"I have just returned from a western trip and the number of tramps travel ing toward the western farming coun try is astonishing. The train men told me that the migration is apparently larger this year than ever before, but whether this is an indication of pros perity or is on account of the presiden tial year I cannot say. Every freight train has its quota and the life of the train -crews Is , a hard one. Many of these hoboes go to the -farms for per haps a month and get together enough money to last them through the season their chief expense of course being for whiskey and tobacco. Then after they get through work they hit the road again and in the winter take up their quarters -wherever they choose." VANDERBILT'S FUNNY STORY BEAUTIES OF THE ARCTIC. Desolate Though, the Troaen S Is, - It Xs .Vot Altogether Lek v ... log in Attractions. One of the most vivid descrip tions of arctic scenery ever penned is given by' Harry De Windt in his book, "Paris to New York by Land." In it he gives the following picture of . the Arctic sea: , .-. . "Place a piece of coal sprinkled with salt on a white tablecloth, a few inches off it scatter gome lump sugar, and it will give you in miniature a' verv fair nresent- v j. merit of the scenery. The coal is the bleak coast line, continually swept 'clear of snow by furious gales; the sugar, sea ice, and the cloth frozen beach over .which wc journeyed for over 160 miles. The dreary v outlook-never changed ; occasionally thp - cliffs ! vanished and our way would lie across the tundras marshy plainswhich in summer encircle the Polar sea with a belt of ver dure and wild flowers, but which in winter time are merged with the frozen ocean in one boundless, bewildering wilderness of white. In hazy weather land and sky formed ,one impenetrable veil, with no horizon as dividing line. when, even at a short distance away, men and dog sleds resem bled flies crawling up a white cur tain. "' . . ? "But on clear days, unfortun ately rare, the blue sky was Med iterranean, and at such times th bergs out at sea would flash like jewels in the full blaze of the sun shine, while blocks of dark green ice, half buried, in snow under shadow of the cliffs would appear for all the world like "cabochon' emeralds dropped into a mass of whipped cream.
