Whebkab. the Douolas Independent, newspaper published In Roseburg, baa Iwn published in this county tor the period of three years ; sou Wherkar, said newspaper it now well established, and d urine a three year' trial It bas faithfully served tbe Interests of the jiroducer and tax-payer; therefore be it Jtoolied, We, the members of the limp- qua Orange No. 28. Uu (rive TDK DOUGLAS iSPEFKKDKKTour onqualihed endowment, and would recommend it as a newspaper worthy the patronage of every farmer and tai-payerln Southern Oregon. . Oho. W. Jokes, Master. J. P. Duncan, Secretary. THE OLD FIGHT. In county matters the next year tbe fight against the old ring in Douglas county will be renewed. Knowing this to bo true Inde pendents a ust t once prepsro tor ... the fight. Injudicial and county matters there can be nothing urged in a man's favor by his le ing a Demon-at or a Republican ; the point is, wo mubt elect the best roan. In national affairs it is dltierent. utter county and dis trict affairs are attended to the work at homo is ascomplished, and thereafter the sjood citizen will look out for his choice for Congressman and President and vote straight lor Doth. It is a pity that the State at large is not as independent of party as South era Oregon. Were, it eo the duty ot Independents would be to look fitter the interests of the entire State, and by harmonious and Lonet-t voting ncd the election of houest men give to the people of Oregon tour years ot just and economical government. Per haps the time will come for such a struggle ad a Sate canvass amounts to, and when it does every tax-payer in the State . should be willing to try four years of J5ta'e goveroment conducted by bonnet old farmers. The avi erage politician would claim that the farmer cur. not make the Gov ernor or Secretary of State and Treasury; but in Oregon there are ec' mated turmers, aud take the farmers jrenerallv and it will be fouud that they belong to the class which studies more than reaus arm wmcn nnus its princi ples from experience aud in es tablished trutiis. Perhaps not one ot the number sneered at by thf rascally politician but has a charer conscience and better ap preciation ot right, and it .8 cer tain no farmergovcrnor would have that disreputable education which leads the politician to seek the position of chief executive of Estate that ho niaVj use the power obtained through it to send him self into the United States Senate. Oregon has tried politicians in the office fiumcd since tbe Slate was iirst organized. We doubt it therein a single instance to be pointed to in the history of the State. Where the political governs or the man elected on a straight party ticket has not attempted to use his office and its patronage as ateptnng-8tor.es to a futter place in the United States Senate. The test may be applied vrithout fear ' from the time of the first govern or, and it will not fa il when it comes down ' to the last aud per haps the present Democratic ad ministration ot State affairs. This time if the candidate's name is not 1 Layer it will be Bush, and there is no difference between the two, since it is generally regarded the office is. held in partnership between them. We have u't heard anything from the. Jacksonville Times la'.e ly in abuse of the Independent party of Southern Oregon and this paper. It is high time for that paper to enter once more a feeble protest against a proposi tion to deprive its political mas ters ot their fat places and put . better men in their places. ' There will be (we inform the Times iu advance) a number more emphatic letters published like that one written by that sterling Independ ent and iarhtul supporter of the cause o'l the people, Green B. Smith, and that paper's silence will be increased it not before the election certainly afterwards. After the election the Times will haye proof that.the day bas gone by when politicians can drive people to the polls like sheep to the shearing iu Southern Oregon. Hon. J . s. Palmer, Senator from Benton county, died at Cor valha Sunday afternoon. During Saturday night he was taken sick, and early Suudiiv morning became unconscious-and so remained up to the time ot his death. lie died of heart disease. ' AN ADDITIONAL DISGRACE. The Portland : Standard, 'aa ft measure, justifies the attempted assassination ot Dr. Kalloch by Do Young on the ground that no honorable man could possibly have done otherwise than did the latter after Kalloch's attack upon his family. The Standard should remember that in De Young's con duct there was nothing hon orable. He commenced the at tack upon Kallocb, and attacked his private reputation in a man ner that was shameful, as admit ted by M. II. De Young, and des cided after the brothers found that they were doing that which was not honorable not to retract the charges made. And in the shooting what is there in the name of manhood in the man who will deliberately decoy an other to his death iu a manner that leaves the one assaulted not one single chance lor delence ? Had De Young faced Kalloch in the open street, and fought him equally there would be less fault" finding ; but this he did not do, and played the part of the assas sin who complains of injury that be has provoked and with a he in his mouth attempts a cow ardly murder. Were he a man he would have met Kalloch lace to face. lie was an assassin, and for all such the true man, the man that God intended, can have no sympathy. The sympathy of the bravo and the good must necessa rily go with Kallocb, though he is not blamless, and though it is true he gave an insult no man would have allowed to go unre- sented, and yet which was griev ously provoked. The mau who fights for the good name of his family fights in a holy cause so long as he fight as a man should fight, openly giving no advan tage and taking none ; bi t when the fight is made like the one in question, cowardly aud under cov er, then there remains the addi tional disgrace upon the family concerned in the proof furnished that it contains a dishonorable member. No mother coula glory in the thought that Chas. De Youne was her son. No sister would ask such a cowardly viudi cation of her good name. A mother or sister would expect of a sou or brothei that feeling which prompts a man to protect those whom he loves with a sbot-erun loaded with buckshot, if necessary, and the satisfaction that the tra ducer ot his mother and sister is looked in the lace when hs