THE CORMALU GAZETTE, FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 1901. THE POLICY OF PROTECTION. The policy of the republican party regarding tariff for the protection of our industries and laborers, has come to be an estab lished principle of our govern ment. In order for this to be come : a great ncl prosperous nation, capable of sustaining a large and growing population, we must have all classes of in dustries tnorougnly built up within our own eonntry. It is impossible to develop a large and dense population from our agn cultural resources alone, and where the people are busy in the production of raw material only, and shipping the same to foreign countries to be made into 'tnan- factured goods and reshipped for oar consumption as finished products, because a part of this population, the laborers, would bare to be in the foreign coun try where the work of manufac- Ltaringwas being done. In the early history of our republic, waoui me aia oi iann on our manufactured articles, the older established faetories of Europe were able to ship their products to this Country and sell at such low priGes that similar articles could not be produced here The protective system was found . absolutely necessary in order to sustain the home industries, be sides Citing to our home labor ers the work of manufacturing. The policy of the republican party is also such that as the in dnstrles of our country become so strong and self-sustaining that they can withstand the com petition from foreign manufac tunes without protection, the tariff can gradually be reduced The time was when a protective tariff was applied to enable new industry to start in this Country and Boon thereafter the newly manufactured produet, ader the tariff, was made to sell for less than the foreign imported article was previously sold. All shades and conditions of political belief must feel assured that cur country cannot build up to become powerful and dense 1 a 44 f jy populates unless au ot our varied industries are completely sustained at heme without the necessity of the imported article. Under the watchful and pro tecting care of the republican party the tariff will be gradually reduced as the respective Indus tries of our country grow so strong as not to need protection to sustain them. What is here said regarding the manufacturer applies to the laborer in the fac tory, for the interests of the laborer and manufacturer are the same. To sustain the in dustry when needed protection is withdrawa, wages must first ba reduced. Finally, the factory closes as was the case during Cleveland's administration, with the result that labor is left with out employment. . , Mess-Bearing. Several years ago Newport man roada a very successful ex periment in shipping a few car loads ot apples from Lincoln county to Chieage. Now, things appear to have taken a step backward and it is thought, in a measure, to be due to lack of steamship connection with San Francisco. A writer in the Evening Telegram contributes an article referring "to the great orchards of aged fruit trees adja cent to the Corvallis & Eastern that have apparently been long abandonded . to decay." The following is an extract from the article: On the eastern slope, of the Coast Range it is not unusual to see these orchards thickly cover ed with moss. In the first place tarn inmnrer lfarns that ths rli 1 matio conditions are favorable to the growth of this peculiar form ,atibu of moss, and like a green cartaia it covers fences, tree, and even the, timber, and at places is really beaatlful with Nature's decoration. ; An experienced or rtiflrdist savt that it takes a man A deal of work to keep an orchard clean, and that there is no other explanation of the appearance of these places than that the owners are too busy with other business or are too lazy to attend to clean ing them up. The country grows fruit despite the neglect It is just as interesting to dis- ' cover thut on the west . slope of 1 the Coast Range, in Lincoln, there is not to be seen this pe-! culiar lormatiou of moss on the the the the tree limbs. On this side moss drapery can be seen in open, but in the midst of trees nearer the ocean it is singu- ai to rind all the branches of the fruit trees and the trees of the forest perfectly free from it. And while fruit grows freely in that country, the people seem to be absolutely indifferent to the chances of making any profit out of the business. Lincoln county coHld send to the we-rld's mar kets some of . the . finest apples that are ever seen, . the country people would say, if the residents would take up the business en ergetically, or were encouraged with more transportation . reali ties. As One live man at Ya- quina said to a representative of this paper recently, it seems that the people have lost some of their ambition because they have been denied the advantage of coast steamer trade with San Fraacisco. An Isolated Case. Editor Gazette: We read a great deal now-a-days in favor of the old canteen: will you allow me a word on the other : side? ! L. R. Hanovan, late of the 4th Mo. Vol. writes: "Our regi ment had a canteen and it was run by the officers of the regi-r- ment. Liquor was sold at a profit of $ 1,000 a month. ' It was the understanding that this was used for : buying dainties or extra rations, but it was never used for this purpose. "Many a soldier's morals have been wrecked by the use of liquor sold from the canteen and soldiers have become insane from the same cause. The govern ment onght to protect its soldiers and forever prohibit the liquor canteen." L. Letter List. For the week ending April 20, 1901.
