"MERRY WAR." That Ohio will be the scenr jnusual political activity be- fen now and the mtennsi of the national convention which is to nominats a man for election to the presidency in 1908 is very ; evident. The leaders in the strife are destined t3 be Senator Foraker and Secretary of War ! Taft. "Fire-alarm" Foraker is recognized by all as a corpora-; tiomst first, last and eternally, 1 while Taft is a man fully . in sym pathy with the policies of Presi- ! dent. Roosevelt. Foraker seeks to befog: the public mind and make it believe that the Rooseveltian policy of, railroad regulation, and the con-! trol of corporations in general, is a menace to the commonwealth, j a blow at manufacturers, at com- ! merce, in fact, .at industrial life j in general in the United States-1 Secretary of War Taft will stand ; for what the people want and have' long desired in having cor- j porations controlled sufficiently ; to assure all classes "a square deal." It is plain ts see who will fare bei.t at the hands of the peo ple. MAN'S I M POTENCY. "Great is Aliah!" Yea, great indeed is some power, call it by any name you choose. The po wer is the same if called God or Allah, if deified or denied divin ity, if worshipped or scoffed at, if petitioned or defied. What a power it must be a law which governs the universe. In a physical sense alone can man catch a glimmer of this great controlling force, for that which is physical is more readily com prehensible to the human mind. Worlds are whirled through space as easily as the boy throws his handball, and are always ?rned by this incomprehen e power. The exactness of the workings of the various nets in their relation to one another would seem to indicate somewhere a fountain-head f this power or wisdom, or what ever it may be in all its intangi bility. In comparison, how small and insignificant and impotent is the power of the greatest human mind, marvelous as appears the Catalog and It Will Always Bo Your Eggs 25 Brands of BREAKFAST FOODS We Carry BUT YOU WANT TO This food is put up in one pound packages and sold for 15 cents a package at MODES GROQERY resources of the latter. Instances of these facts are furnished in such catastrophes as visited San Francisco one year ago yesterday. In this ca; e, as in thousands previous, was made manifest the fact that the greatest man was but an atom and his attempts' to safe guard against this incomprehen sible power in the course of its workings is so weak in reality as to excite human compassion for oneself and kind. During the past year there have been many of these demon strations, carrying to eternity thousands of human beings and destroying untold millions of dol lar's worth of property. In every instance there has appear ed no favored people, religion nor creed all were alike before this great power, all as the same children, so to speak. The latest of these demonstra tions of force incomprehensible occurred in Mexico a few days ago when there were gathered to their Fathers hundreds of human beings; when the destruction of property exceeded the possibility of estimation; when the earth was opened, shaken, twisted and warped despite the tearful pray ers and evidences of human anguish- It was willed so-r-it had tc be. What is the power beside which man is so impotent? The world's greatest are mystified. Because President Roosevelt is alleged to have referred to Moyer and Haywood? on trial for the murder of the late Gov. Steunen- bergof Idaho, as "undesirable cit-" izens" the Chicago Federation of Labor has asked him for an ex planation of the meaning of his language. What answer can the president make in order to soothe the sensibilities of a lot of contemptible ignoramuses who demand an explanation of his! language in such a case? Should Teddy take time to answer there will likely be no misunderstand ing as to his meaning in using the language credited him nor in the terms employed in his answer. Matters of Emphasis Among prominent lines of high-grade merchandise we especially emphasize the following well-known makes which are exclusively handled by lis: The Famous Broadhead Dress Goods, Wooltex cloaks, Suits and Skirts (for well-dressed women), Royal Worcester Corsets, Utz & Dunn's Ladies' Fine shoes and Oxfords, Peerless Undermuslins, Derby Kid Gloves, Brandegee Kincaid & Woods' Men's Fine Clothing none better. Extra good Clothes Our Endeavor to Price First-Class 25 TRY THE LATKST WORTHY OF ATTENTION. School Directors Take Notice. School Funds to be Forfeited. I hereby call the attention of the Board of Directors of the several school districts of the county to the bew law regulating the holding over of school funds from year to year. Heretofore each district was entitled to hold a sum not to exceed $50 The new law which goes into ef fect May "5, 19( 7, provides 'hat any part of the 85 per cent of the mcn?y drawn during the year, and which must be spent for teachers' salary, and for no other purpose, ren aining on hand at the end ol the school year, is foifeiied to the general school fund of the county. On aud alter May 25, 1907, each distriit clerk's teport will be carefully examined to see that the 85 percent ia spent for teachers' talary and for no other pur pose. Therefore each district having on band any part of this 85 per cent fund at the end of year w ill forfeit same by virtue of the law. As I have no descretion in the matterf but only the law t" govern me, districts must look after their in terests i'i the matter. Clerk's salary must not be taken trom this 85 per cent fund, it must be taken from the 15 per cent allowed for other purposes. Very truly, GEORGE W. DENMAN, 33-4 County School Superintendent. Actually Cares Catarrh. It is one thing to claim, but another thing to back up the claim by a statement that if not proven true, there will be no charge for the service or the goods. It is in this way that Graham & Wills sell Hyomei, for they have so much faith in its power to cure all forms of catarrh and bronchial troubles that tbey give an ab solute, unqualified guarantee with every outfit that if the remedy does not cure the money will be refunded. A complete Hyomei outfit costs but $1.00, makirg it not only a very pleasant method of treatment, but most economi cal. At a special meeting of the Corvallis cily council, Wednesday evening, a reso lution was adopted to invest the city w ith power to issue bonds for $5000 for the purchase of the old water plant or the establishment of a new pumping station. Another resolution ia to be prepared and presented to the council at its next meetiug next Wednesday night, the ob ject of which wiil be to so change the water com mission as to make the mem bers of the water committee elective two members to be elected each year. for Boys.
