THE mnillft GAZETTE, FRIDAY. AUGUST 17, 1900. UNLIMITED COINAGE. "The republican government keeps coining silver at the ratio of 16 to i and the republican papers keep howling about 50 cent money made by their own administration. As Mr. Miller suggests, if this ratio is such a bugaboo as so many papers keep crying, just for political effect, hadn't the government ought to be ashamed of itself for panning off on the people $100,000,000 of half price money. As a matter of fact a silver dollar coined is worth a dollar in gold." -Albany Democrat. Here, now, is an ex ample of the unfitness of the populist mind to grasp a propo sition. Editor Nutty has been one of the most ardent and we believe sincere supporters of the Chicago platform. But the trouble with him has been that he hasn't understood what he has beeu advocating. In the above article he comes out as a square-toed republican. He ad mits every contention of the re publican platform on the money question. "The republican gov ernment keeps coining silver at the ratio of 16 to 1," he says, and "as a matter of fact a silver dollar coined is worth a dollar in gold." What more does the .Bryan party want? The Kansas City platform demands the "free and unlimited coinage of sil ver and gold at the present legal ratio of 16 to 1." We have already the legal ratio of 16 to 1, and the free and unlimited coin a?e of ?old. so the essence of what the Bryan party de mand is the FREE and unlimited coinage of silver and it is the verv point which the democrat and the majority of the silverites overlook. Under the present system we can maintain the ratio of 16 to and Keep every silver dollar as good as a gold dollar, but throw off all restriction, adopt the money plank of the Kansas City platform, take away government control of the amount of silver to be coinecl , and the ratio be tween the value oi the metal in a silver dollar and a gold dollar would assume the same relation as the bullion value of each and be constantly varying. More bullion must be put into the silver dolar, making it bulky and unwieldy, or at the present bullion value of the two metals, a silver dollar of the present di mensions would be worth but fifty cents. RAISING A FALSE ISSUE. In his speech at Lebanon, shortly after his defeat for the presidency, Mr. Bryan declared that the great, the essential cause of all our financial troubles in this country was the demoni tization of silver. The tariff and all other issues which had been made paramount, were being put forward by the old parties to attract the attention of the peo ple troni the great cause of their distress. But no good could re sult until the free coinage of silver had been restored, and he proposed to labor to that end and to prevent nothing to ob scure it until it had been accom plished. Mr. Bryan's conten tion that no relief could come to the people until free coinage had been secured for silver, has been proven absolutely false by the events of the past four years. Never in its history has the coun try been so prosperous. We are rapidly changing from a debtor to a creditor nation ; the amount of gold in the treasury stands at the highest mark ever attained; the balance of trade in our favor never reached such a figure be fore; the per capita of circula tion has increased nearly six dol lars in the last four years; the wage of the laborer has advanced ; we have no great armies of un employed; capital is seeking in vestment; the number of busi ness failures is rapidly decreas ing, and the prospects for free coinage of silver have rapidly diminished. Mr. Bryan realizes all this. He knows that the neonle realize it and were be to come before the country on a silver platform he would not Stand the ghost of a show for election, so he adopts the tactics which three years ago he ac cused the old parties of using, and raises the false issue of imperialism. But Mr. Bryan has so thoroughly identified him self with the cause of silver that that will be the issue in spite of him. Get your Job Work done here In the Nest. Reprinted by Request.
