Columdiax Dear Sir: After spending several pleasant weeks here 1 again took up ihe line of march east ward, as one of an escort to take a num-V-er o' inmates of the Asylum, to the Na tional Asylum at Washington. It is three hours ride by rail from hero to Chicago, where v.o leiuained tlu liour and 'a, half, but being an innocent abroad nd thinking I might not .have much time to o hunt my train if it got lost I confined my observations mainly to the d''pt We weie too far north to see much of the destruction ocensk n d l-y the great flood?, but we si w a few deieoli-shed bridges. Whil; traveling through the CDal and iron reg'ons of Pennsylvania, we could take a puling view of the '.great irjn manufactories. Our coming m to Pittsburg and seeing the great flumes from the iron founderios I could scarcely beiieve that the entire city wa not on lire. Nothing of sulilcient interest oc turrfd ti be worthy of mention until our arrival at Washington. On our wav from the city to the Asylum we got . glimpse of the Navy Yard, where to mv "surprise we saw only a few " Yankee cheese-boxes"' lying at anchor. After seeing our old soldiers in a home prepared, for the, o who were disabled in defending their country, and who are no'-v menial !y as well as physically disa bled, the two physicians and I staitfii out to "do" the city, but I soon found that it eonhl not be "done" at one sit in. I had hoped to visit Congress while in session, but was disappointed, but NYii had tho pleasure of laterally resting ourselves in, Senatorial chairs. The waiting room is ornamented with line oil paintings about 12 by K fret, representing the importaut events since thu dis-.-ovciy of America. The height of the dome of the Caoital is 200 feet above the tide h-vel. From this we have a view of the whole city, and as tu? Government l uildings were pointed out to me, among them the Smithsonian Institute, Treasury building, Patent Of fice, Soldiers' lloise, ie., ic, I ftlt that every American citizen had good reason Jo be proud of his country. I had th THE KATES. yi co l to j'Iensv;rc of meeting ox Senator Mitchell with who:n I had a very pleasant iiiter-vieff. Having spent forty-eight hours in the Capitol we tool: the train for New York, j a ride of four hours, whore wo were plad ' to take a night's rest I fore continuing our siirht st'i-in' The next mornim; wo visited tin- famous suspension bruise; but as it was foy we could jiot jet a view of the city. Wo walked about half a milt on the r;dye and the Doctor said we wore about one third of the distance across. Wo next tried the elevated rail- ! roail which i;s much pleasanter than trav eling in the horse cars. After about four mile' fide we ca lie tu Central Park. I fere the Dr. and I separated.- he to visit friends and I the Park. Of tlws I will not attempt a minute description. It contains a menagerie, museum, artifi cial pomb, fcc , fcc., When I wishfd to return to the hotel I boarded a er and soon found that it was going the op posite direct ion, but by thr? Yankee method of asking questions I soon re traced my fteps. Next morning I again took thft cars for an eiht hour ride to Salem, Mass. This is a very interesting place for peo ple who are t'o'.A of old relics. lfer still stands t! lirt cliuroli ever erected in America. 1 visited whit is called the witch houJW, wliicli is a frame build ing mostly of oik, ami has stood two hundred an I fifty years. In it several ftippf-sed witches were condemned. Su lem has a line harhor and was once a great shipping point, butno-.v tlu trade is dor.e maiulv bv rai', ... ! After a we spent pleasantly w:ti relatives in Sahvn, I visited the iity of Boston, the place of Pevolutiouarr fame, litre I visited the Muvu'ii of Fine Arts, Dunkerlliil Monument, and t:ie Charles- town Navy Yard (?) Yes, there w;is a jurd, but there was little in that navy to arouse the national pride of an Amer ican. The Mu.-eum contains a tare col lection of ancient sculpture, remains ol Mound builders, Kgypwians, l-ut why attempt a description. Bunker Ilili Monument is built of granite ; i do not reiv-cmber ihe dimension, but I destiuct ly remember i limbing 297 steps to reach the top, but the view wa worth double the work. Although I s-pent but a short time with my relatives in Silem and lloston, yet when I turned my fie. hompward 1 felt that I was not taking leave of stran gcrs. Perhaps thi-; letter ; is quite long enough without mentioning other cities as C::ic3go, Dakimore. and Philadelphia. Youra Truly, Willis Mor.ss. f . - - o Wrr.t.hcr line. Health good.
