Thefollowiug high tribute to the character of the Second Oregon is from the Sau Francisco Call, and every Oregonian's heart must thrill with pride when he reflects, on the grand record the bova have made for the s-ate. To the boys them selves it will be a badge of distinc' tion during the coming years to ' have belonged to the Second Oregon: ' "Oregon has good reason to be -; proud of her boys. San Francisco . can and does bear witness to their " Vorth. During their stay in this city they won golden opinionc from all sorts of people, and now that they have returned to their homes we send after them the best of good wishes and the fullest praise for their conduct not only while in the service but during the brief stay . -i T . I . but their orderly course after being mustered out and paid off, exposed as they" were to the full tempta- tions which a large city oners to y.ojmg men away from home, can be attribnted only lo a natural nobility of character and a careful ' Fruifc is a 8Carce article in Ben home training. Oregon's volunteers ton county this season and very have borne witness not onlv to the patriotic valor of the state but to the sterling qualities of its virtue and the high standard of manhood inculcated in it households, Some fears have been felt in this city that the disbanding here of the volunteers on their arrival from the Philippines would result in the turning loose upon the community a large number "of idle men, who, instead of going home, would re main here to spend their money - and thus in the end add to the un employed and probably to the dis solute, idle class of the city. If any such fears were ever felt concerning the Oregon men they haye.fceen dissipated. All '. the members of that regiment stood as steadfast by their colors after being mustered out as before, and in ' a body they left us to return to the welcome that awaits them at home. , The course taken by the sons of our sister state is another illustra- uuu ui iub cnaracter oi me men who make up the volunteer armies that respond to the call of the Un ion. The men who are first to ral ly for the flag when the war breaks out are not the vagrant idlers and tramps of the city and countryside. They are the earnest young man hood of the nation. They fight for love of country and hot for ... mere love of adventure. Their, hearts are with their homes as well as .with the banners of their regiment, and as soon as they have accom plished through war an honorable i ; -f ii. i i . . - . r j i - . i peace with victory they gladly lay down their arms and, return mod estly to the work they left unfinish ed in their offices, their-shops and their farms. . Oregon, we repeat, can welcome her boys with a just pride. They have reflected honor upon her in peace as in war, out of service - as 'Well as in it. They were good men au biic x xxixirxuco no wen a.o oui ' diers, they were good men in San Francisco and gentlemen at all times. They have been faithful to the best aspirations of Oregon homes arid they merit every, honor the roud state may see fit to give them. A company has been organized t Eugene for the purpose of build ing a motor line from that city to Corvallis. The names of the men connected with it are a guarantee that the construction of such a road has been entered upon in good faith and that being the case there is little doubt of their ability to accomplish it. It is in every way feasible and desirable. It will pass through a level country wun no expensive grades, liight ot way ought to cost nothing lor the prop erty owners along the route will fye benefitted immensely by the :road and ought to help in every way. Money is plentiful and looking for investment, and a road between Eugene and Corvallis would pay good dividends from the start It would run through the richest section of the Willamette "Valley and new enterprises would pring up all along its route, doub ling the value of property and more than doubling the population Sooper or later such a road will ' be be built and it ought to be built now. Every tenantablo house in, Cor vallis is rented, and every day we meet people I joking for cottages to rent and unable to find -'-them. AVhv is it tha some-of our enter prising citizens cannot invest some 01 tneir surplus ca-n in building a 75 dozen or more neat cottaees for rent. It would be a paying investment. The school facilities here are unsurpassed, and the at tendance constantly srowinc Men of means want to come here and educate their families; many are coming, and many more would come jf they could find comfortable houses to rent, and they are will- ing to pay decent rent forf a decent house. - The fact is that more dwellings for rent has become necessity for Corvallis if the town is to reap any benefit from our schools. People won't buy or build for the college term, and if they can't rent, they won t come. Small cottages for rent would pay and we hope to see them built. The late unusual weather corn- ling in the midst of harvesting produced the usual crop of calami tv nroDhesies. but so far no serious damage has been done. The grain has received no serious injury, and hops are still looking well, and are still free from vermin. Enough for Local Use. few Prunes will be shipped few prunes will be shipped from here. In most localities there will be enough for local use,, -however. Apple3 are a failure in most places but there are small crops on some of the, orchards i Mr.- H. T. Bris- tow, on his 500-acre fruit ranch near Dusty, has a fair crop of ap ples on his seven-year-old Jona than, Ben Davis and Newtown Pip pin trees. His apple orchard is near the top of a very high hill on the red clay soil and numbered some 3,000 trees. His young pear orchard oC 2,000 trees principally Bartletts, is as fine as I have ever seen anywhere and seems to be per fectly -healthy. It; is on rather moist clay ground on the slope of the foothills but has very little fruit on it this season. Mr. Bris- tow has over 13,000 prune trees, seven or eight years, old that are unusually large and thrifty but have very little fruit on them this season. ' He is thinking of seeding his or- chard with red rWer instead nf .. i ' '. . ouiuvaung u, next-- season. ; ims treatment is known, to be very sue- cessful .with apple' and pear or- chards after they begin bearing heavilv but I have not seen it tried . , ... tj ' u as tnougn it ougnt-to - be ail right for them. At the last session'of the. legislature a law was passed known as .the "Thistle Law" which for the benefit of farmers and others we summarize as follows : "It shall be the duty of each road sup ervisor of each district: in the slate to as certain from time to time and. know whether or not there is in his district any. weed known as "Russian thistle," the Canada thistle," or: the:r "Chinese thistle," and he' shall as. he ascertains that there is any of such weeds, and before any thereof has shed its bloom or commences to form the seed, notify the I county judge, in writing, of the existence ot sucn weed, ana in a similar manner notify the owner 'or occupant of v the premises npon wnicii said weeds or thistles may be. Mr. Wilson has been in business scarcely over a year, but in that time has so im pressed the community with his straight forward, energetic business methods that his former quarters became too small. He lias accordingly moved into the building recently occupied by the meat market of Smith & Horning, and the . Wilson Commission Co. promises to become one of the .flourishing enter prises of the city, We often hear complaints made by people who do not know, that too much money is spent for our experiment sta tions, and that the money is spent is as good a3 thrown awav : but if these people will give this matter a little con sideration they can easily see their mis take. During the past ten years over $10,000,000 has been spent on the agri cultural ; : experimental stations of the country. During the same period the value of the agricultural products raised has been $30,000,000,000, so that but $1 has been spent lor each $3,000 ot pro duct. As it exists to day the American system of agricultural stations is the most comprehensive that has ever been known, and. its work has been of great benefit to the farming population. At present there i3 a lively demand for beef cattle and all indications point to the fact this demand will continue. The present demand for beef cattle , shonld impress itself upon the stockman or far mers, ; He is an important factor iu the tuture supply ot meat. The big herd is fast becoming an unknown quantity The stock farmer who has a couple of hundred acres or a seption, who raises his own feed and his own cattlle is go ing to do tne business in the future, and his product will always bring the top pri ces conditionally, that he raises good stock.
