooday. Everywhere the Independents are working .ike beavers. Take courage, all who; are falut-hearted, aud keep the ball rolling. The medical fraternity have perma nently organ l.g.d a county medical as sociation. Meetings are held in this city ouce a month, ! It is a fact not generally known that the DocotAs Is dependent was the first newspaper in the State to men tion M. C. George's name in connec tion with the uominaiion for congress. There will be preaching, morning and evening, in the Methodist Episcopal church south, by Rev. Howard iu the morning, aud Kev. Bell in the even ing. Subjects of espe.dal interest are to be presented. A call has been issued for a meeting of the republican State central com mittee to be held iu Portland May 13th, to nominate a candidate for the office of .-tate printer, made vucaut by the death of V. B. t'urli r. Among the graduates of the medical department of the Willamette Uni versity,' we notice the name of L. A. Kent, of this county. The young M. I), has many warm friends in llose burg, j Next week we will review the pub lic acts of several of the independent candidates. We bad proposed doing so this week; but mora time is nece; sary in the arrangement of the ma terial on baud than we cau now spare. ' ! j - Our old friend Mi Josephson, wears a smiling countenance. Why dont therepuuUcans nominate Mr. Turner, of the Jacksonville Sen tinel, for State PriuCer? He is a man of ability, the best republican editor In Southern Oregon, an is generally known as a man of honor. He would make a strong race. The taxpayers of this school district met at the academy hist Saturday, and made a levy of four and a quarter mills for repairing and improving the school building. The contract for making such improvement w.-ts awar ded to Messrs. Palmer aud riecord. The general remark throughout lite county is that it is best to keep the right man iu the right place, when it comes to voting for men for public office.! Everyone making the remark in our bearing must have teeu think ing of Billy- Wright, our present couuty treasurer. Ah Lee's greatest fear, before his execution, was that his body after his death would find itself in the medical college. To prevent such a pos-ibllity a number of Chinese have stood gnaid over his grave since his burial, and in tend to be on the watch for several days yet. The inference of the Star to the effect that the chairman of the independent centre! oornmitte alone endorsed the Indeiiendent ticket, and that there were sevetal members of the commit tee absent, will cause every independ ent iii thecounty tosmiie at that news paper's efforts to carry its points by such glaring misrepresjntatious of the truth. Last Friday evening, at the dance in Ten Mile, a difficulty took place be tween John Irwin aud Will Smith, during which Smith had a part of his upper lip bitten off". A warrant for ihe'arrest of Irwin on charge of mayhem was issued aud , he was brought before Justice Hursh. Tues day the case c:iQe up for trial, and af ter luanng the evidence, the justice dlocbared the defendant. The last act in an appalling tragedy took lace at U ills' station, on the railroad south of E tst Portland about five utiles. Lawrence Lit ml in ha been living with his wife for fourteen years and had five1 children, the eldest Of which is 13 years of age A slior lnee niitce the affections' of his wife were ailienated from him by a man living near by. ' Lundin's wife left, fo; Han Francisco ou the outgoing steam er. ; Tuesday Lutidin was found in welt near iis house, with his lit tl baby. Lundiu was dead, but the baby was alive though badly chilled. Th coroner's J jry held the deceased came to bis tleatii by suicide. What must ba the depralty of a mother who de- ert-dier home and children I Let all men tell the truth. There is one thing certain, General Joseph Lane will tell nothing but the truth. Though be Is not the endorsed candi date of the independents, and though it Is true this paper d ies not support him as its candidate for State Senator, In the interest of truth, in behalf of truth and and seeking only to cup port the right, we roust give him the credit of being an liouorai.de man, aud a man who to day boldly declares: "I will tell the truth if I do not receive a single vote in tiis county."' The Ve.