nual Elk's crab feed and outing and
the antleied herd of the valley will
gather for the event in large num
bers. The train will run on the
regular Sunday tchedule between
this city and the bay. At the sea
side the greater part of the summer
guests are now &one but a program
of entertainment will be provided
for the Elks that will be novel and
enjoyable so that the visit to the
bay for the party will be one cf the
events of the season. The rata for
the round trip will be only $1.50
and this rate will also apply to the
Saturday to Monday tickets. ' A

Henderson Murphy, Al Steven
son and W. P. Ireland arrived home

claims. They were not pleased
with the country in that section,
however, and did not secure claims.

Miss Aimee Leverett, who is

er in the art department at OAC
The vacancy has not yet been filled
as the resignation was not expected,
and no explanation of the mutter
has yet come by letter.
The search for houses is becom
ing more lively as the date for the
opening of college draws nearer, but
only nn occasional student is as
yet seen on tho streets. Many will
go to the hop yards before coming
to Corvallis to begin their year's
work at OAC, and the coin thus
earned will later on he put into
circulation in- Corvallis stores and
shops.
The annual exhibit from Benton
county to the stnt fair is to b
shipped from this city to Silom to
day. It will include the perma
nent exhibit that is kept at the
court house, and which was at thn
Lewis and Clark fair, and many

ranch near Monmouth, and it is declared
by the Westside Enterprise to be entire
ly within the bounds, of possibilities
that within the near future Polk county
roads will be sprinkled with oil from a

It is authoritatively stated that Fred
Herbold, who was to coach the OAC
football team the coming season, has
notified tbe athletic managers of the col
lege that be will not act in that capacity
for OAC, this fall. The reason for his
resignation was not learned. This is an
other blow to the football prospects of
OAC for the coming year, and it now
appears that college will bs obliged to
open with less than a full corps of in
structors, as well as minus an athletic
manager and a coach, v - .

The .report is current that the "Walters
saw mill, a few miles from Monroe, has
been purchased b Eastern capitalists,
through an agent named Back, for
f 40,000. Eight sections of fine timber
land are said to also have been pur
chased. On one of the sections the Al
sea Falls are located, which could easily
furnish 500 horse power for any pur
poses desired. Anotner statement is
that the purchasers are to build a saw
mill at Junction City or Corvallis, with
a capacity of 100,000 to 150,000 feet, and
that a railroad for hauling logs from the
timber to the mill will be built. The
rumors, ho w ever, are not confirmed.
