Tiie Sunday morning before all .this stir and din and carnage, was as calm and placid as could be along our entire lines, disturbed now and then only by random picket shots. I, myself, being ofF duty that day, visited our brigade picket pits with a brother o!hoer, land ventured upon a transaction which I indulged in but th.at once during tjhreo years of service. Having a late Atlanta paper, I concluded to try and exchange of it with a confronting picket. Our orders were strict that those on picket duty should not communicate with the enemy. But 1 emg olF duty, I did not violate the rule. Just then, all was quiet. So, notifying our men t-f my intention, I m-.unted the earth-work of an advanc ed pit and waved the paper. Instantly a Federal olllccr mounted one of hi pits and did the sam 1 waved to the left to a open depression that extender, be tween our picket lines, which were here about four hundred yards apart. He evidently understood the signal, a id as I advanced from our pits towards the depression, he did the same. In this way wc advanced toward each other, papers in hand, each at a brisk walk. Reader jou ought to have seen how the bJys in blue and the boys in gray crowded out of their long lines of rifk -pits on) both si.les like nuts, on that bright smaiy morning, and anxiously, eagerly watch ing their impromptu representatives ap proaching each other. Not only va. no gun fired, but not a loud word oij shout was uttered. A deep silence prejva.'cd. We soon met about midway. Welsh 00k hands, exchanged names and regiments, and as we exchanged papers men marked that we supposed each ly re would hke a late paper from the opposite s-.'do Then shaking hands again, we cat! w .sh- ed the other a safe issue from the haz ards of war, and returned to our respect ive lines. Soon the hostile pickets were hiddden in their pits again, and as wc walked back io camp, they were popping away at each other occasionally on parts of the line. Capt. J. W. A.