avenges the insult upon their good names and reputations. THE CANYON ROAD CASE. We neglected last week to speak f the decision in the Can yon road case by the State Su preme Court, for tbe reason tbe decision was not received uutil after our paper was put to press. Ihe decision did not allow the damages prayed for by Fink and Gazley, but gives theui possess sion of the Canyon road. This decision does not end tbe contest for the road on the part of Willis and Abraham, however. They do not propose to give to others what justly belongs to themselves simply because a pri vate lawsuit has been made a po litical one. The history of the Canyon road case is well known to every citizen in the county. Once the Supreme Court, decided it belonged to them, and several times has the case been decided in their favor by the Circuit and County Courts. Judge Watson's lust decision told the truth in the premises when it declared Fink aud Gazley never had a right to the road, ntid' were tresspassers upon other people's property, and Judge Boise, in the Supreme Court, very clearly this last time spoke iu the same strain and in behalf of law and justice. With these tacts known geuerally it will be hoped when Willis and Abra ham again go into the coutest, they will win back what bas been uq justly taken from them. - LET US HAVE TAX-PAl EBS. Lookixg Glass, Aug. 10, 1879. Editor Iddepes dent : I have been a careful reader ot your pa per tor several years, and I like its Independent ideas. As a tax-payer I would suggest that you tavor hereafter the elec tion of only cax-payers to the of fices of Judge and County' Com missioners. Put a tax payer in these offices and yoa will put men there who will have an interest in keepiug down taxation, and such, men, while working for their own interests, will: also necessarily be working for the interests of every tax-payer in the county. ' . ,In, county matters, it should not be with the people whether a candidate is a Democrat or a Re publican, but rather that the can didate chosen lor election b) the people shall be capable and hon est, and have an interest in cut ting down taxation. Very respectfully yours, : David Grenot. .Nothing is lost in Fiance. The orange blossoms and grass in the public gardens of Paris are! sold to the highest bidder, and at a country railroad station a visitor lately saw a sale of grass on the embankment. The purchasers were peasants' wives. COWARDLY ASSASSINATION. . The shooting of Dr. Kalloch by Cha3. De Young c iunot be too severely . condemned. The act was cowardly in tlii extreme, and the demands of justice cannot be complied with should Kalloch die unlesB De Young's neck is stretched. The only ' power adequate to the occasion and capaole of doing justice in the premises is Judge Lynch, though the thoughtful mmd would op pose Bnch extreme measures, yet it is doubtful if there, is one out side of De You tie's relatives and immediate friends who would to day experienceone single teeling of regret had the mob immediately after the shooting and at the time of the overthrowing of the carriage seized the assassin and bong him to the first lamp post There can be no excuse offered for the man who will call upon another, ard then under cover will attempt murder. It is undoubtedly better that the mob did not seek vengeance after De Young was placed in jail. Had tbe attempt been made it is impossible to say where the riot would have ended or the amount ot damage twenty thous and infuriated men would have accomplished. To Dennis Keat ney the credit is due lor holding the workingmen in check, and never before in the history ot that remarkable man did he show his power ot command and his great force ol character to a better ad vautage than at the sand lots this last time in controlling the work ingmen and sending them to their homes in peace aud quietness. Kearney was one man against twenty thousand, but he was man enough tor them all. CIICRCH ANDCIIINESE. At the annual conference of the M. E. Church held in Portland this week, tho following resolus tion was ottered by Rev. J. F, Devoro. i I Jtetolefd. 'that we will warmly invite ihe Chinese into our own conirreirations, churches and (Sunday Schools, and make special efforts to Americanize these immi grants to our shores. We recommend that the doors of our academies and col leges be kept open to thiui as to other nai tionauties. Atter this Kearney will be needed in Portland, He is wanted to tell Mr. Devore and his brother ministers that before the Chinese are looked after the moral educa- tion of the Americans should be attended to. The number of criminals in the penitentiary aud the frequent occurrence of crime would argue that there is much to be done toward reforming those at home betor an attempt is made to improve the condition of those from abroad. And it seems to us that the conference should have given the preference to Americans rather than the Chinese, and re solved to expeud its labors and raouey for the elevat.on of our own people instead ot providing tor the manufacture of voters ou of the rice eating, opium-smoking and'American-hating Mongolians. The letter published elsewhere from Mr. David Greuot is sensible and to the point. Time has proven that where Belf-intcrest makes a patriot the patriot is linn in his faith and faithful in his work in promoting the reltare ot the public lie has then a com mon interest with the people, and to do injury to what concerns them is to injure, himself. - - Some vigorous articles have re cently appeared in the London Times on the condition of the British army. The conclusion is reached that in point ot numbers, efficiency and discipline the army is m a bad way. It apptars that in tl.e five battalions which were sent to South Africa there were 623 men who had never fired a ball cartridge. Their musketry drill had to be learned under an enem v's fire. The. solid residue contains large amount of tannin, derived from storing in oaken casks, which imparts to fine old whisky one of its valuable individual qualities. The amount of residue proves the whisky to be free from the excessive coloring and sweet ening so penerally ued in adultcinting. In fact, in two words, it is the PUHEST WHISKY, and will not only supply apul lie want, now that whiskies are so" gener ally adulterated, but will be of the greatest value to the physician in those numerous cases in which pure whiskies are the inoi-t u-eful ot all medicines.
