Mack has issued an interesting program for the event, the day sessions being being held in the public school buildings and the evening lectures at the Methodist church. Among the prominent instruc tors who will take a leading part in the institute are Superintend ent of Public Instruction J. H. Ackerman, Prof. R. G. Boone, of Los Angeles, Cal. ; R. P. Robin son, School Superintendent of Multnomah county; H. M. Shaf er, President Ashland Normal School; Cornelia Marvin, Secre tary Oregon Library Commission, and Mamie Fulkerson, Marsraret B. Fowells and Lillian McVicker, teachers in the Corvallis. city schools. All friends of education are cordially invited to attend the sessions and especially the eve ning lectures- Subscribe for the Gazette. "If the duty on timber is tak en off. in response to the de- mands of some Eastern theorists, the timber industry of the North west will be paralyzed and every mill and logging camp will be shut down," said W. G. Howell; a timberland owner of Portland, in a recent interview. "The $2 a thousand duty rep resents the profits on its manu facture, and it can be easily seen that men are not going to manu facture lumber without some profit. Should the $2 be taken off, Canadian lumber will swamp the markets of the East, and, as there will be none shipped from the United States to foreign countries, the woods of Oregon and Washington will be given over to solitude, as they were before the advent of the whites into Oregon. ' That there is danger, of lum ber being placed on the free list is evident from the .sentiment among the Eastern consumers who are demanding legislation on the tariff, at the next session of Congress. It therefore be hooves every manufacturer of lumber and every owner of a'log ging camp in the Northwest to be on the alert to avert the ca lamity threatened. "Of course we. all want the tariff revised, but non6 of us want our particular material to be affected. I am not in favor of removing the tariff from any article which, if placed on the free list, will tend to close down our factories or reduce the wages of our workers. I am even will ing to pay 50 cents a sack on sugar, that the trust demands, rather than have the industry injured, even if we should be at the mercy of a trust." " ; i year we are especially strong on the varieties popular with western orchardists such as apple (chiefly the unexcelled 1 year). Peach, Pear, Cherry, Apricot, Plum, Small Fruits, etc , and we want your or der whether for one Stark Tree or one million. Write for our Stark Fruit Book. Stark Delicious 'Apple is a wondrous success, and Solely on its genuine merit is the' most talked of apple today . This is what one of the . greatest commision houses in the country says of it: "Last year we secured one carload of Del icious from Washington and placed them in small lots in Chicago and large Eastern cities at 40 per cent more in price than oth er varieties we handled at that time. Who ever had them last year, have repeatedly asked for them this year before our supply arrived. This year we are selling Delicious at 50 per cent more than Jonathan, Grimes Golden, Rome Beauty, Alexander, etc. They are just what particular people want in a fine table apple, being neither too sweet nor too sour, a fine looker' and have -good keeping qualities.. We unhesitatingly say we -consider it the best all round apple, espec ially for table use, and in our estimation Delicious should head the list of all apples." H.Woods Co., Commission Merchants i Chicago, 111., By C. W. Wilmeroth. T.. H. Atkinson, Evangelist-Orchardist " Chelan County, Washington., ivrttes.' "100 7 year old Delicious trees in the Blackman or chard, Kittitas Co., Washington, are bowed to the ground with tneir fruit and this year, when prices are low, turned a revenue to the owner of $2000.00 Eight years ago this land could have been purchased for a trifle.
