"I have just returned from a western
trip and the number of tramps travel
ing toward the western farming coun
try is astonishing. The train men told
me that the migration is apparently
larger this year than ever before, but
whether this is an indication of pros
perity or is on account of the presiden
tial year I cannot say. Every freight
train has its quota and the life of the
train -crews Is , a hard one. Many of
these hoboes go to the -farms for per
haps a month and get together enough
money to last them through the season
their chief expense of course being for
whiskey and tobacco. Then after they
get through work they hit the road
again and in the winter take up their
quarters -wherever they choose."

Windt in his book, "Paris to New
York by Land." In it he gives the
following picture of . the Arctic
