Yet, combined with the making of needles, there is one town in England of considerable size and importance that depends almost entirely upon needle and fish-hooks for its well doing. And it is not until one has investigated a fish-hook factory that he is made aware how little he previously knew respecting tho barbed instruments in question. Their variety is amazing, as is tho enormous demnnd for them. Tho cod fishery alone draws on the manufact ure for millions of hooks year by year, the price being about 2 shillings tha grois. I was informed by one of the heads of th s Mil ward firm, at Ridditch, that a little while ago, having a comparatively slack tinio, they set some of their hands on this work, and accumulated a couple o! millijus, which, it may be reasona bly suppose d, was regarded as sufficient tta:k ia hanJ, but exactly at thb time r.im from one foreign house an order for 3,000,000 hooks ci tho exact pattern, ar.d in a month or go tho full commis sion wivj executed. I never should have su '-posed there were such curious hooks in cx:!en?3 had I not seen them liny things, a doscn of which can bo taken up on tho finger-tip, and which go to the remoter parts cf India, though for what kind of fishing they are employed the workers have not tho least idea, with j:antio implements, largo and 6trong enough to serve as a meat hook on which to reoit a fat shoep whole. Once s.dn, in answer to my iaquiry for what thoy vvr used, neither tha master ncr employe cculd inform me. I suggested '.sharks, but tha foreman shook hij haad. The woman who docs not require of a man the form of respect, invites liim to discard the substance; and there is one violation of the form which is recent and gross, and might bo well cited as a strik ing illustration of tho decay of manners. It is the practice of smoking in tho so ciety of ladies in public and private places, whether driving, or walking, or sailing, or sitting. Ther i are prcux cJievolicrs who would be honestly amazed if they were told they did not behave like gentlomen, who, sitting with a lady on a hotel piazza, or strolling in a public park, take out a cigar, light it, and. puff as tranquilly as if they were alone in their, rooms. Or a young man comes alone upon the deck cf a steamer, and blows clouds of to bacco smoke in their face?, without even remarking that tobacco ia. disagreeable to some people. This is not, indeed, one of the seven deadly sins, but a man who unconcern edly sings falso betrays that he has no car for music; and the man who smokes in this way shows that lis is not a gentle man.
