(HP CORVALLIS GAZETTE Tuesdays and Fridays, Alton B.. Parker, of New York has had the honor of bein? ncmi--f sated by the Demooratic Nation - - al Convention, at St. Louis, on a platform with a hole in it. Mr. Paiker is a pronounced Gold - Democrat, and is to stand for a party that had not the courage to announce its principles on the -. money question. Poor Alton. Ex-Senator Davis, of West Vir- ginia, will go on the ticket as an ' "'aiso ran." "New Masonic Lodge'in Toledo. Under instruction from the Grand Master of the state, Past Grand Master J. C. Moreland, of Portland, instituted Lincoln ; Lodge No 124, A. F. & A. M. in " Toledo, on Saturday evening last "-The lodge started in with a mem bership of over thirty, and with ;.good prospects of rapid growth. The following officers were duly installed by the acting Grand Master. O. L. Gray, W. M. iB. E. Gaither, S. W. Henry Gaunon, J. W. ' Wm. Scarth,Treas. C. E. Hawkins, Sec. Jas..McDonaid, S. D- Joe Gaither, J. D. N. Anderson, S. S. Geo. Hall, J. S. Jos. Hall, Tyler. 'The impressive ceremonies of f the order were performed in the masterly manner customary to our distinguished brother More- i l-infl A riirp Innrh was served 1 j 1 nA - an enjoyable evening. The new master, G. L. Gray, is Custodian of the work, of the -Grand Lodge, and one of the best iDosted Masons in the State. At the close of the meeting """Grand Master Moreland, A. G. Weatherford and J. R. Wyatt, boarded a gasoline launch for a quick trip to Newport, where they proposed to spend the night and enjoy an early breakfast at -Mrs, Abbey's bountiful table. But the best laid plans of mice - and men do not always work out Iford's ability as a pilot on Ya quina Bay had been over esti mated. A meandering mud bank thrust itself under the launch and :in a few moments she lay high and drv on tori of fourteen feet v. of moist mud, with plenty of water in the dim distances in every direction, and the tide going out. There they lay and - counted the hours till after ten the next morning, when the lis ting tide mercifully lifted the bqat from the bank. The spot can be located for several days yet by a dense and impenetrable ublue cloud which hovers over it. vCold,- weary - and ravenously hungry the party reached New port on Sunday morning, too late . for breakfast, with a ' whole day U before them to view the splendid : scenery of that delightful seaside 1 resort. But for this party Ya qnina Bay had lost its beauty J Enthusiasm on that; subjoct was no longer possible. 'But one fining is certain,; the next 'time r sthey have a midnight trip to 3aake from Toledo to Newport, v-r-everybody will walk. Good Roads for Benton. We feel assured that practical results will be accomplished be- i fore the rainy season sets in, in the matter of good county roads. 'While in many places good ma " : ferial ran -not he had for can. - -struction and foundation work, yet commendable work, is being done with such material as is at t band. In places where stone and ? gravel can be secured the super ' visors are doing excellent 'work; 1 II often happens, however, that ; fir bush and poles are the only material to be had and the level ling of last winter's ruts is all that can be done. ' ' ' We feel sure with the material at hand and the difficulties en countered and thelimited amount of money with which to meet them,' the presentcorps of-county road supervisors will be second to 7 none in industry arid intelligence. f The following is the list: No 1 Albert Wilson, No a H M Fleming, No 3 Dick Kiger, No 4Harley Hall, No 5 Lewis Wentz No 6 E M Dodele, No 7 John Price, No 8 Chas Skaggs, No 9 G A Cadwalader, No 10 C R Ballard, No n J R Fehler, No 12 G R Taylor, No 13 J E Ban ton, No 14 E N Starr, No 15 D B Farley, "No 16 J M Herron, No 17 Doke Gray, No -i8.CE Banton, No 19 H Hector, No 20 B W Harris, No 21 J O Wilson. County Court Notes. The county court convened in regular session - Wednesday, July 6. One change was made in the regular list of officers, R. S. Ir win, commissioner, retiring by the election of Peter Rickard. The county officers whose terms began in July, filed their bonds and' assumed the role of office, Wednesday, July 6. Sheriff M. Pv Burnett gave bond for $10,000, Clerk V. P.; Moses, $10,000, Treasurer Buchanan, $20,000, Recorder Vincent, $5000 and S. N. Wilkins, $1000. The bonds were al approved by the county court and ordered filed for record. The offer of J. H. Wilson to audit the books ot the Sheriff, Recorder, Treasurer and School Superintendent for the period from July 7, 1902 to July 5, 1904 for the sum of $150 was accept ed and Mr. Wilson ordered to proceeded with the examination and report his findings in writ ing to the court, at its regular session in September. DeBois and Son go to Trial. Mr. DeBois and son, who are accused of burglarizing seaside cottages and who were brought for safe keeping to Corvallis be cause the Lincoln county jail was deemed unsafe, were taken to To ledo, Saturday, to appear there in. the July term of the Circuit Court on the above named charge. Mr. DeBois especially has been very impatient during confine ment, owing probably to the fact that he has a wife and several small children who are deprived of their main support by his con finement. There is strong evi dence against him, but he seems to have been driven to his deed by dire necessity. The articles stolen consist of sheets, pillow cases and blankets and a suit of clothes. These things he put in to a box and buried it in his front yard. When the authorities came to search the premises they found a garden growing over the spot where he had planted the box. It seems a very unfortunate case indeed as the previous re cord has been an exemplary one. It is said that he was at one time a minister, which ould make the case all the more sad. There seems te be no doubt of the father's guilt. The mercy of the court, which under the circum stances -would seem well bestowed may probably be the only thing that will save him from serving a sentence. 't'.f A. L. rtfcFadden sues Ttflotson. A. L. McFadden. formerly an attorney of this place, who was sued some time ago by J. is. Tillotson, of Portland on the charge of the iiulawful securing of money and was acquitted in the recent term of the State Cir cuit Court, has now brought suit against Tillotson for damages amounting to $10,000. Mr. Mc Fadden was. formerly employed by Tillotson as a bookkeeper. Tillotson is a .prominent con tractor of Portland. In , his , complaint McFadden alleges'that on January 13, 1904, he was arrested at Chitwood, at the instigation of Tillotson, on a charge of forging and unlawfully indorsing a bank check. He was brought to Portland and confined in the city mil. and" was released on 1 1 000 bonds. ? He avers . that his arrest was due to' malice i and with Weri't to iniure him. and says there was no probable cause for the pretermenr. ot ? a cnarge against' him: Besides the $10, 000 damagesvaskedy -McFadden seeks to recover the sum of $438, the cost of his trial and attorneys and witness fees.
