R. k N. olHcials to the Korthern and Union Pacific companies as soon as the directors of the O. R. & K. Company reach New York. Messrs. fcndicott and JfalloweHu liave already gone East and President Elijah Smith will fcilow in a day or t wo. -Mercury. There is no doubt that the general ef fect of this lease will be in favor of Port land. The only real harm which the Northern Pacific could do this neighbor hood was the building of the Cascade Branch. This difficulty is now removed as, under the circumstances, the enor fnous expenditure for thh work would be unnecessary and unwise. The peo ple of the Yakima Valley, however may thank their stars that this lease and the cessation of construction has not oc curred sooner. The subject has liecn in the balance just long enough to enable the completion of the road into the rich country about Yakima City and Ellens burg, and the stoppage of construction at 'these points makes them supply -depots for interior Washington for an indefiuite time4to come.
