are the Russians. They are blind
ly devoted to the cause of the
"great white father," who rules
them with an iron hand, and the
xtremest sacrifices are made by
them cheerfully whenever th.j

London exchange. Here is a story
of Russian bravery: There is a
monument in Turkestan to sev
?ral Russian soldiers captured by
the Turcomans in 876. They were
artillerymen, and their guns were
captured with them, so the Turco
mans naturally ordered them, on
penalty of death, to serve those
guns against their own comrades.
Every man refused, choosing
ieath by horrible torture and dy
ing without a murmur.
This passion for self-sacrifice
is the keynote of the Russian char
acter, and is cultivated in the
army by every possible means..
The recruit is invariably told the

Pastime Played by the Basque
Peasantry.
Popular among the Basque peasantry
is an ancient game known as trinquet.
No one knows the origin of tricquet;
like all Basque customs, it can be traced
back and back till its history is lost in
a remote past. Nearly every court in
the country bears the aspect of extreme
age. The court at Bayonne is believed
to be 400 years old. and the one at St
Jean de Luz looks older than the one at
Bayonne. When Louis XIV.. who was
married in St. Jean de Luz church, went
down to the little frontier town to meet
his Spanish bride he found the Bascti.es
of St. J"an de Luz energetically play
!ng their ancient game; and he took
the Idea back with him to Paris, and
from it largely modifipd comes the geme
tennis. Tennis and trinquet are very
similar, save that instead of racquets
i leather arrangement, known as a
glove, is used for propelling the ball.
OLDEST PERSON IN AFRICA

traordinary Specimen of Longevity
Woman la 118 Years Old.
During their investigations the cen
sus enumerators in the Krugersdorp
district unearthed an extraordinary
specimen of longevity in the person of
a very old native woman, whose age Is
believed to exceed 112 years. She went
to the Transvaal with the original band
of the rebellious subjects of Chaka, the
Zulu Napoleon. Her parchment face
Is wrinkled like a piece of corrugated
Iron or a walnut shell, and she Is stone
deaf, but is otherwise in possession ot
all her faculties. She it surrounded
by a whole tribe of descendants, down
to the fifth or sixth generation, and
the superstitious natives invest her
with air the mystic charms of immor
tality. She is believed to be one of
King Edward's oldest subjects.

the owner of "Scotland's" plantation, in
Albemarle county, Va., began the cus
tom of feeding flocks of wild geese each
spring and summer on their semi-annual
migrations. The custom has con
tinued to this day, being kept up by
the descendants of Mr. Scott. He had
a special garment which he donned when
feeding the hungry birds, and in this
they invariably recognized hini. The
children, grandchildren and greatgrand
children of the first geese have been
well instructed In regard to this "way
side inn," for they always tarry there
