LOCAL AMD PERSONAL Dr. Bannett, of Monroe, was a pleasant visitor in" Corvallis, Wed nesday. ' Mrs! A. J. Hall and Miss M. J. Lee were guests this week of Cor vallis relatives. " Mies Anna Maxfield leaves today for Kings Valley for a week's visit with her parents. E. E. White and family left Tuesday for the Independence hop yards for the season. I MrB. W. C, Swann has been the guest this week of Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Bane, west of town. Miss Lilly Gellatly has returned from Linn county, where Bhe went Saturday for a visit with friends. The little child of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Chipman, which has been seriously ill, is somewhat improved today. Jack Milne and bride moved Tuesday into the cottage on Ninth street vacated recently by Henry Price. v- ' ' ' Miss Minnette Phillips has ac cepted a position as teacher in the Peoria school for the coming nine months. Misses Mary ' Sutherland and Minnette Phillips left Wednesday for Halsey, to participate in the W. C.T.U. contest. William Hall of Polk county came to Corvallis this week to act as yard boss at the D. B. Taylor hop yard. , ; M. E. Church, South: Sabbath School at 10 a. m. The train will run on the regular Sunday tchedule between this city and the bay. At the sea side the greater part of the summer guests are now &one but a program of entertainment will be provided for the Elks that will be novel and enjoyable so that the visit to the bay for the party will be one cf the events of the season. The rata for the round trip will be only $1.50 and this rate will also apply to the Saturday to Monday tickets. ' A large crowd is expected to be in 'at tendance,; . - V. U. Berchtold left yesterday for Bellmeham, Wash., for a visit with her parents and other relatives . Milton Morgan and family mov ed Tuesday and Wednesday into the M. C. Miller house on Water street. Among the people who left Wed nesday for the hop fields were the Fullerton, Graves and Beckwith families. Bruce Hamer, of Nashville, was a Corvallis visitor Wednesday. He formerly conducted the store at Nashville. It is stated that M. D. McCallis ter has informed tbe college author ities that he will not return to OAC this fall as instructor in the wood work department. Miss Emma Baber, a graduate of OAC, now a trained nurse, of Portland, is spending her vacation with her parents at Junction City. She went home Saturday. Mies Edith Alderson, of Baker City, is visiting Corvallis friends, having arrived Tuesday. She for merly taught in the Corvallis pub lic school and has many friends here. - The old creamery building is be ing remodeled and transformed in to a private dwellings .It is the property of George Taylor, and Bryant and Charles Young are the workmen; Mr. Bunker, a brother-in-law of .T. Ireland arrived home the first of this week from their trip to Prineville in search of desert claims. They were not pleased with the country in that section, however, and did not secure claims. They had been absent over two weeks. Miss Aimee Leverett, who is fc.pen.ling the summer at her home in Arkansas, has telegraphed Presi dent Gatch her resignation as teach er in the art department at OAC The vacancy has not yet been filled as the resignation was not expected, and no explanation of the mutter has yet come by letter. The search for houses is becom ing more lively as the date for the opening of college draws nearer, but only nn occasional student is as yet seen on tho streets. Many will go to the hop yards before coming to Corvallis to begin their year's work at OAC, and the coin thus earned will later on he put into circulation in- Corvallis stores and shops. The annual exhibit from Benton county to the stnt fair is to b shipped from this city to Silom to day. " Roman Zahn, the well-known Alsea resident, was in Corvallis, Tuesday, en route to the Ireland hop yard for an outing. Con Gerhard, the book-Btore man with the "touching" brown eyes, was in Albany a few days ago, where he, joined the Elks. Ben Elgin arrived Tuesday from Wenatchee, Wash., where he holds a" position in a drug store, and will visit relatives for a week or two. Mrs. Oliver Wicks, of Astoria. has arrived for a visit with Corval lis relatiyes. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Millnollen. We are reliably informed tbat there is an "& Co." to the printing firm of M. P. Morgan, and that C. A. Gerhard represents the "& Co." Miss Golda Howard of Bellefoun- tam was in Uorvauis lueeday, en route to Waeco, Eastern Oregon, where she has ah eight months' term of school. . Mrs. Dur no arrived Tuesday from Silverton for a visit with friends. Her husband is employed in the Fischer mill at that plac. The family formerly resided in Corval lis. ' Otto Morgan, formerly of this city, went to Portland a few-days ago to accept, a position as assistant operator in the Western Union tele graph office. This is a fine show ing for a lad of 16. An oil well is located on the Whitaker ranch near Monmouth, and it is declared by the Westside Enterprise to be entire ly within the bounds, of possibilities that within the near future Polk county roads will be sprinkled with oil from a Polk county oil well. City Water Works office is located in the City Hall. 74 It is authoritatively stated that Fred Herbold, who was to coach the OAC football team the coming season, has notified tbe athletic managers of the col lege that be will not act in that capacity for OAC, this fall. The reason for his resignation was not learned. This is an other blow to the football prospects of OAC for the coming year, and it now appears that college will bs obliged to open with less than a full corps of in structors, as well as minus an athletic manager and a coach, v - . Eight sections of fine timber land are said to also have been pur chased. On one of the sections the Al sea Falls are located, which could easily furnish 500 horse power for any pur poses desired. Anotner statement is that the purchasers are to build a saw mill at Junction City or Corvallis, with a capacity of 100,000 to 150,000 feet, and that a railroad for hauling logs from the timber to the mill will be built. The rumors, ho w ever, are not confirmed.
