cooks fooJ, diies wet clothes, keeps the
Louse warm and affords light.
Trees re plentiful of certain sorts, and
the soil cf the forest is carpetel bv rein

starch, which is very wholesome and
nourishing. The reindeer will root un

Tlie reindeer when ho casts his cat is
brownish-yellow. In the dog-days lie

ful, but fall toward tho end of Novem

This woaderful creature has been known
to go at the rate of nineteen m'los an

Every pait of this valuable animal ia
converted to sme use or other. The
sinews make bowstrings, springs for
catching birds and -threads for sewing ;
the horns make glue ; the tongue, a
great delicacy, ia tolil, and tho money
comes back iu luxuries. Yoked to a
sledge, the reindeur carries hi master,
who gir'des it easily by means of a cord
fastened around the horns ; and it is en
couraged to proceed by the driver's
Voice". '! The ' sledge is covered with a
Ije&r a ekin, and at the back sre two
leathern girths, into which the traveler
thrusts his arms so as to keep himself
steady. lie has also a pole to bupport

The Laplander hunts tho ermine and
the sqnirrel, th hare, ihe otter, and the
sable. Bv sides, he has fish in abundance
in hia waters salmon, pike, tench,
jerch and smelts. The birds wl i -h
always live with him are heathcocks,
woodcocks and hawks. Other .birds
only stop av,hile, such as swans and
wi!.i geese.
" Nobody dies' of cold in Lapland,"
eays a French writer, "except some
perboa, perhaps, who is bewildered in
the woods, or who, being fatigued with
hunger or long journeys, . 1 ai not
strength enough lelt -to return to his
own home.
The people have some curious cus
toms. When they have eaten a b?ar
and wiped their months and lingers,
tkey solemnly bury all the bones ; f.r
