Last Friday evening, at the dance in
Ten Mile, a difficulty took place be
tween John Irwin aud Will Smith,
during which Smith had a part of
his upper lip bitten off". A warrant
for ihe'arrest of Irwin on charge of
mayhem was issued aud , he was
brought before Justice Hursh. Tues
day the case c:iQe up for trial, and af
ter luanng the evidence, the justice
dlocbared the defendant.
The last act in an appalling tragedy

interest of truth, I ask you if Judge
Prim ever authorized you to publicly
deny the charge."

visit this year, was to the schools In
district No. 1. This district includes
the old aud new towns of Oakland,
The old town school room is about
one-fourth of a mile from the O. A C.
K H. Prof. E G. White is teacher of
this school. He came from the State
of Wisconsin and lias taugnt four
quarters. His school room is a spa
cious building. Two eond blackboards
are placed upon the wa'U. He has 110
patented desks, no maps, nor charts
nor any mottoes. His school room is
very neat. His enrollment i forty
five. Mr. While has an excellent
school aud the pupi's seem to lie ad
vancing rapidly under hts manage
ment. When culled to reciiutioii his
classes came very methodically and
returned to their seats in a similar
manner. The moral tone of Prof.
bile's school is very good. He not
only instructs his pupils during the
scholastic days but goesevery u-day