-Uru Starof Frid.iy uioriii..g staled that Prim, iu answer to the honorable gentlemen and democrats of ability who udiires'sed him a letter asking him to authorize them to deny in his behalf the charge mtde in the affidavit of W. Card well, Martha Tiu dull ana Delila Pool, guve those geutle meu a right to deny the charge. Immediately upon seeing the ar ticle in the Western Siar entitled 'The ; First Campaign Lie," we ad dressed an te to Uen.L-iu, asking him to cay whether or not Prim had ever authorized him to publicly say the charge made was false. In that note the editor of this paper said: "In the interest of truth, I ask you if Judge Prim ever authorized you to publicly deny the charge." Here is G-jii. Lane's answer: Rosebuhg, April 30, 1SS0 John VV. Kelly. Esq. Sir : Your note of this moriiitiir has been receiv ed. After untieing briefly a Minn ! article in the Western Star, on Uie subject of the Prim letter, I find the tallowing snort sentence : "In t lie in- i lerest of truth, I ask you if Judge' Prim ever authorized you to u -lii-7y deny the charge." I have not Jti.lire nliu s letter oetyra me, consequently write from memory, and my memo ry is thai Prim did not authorize me to publish his letter, or to make any public denial ; nor do I know 111 it lie supp led it necessary ho to do. On the 24in inst. I wrote to Judge I'ritti tnll him fully of my recollections of the contents of his answer. The aim in that cut-e, and iu this, is to tell i lie truth, and uotning but the truth ; and that 1 Hill do if the heavens fall Memory alone may beat lau.t, truth cannot; ami so far as I am concerned, shall prevail. I am tired of the Prim case. 1 sincerely hone 1 will not again have occasion to be called upon. Joseph Lane. Let the Star say wlnt it miy, no one In Douglas county will take its statements in preference to tliosj ol tten. Lane, and let us als i say to that paper that if it proposes to win votes in the present contest for its candi dates It mut do so by honest, fair work, aud not by stories so easily proven untrue, and by the bent authority. As we have written in another ar. ticl . not one of ih'8' democrats wrote to Prim actuated by any oilier fee iug than that of friendship for the man, as judge, whose reputation ji in ques tion, aud they only atoned tlia Judge Prim should give the n the right to say tiie charge was a lie and a slander. They did not ask a single favor for any man; they begged only f.r the right to prove their friendship for oae whom they ha I always honored as a man, for one whom iliey had always r. gmled as an upright jnd.-e, aud fir one whom they had always voted, when they had tiie. opportunity, mid that man did not give them permission lo meet those face to face who had charged him with a crime, and had made affidavit to the fact that the Company (Fink 4 Giizley- Guzley in person) It. id said he Prim had promised a de cision in that company's favor through Judge Hauua! it matters not what Gaz'ey said iu denial of his wu statements. It does not argue oue single point tl.at Sol. Abraham is charged with showing a letter to D. J. McKiuuou. Gazley's own iuterests would compel liim to deny the charge ; he wou.d naturally do that, and he has cieek euongh to think, uotwilhstaudiiig bis unenvia ble rt-putatiou, that n tcortl is of great er weight than the sworn testimony of tlirci other people. And Sol Abraham denies t iat ha ever showed J. D. M.C- Kiniiou any. oihir fetter than that which the Oregouiau contained. The only point to be considered, is Prim guilty? The affidavit charged h in with being so, and Prim has refused to allow a pu:dic denial of the charge. Ti.ai is ail theie is of it. 'ihe people want omy honest judges In o.lice. 'lliat is all this paper is contending lor. Prove to us at any lime that a t-iftgie candidate for a judicial odice is uislionest on the hide peudeul ticket and we will pledge uot only this pautr to joiu in the hue aud cry raise! ag.tin-t him, but we will pledge ttie vote of every in dependent In tliis county against that man knowing as we do that every ind. peud jnt is an honest mau. We are independent. VV'e are r-upport- ng men for otti.e on principle, and icause we hei.eve theiu to be both meal aud capahie. We are not unoortln any tmriy to keep a party record o er, . ami we op- se lb" election l' Judge Prim for no other re muu personal or private than that we do not believe lie is a lit man to lie elevated to the diguilied pi-siiiou .of one of the supreme judges of Oregon. ; Put that In your pipe aud smoke it Mr. Western Star.
