HE COBMUS GEETTE. TUESDAY, JUNE 24, 1902. POOL YOUR HOPS. The Ore pon hoo cioo will b' eat to the average yield, and grow-i J f will receive fifteen cents per i s -will receive ntteen cents pe bund for their product Tins is lie assurance given by secretary Winstanley, of the Oregon Hop rowers Association, after an m- t 3 pection of numerous yards, ana careful study ot the mar ice t. Mr. Winstanlev is pleased with he prospects for good prices for his year's hops, which he says Will surelv be realized. He says the American crop is practically air cleaned up. while in fcnelana rnere remains oniy au imv-i.v fauality of hops of last season's fcrop. With these core nun, uc ifijmres that there will be a brisk I .. t r l demand at unusually gooa prices for Orep-on's choice quality Ot hops be2inniBg with the opening at C A 1 -1. M f IAI1HT3T1 PV OI IIJC IUdl Js.ce. j di edicts that choice hops win n T?!tll r.rin$r iS to 2i cents per pound. He lecognizes, in the contracting business, a prac tice that 's not only unprofitable tn iVic o-rower. but harmful to the market. W. H. Egan, president of the association, lavors a pool oi Ure-gon-grown hops again this season, He savs that in view of the fa vorable conditions that exist and the incoming prospects for a good price for this year's crop, it is a mistake for Prowers to contract their entire crop, or even a oortion. at prices ranging from io to i cents per pound. The best contract figure for 1902 hops that has thus far been recorded in Marion county is xV2 cents, and this, Mr. Egan predicts, will be a lower figure than the crop will command in open market. Mr. Egan thinks that the success of last year's operations nas uuuc much to dispel any doubts as 10 the ability of the organization to f et a better price tor hops. The Italian Prune. A. Sharpks, of Goshen, Ore p-on. who has been about twenty pars a close observer of the orune industry ot Western Ore ron and Washington, contributes an article to the Agriculturist, from which the following is an extract: That there is a constitutional weakness in the Italian tree is, I think, clearl jr shown in the in crease of that diseased condition kmown as the curled leaf, that triU weakened condition is the result of abnormal conditions in h terminals of the limbs and the small wood thai is immedi ately bekind the limbs; also that it is a condition tliat is aeveiopea and intensified as the tree ap proacb.es and reaches the bearing age. That it is not a condition of the soil, the root, the trunk or the large limbs, is proven by the following fact: Let a tree in all it limbs be affected with curl leaf, and then prune one of its larger limbs; a vigorous sprout atarts out: this sprout, or rather the leaves on this sprout will not for several vears manifest this diseased condition of the leaves, in fact, not at all until it com tnenres sendine out fruit buds and producing prunes. Now if the trouble causing this condition of the leaf was in the ground, the bark, the roots, the wood of the trunk or 1 1 ro-e limbs, this immunity of the"sprout would not exist but it would suffer the same as the old er wood The objection may be made to this idea that the curl leat does not occur every year, nor with the same degree of intensity every year that it does occur, To this objection which is well made, it must be answered that nn diseased condition in either vegetable or animal life can oc rnr exceot that there are two causes acting together, viz: a nrerlisnosinor and au exciting l r a cause.
