My husband felt disheartened) as well as I, for home with, a sick woman is a disconsolate place at best. A friendly druggist advised him to get a bottle of Wine of Cardui for me to try, and he did so. I began to improve in a few days and my recovery was very rapid. With in eighteen weeks I was another being. Mrs. Stowe's letter shows every woman how a home is saddened by female weaknes and how completely Wine of Cardui cures that sick ness and brings health and happi ness again. Do not go on Buffer ing. Sometimes Controls the Soldiers, There are probably no soldiers in the world more patriotic than are the Russians. They are blind ly devoted to the cause of the "great white father," who rules them with an iron hand, and the xtremest sacrifices are made by them cheerfully whenever th.j emergency requires them, says a London exchange. Here is a story of Russian bravery: There is a monument in Turkestan to sev ?ral Russian soldiers captured by the Turcomans in 876. They were artillerymen, and their guns were captured with them, so the Turco mans naturally ordered them, on penalty of death, to serve those guns against their own comrades. Every man refused, choosing ieath by horrible torture and dy ing without a murmur. This passion for self-sacrifice is the keynote of the Russian char acter, and is cultivated in the army by every possible means.. The recruit is invariably told the story ofHhat heroic company ol infantrymen in the Lomakin expe iition into Turkestan, who, at a critical moment, - threw them selves into a deep ditch in order that the guns, which were sorely aeeded at the front, might be gal loped over their bodies. It is ioubtf ul whether thiB could have happened, in any army but the Russian. If there is one thing in which he Russian army excels it is narching. Lord Roberts' famous narch to Kandahar has beet qualed over and over again by zar's troops in the central Asia ampaigns. : "W hen Gen. Kur opatkin marched a force of Turkestan troops to join Skobeloff in the attack on Geols repe he and his men were swal lowed up in an unknown, track less desert for 26 days, yet thej pvered over 40 miles a day anc marched in at theend of the time in perfect military order without i single man sick of fallen out. II was a wonderful feat, but it was not regarded in Russian military ircles as being anything extraor linary. A former captain of the RussiaE irmy told me of a friend of his who lived for years m a smal: iown and was then ordered to St Petersburg.. In less than six uonths he received a command te return and ' promptly blew his drains out. "Nobody was surprised," said ny friend. "We all know what ife in such places is like. A man Ian be happy in Siberia on a lonely wtpost where he has.no compan- ons of his own rank within 10(1 njles, but there iSno happiness xissible in a small Russian gar risen town for a man of average intelligence." " v HAINAN GATE SYMBOL. Ddd Object of Mythical History Be- eently Beceived in Jffew !T 1 - . ' Tor City. :;: X curio importer in Broadway las received from Hainan China, i strange symbol to be set up on :he gatepost of a fashionable New port residence, says the New York Times. 1 The symbol consists of the bones of a python molunas. In Hainan, its jungle home, it grows to be :ween 20 and 30 feet long, has f ear ul teeth in its upper jawbones, and i double series of shields on the ower surface of the tail. This par ticular beast was killed by the vil lagers on account of its wicked ap petite. It' has a genealogy that ;eats that of almost any famous family in New York. Its father ind mother held a cave-home for 'ears. The old man-python used to suffocate harmless Chinamen by pnveloping them in his coils, seiz- tug , Lilt; ill uj ljuc ucau, ami gi au- :ually drawing them down into his interior. The pythoness-mother made away with the juicy sheep of the neighborhood. Underneath; ,'the bones will be a plate with the quotation from Bacon, 'Saith the Pythonissa to Saul, to-morrow .thou and thy; sons shall be with toe" - ' OThat We Know. Ksrsr England Woman Xakee XMacov -' - mrj That Xo Pro vision Za Xade for Company. 'On of my first discoveries," said a New England woman who had been transplanted to a New York flat, accord ing to the Sun, "was that flat dweller made no frovislon for 'company' In th way that I had alWSjis supposed it must be done. Such a thing as a guest room In an ordinary flat is apparently un dreamed of. This lack seemed very heathenish to me, and I insisted that one of my five rooms should be set aside as sacred to the chance guest. One day when I was expecting two very dear friends I was moved to mention my pleasant anticipation to my next neigh bor, a bride of a few months. .Her con cern for me in what she evidently re garded as a predicament was funny. "'Company?' she exclaimed. 'Going to stay two weeks? What in the world will you do with them? Why do you know, we've never even let my hus band's folks know about our marriage jtjst for that very reason, 1 haven't any -place, for company and they're just the kind that would flock to visit us country .folks, -you know Fred's peo ple all live in Rochester.'" SHARP POINT OF LETTERS. Mail Clerk Complain of Pins Taed In Eptatlea Gets Many Digs During Say. "If people must stick pins In their tetters, I wish they, would cover -up the . points so they wouldn't push through," said a mail clerk, whose hands were disfigured by tiny scratches. relates the New York Times. "I'll bet I get 100 digs a day from pins, that sys tematic folks use to hold their corre spondence together. I - never could make out, anyway, why so many letters need to he finished off with a pin. Of iourse, I understand that about half of those written by women have a post script in the shape of a sample of dress ?oods or newspaper clippings, which perhaps require a pin or two to hold them in place, but even that habit can iot account for the large number of let ters that come through the post office with a pin sticking out of one corner. I have come to the conclusion that many writers so nail their manuscript with malicious intent. It may not be i us fellows In the postal service against whom they hold a grudge, but we are the ones that usually get the benefit of those pins." TRINQUET, ORIGIN OFTENN1S Popular Game Came from Ancient Pastime Played by the Basque Peasantry. Popular among the Basque peasantry is an ancient game known as trinquet. No one knows the origin of tricquet; like all Basque customs, it can be traced back and back till its history is lost in a remote past. Nearly every court in the country bears the aspect of extreme age. The court at Bayonne is believed to be 400 years old. and the one at St Jean de Luz looks older than the one at Bayonne. When Louis XIV.. who was married in St. Jean de Luz church, went down to the little frontier town to meet his Spanish bride he found the Bascti.es of St. J"an de Luz energetically play !ng their ancient game; and he took the Idea back with him to Paris, and from it largely modifipd comes the geme tennis. Tennis and trinquet are very similar, save that instead of racquets i leather arrangement, known as a glove, is used for propelling the ball. OLDEST PERSON IN AFRICA Census Enumerators Unearth Ex traordinary Specimen of Longevity Woman la 118 Years Old. During their investigations the cen sus enumerators in the Krugersdorp district unearthed an extraordinary specimen of longevity in the person of a very old native woman, whose age Is believed to exceed 112 years. She went to the Transvaal with the original band of the rebellious subjects of Chaka, the Zulu Napoleon. Her parchment face Is wrinkled like a piece of corrugated Iron or a walnut shell, and she Is stone deaf, but is otherwise in possession ot all her faculties. She it surrounded by a whole tribe of descendants, down to the fifth or sixth generation, and the superstitious natives invest her with air the mystic charms of immor tality. She is believed to be one of King Edward's oldest subjects. WAYSIDE INN FOR GEESE. Daniel Scott, , Owner of "Scotland's" Plantation, Began the Custom ot deeding- Wild Fowls, Tears before the .war Daniel Scott, the owner of "Scotland's" plantation, in Albemarle county, Va., began the cus tom of feeding flocks of wild geese each spring and summer on their semi-annual migrations. The custom has con tinued to this day, being kept up by the descendants of Mr. Scott. He had a special garment which he donned when feeding the hungry birds, and in this they invariably recognized hini. The children, grandchildren and greatgrand children of the first geese have been well instructed In regard to this "way side inn," for they always tarry there to get provisions.
