We are all desirous of having more people come toCorvallis; good responsi ve people, who will make good citizens. This proposed taxing cf mortgages will drive these people away, and send our best citizens from , home. - Many of them have already gone, still holding securities in the county, knowine that a' morteasre tax cannot reach a non-resident, while many or our newcomers are waiting -an opportunity to get away. In the city of Cor- vallis. taxes are four and a halt per cent. this leaves but one and one-half per cent for the mortgagee to live upon. Do you want to populate your coun ty? Or are "you blind? This state of affairs cannot be kept from - the public. There are those among us that will ' send it forth. It is a matter of justice to the proposed, newcomer that this proposed taxing of mort gages should be known.
